@jpm Grab a few Debian-based distro ISOs, burn them to a USB drive and boot em up one by one to see what you like. I recently upgraded my ancient ThinkPad T430s which half its shit was not working / detected by the version of Ubuntu MATE I had installed on it, so over a few nights I picked up some other distros and tried them one by one. Eventually I settled on Linux Mint Debian Edition, am very happy with my choice. Most kids nowadays use GNOME, and it’s nice I guess but some of its paradigms didn’t rub well with me, hence sticking with Cinnamon (what LMDE uses as a DE).

@jpm I hear good things about KDE Plasma, personally I use GNOME because I’m Basic and it’s fine.
Everyone seems to hate Wayland & systemd but good luck going back to the old ways on Desktop unless you’re like a Slackware grognard

@jpm I'd highly recommend Mint as a distro for the It Just Works aspect. You can install a Debian edition and choose from Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce desktops.

I'd second Cinnamon, running on a Debian Mint distro; everyone's different but it's always been my first go-to, sans rolling my own haphazard combination of things. Does what you expect and gets out of your way.
