@ceamba@sfba.social avatar

Ok fam, clue me in. How “dangerous” is it to sign up for TikTok? Am I just overly concerned about my info being used by bad actors?

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@ceamba

I /expect/ (though am not an expert) that it's no more dangerous than any other corporate social media (less danger from hackers than anything Facebook has done in the past decade) which includes, even if it's a fine actor now, that may change once the corporation behind it gets a greater market share and needs to squeeze more revenue out of its users, regardless the way.

All that said,the sheer antagonism of UI/UX design that its website is has kept me away out of spite, regardless.

@matt

Last I've heard, no but, due to financial reasons, they scaled down the team responsible for working on Tumblr down to a skeleton crew to move resources to other Automattic products.

So it's still technically in the plans but unlikely to be anytime soon.

Swanye, (edited ) to random
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

This is a post I probably should have made weeks ago but, well, life has refused to let me remain uninvolved the past few months, sadly.

With the influx of new users to the Fediverse from , I wanted to be a good neighbor and, at least, welcome you. When Tumblr had, first, been bought my and there was a sort of revival going on over there, I was preoccupied with how to get attention for my alternative but, nevertheless, hopeful it might follow WordPress and become open-source.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

It wouldn't benefit /me/ or my project but it would benefit many Tumblr users and, well, that's the important part, in the end; between rising COVID cases (and, now, measles! Thanks; I hate it) and unfettered capitalism and other such phenomenon, we live in times that don't consider or prioritize the health and safety of others and it seemed like Automattic might be the exception to this.

Clearly (unfortunately), no; but I /am/ glad that so many of you wound up here.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

The space is still new and being molded but I think many who've sought out the Fediverse have done so because they were hoping for an improvement on the way corporate social media is conducted. I have high hopes for the type of inclusivity and restoration of autonomy we can create here.

There're a lot more Fediverse Tumblr clones around these days (which is great) & I'm hoping we can create blogging env.s that don't require us to so singularly rely on individuals (who may turn out to be awful).

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

For those who've been following this project to begin with, I'm afraid I'm still stuck in job limbo; as much as I'd like to just ignore that and work on Swanye (a possibility that anxiety, unfortunately, too easily confuses for a valid coping mechanism), I've got a family which relies on me and, therefore, makes getting employed, again, much more pressingly mandatory. I don't have any intent to abandon the project (nor desire to) but I am, sadly, constrained from the choice I'd like to make.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

If you're curious about the project, going through the media tab of this account generally has past development updates and, if you're curious about anything, always feel free to just shoot me said question; I may not always be timely in my response but I'd like to think I'm friendly and I do enjoy interacting with others.

I was drawn to the Fediverse because social media – like all socializing – should be something we can easily engage with/in; it should enrich us, not take something from us.

hey @Swanye you still working on stuff over there? seems like now is a good time with all these people looking at the fediverse today

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@liaizon Heh, it's been the /worst/ watching that and not being able to touch it but, unfortunately, I'm still out of a job so my attention's still preoccupied with remedying that.

Hoping to jump right back into things once I'm employed and financially secure, again.

I kinda want to get back in , but last time I joined they kept having issues with porn bots and didn’t seem willing to do anything about it so I noped out. Do they still have this mentality or did they actually get their shit together?

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@flatchulancelot

Kind of? I've noticed less porn bots than before but still get them from time to time. Since the company decided to fall back into "maintenance mode" re: Tumblr, I wouldn't be surprised for things to make their way through the cracks (though, admittedly, that's just speculation).

expert, to threads
@expert@attractive.space avatar

I decided to remove Threads link from my profile - done.

Replaced it with another verified link.

Now, why did I did this?

Well, because:

  • The only topic on Threads is Elon Musk and Twitter, which makes the feed really boring.

  • I don't trust Meta.

  • I don't want people to block/report my account because of Threads.

@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@expert

It's been a while since I've touched any of it but I know that Tumblr let you edit full HTML for a theme, in the past; having access to full HTML, it'd be pretty trivial just just put the verify part you need directly in your Tumblr theme (that's how I'd expect they're doing it).

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@expert

Hmm; I'm not sure. I added it next to where the description is injected, in my theme (first image). But that seemed to take, just fine; inspecting the page, itself (after changes were saved), didn't seem to clobber the "rel='me'" part, any (second picture).

Just to make sure it all worked together, I've added a link to the Tumblr account to my Masto account and it's marked as verified. Maybe there's a type somewhere that caused Tumblr to not interpret it as valid HTML?

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@expert

Ahh; there's your issue. If I'm not mistaken, the Description section there is the same as under the normal Profile settings: a average-user–friendly textbox so it won't accept any HTML.

What you'll want to do is click the "Edit HTML >" link towards the top-left of your first screenshot.

In there, you should find the raw HTML of your entire theme (similar to my first screenshot in my previous post).

damon, to mastodon

Outside of federation what makes better than ?

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@damon

To me, that's it's copyleft. Its internals will always be available, to anyone, anytime.

None of the alternatives offer that. It's not a feature of the user experience but, because it's copyleft, that user experience can always change, even if the current primary developers want otherwise.

Swanye, to tumblr
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

In lieu of being talked about again, just wanted to let everyone know I'm still around.

Have had to slow my development as the family caught COVID back in August and I was let go from my job shortly after that so I've been focusing on finding new employment.

But I have no expectations of stopping work on Swanye, esp. once I find a job again.

Just wanted an update so it isn't just silence; this account continues to periodically get followers and I'm always glad people are interested!

lazyq2, to webdev

Every time I see <em>, <strong> used instead of <i>, <b> I die a little inside.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@lazyq2 @jkibble

In case you were curious as to why, it's for accessibility; "italic" and "bold" are styles while "strong" and "emphasis" provide a semantic understanding for how something should be understood.

In the cases you're describing, whether it's slanted or given a heavier weight isn't the important part for the visually impaired; as far as their screen reader is concerned, they just need to know that you're providing emphasis, etc. to that part of the sentence.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@lazyq2 @jkibble

But, if you're trying to make clear that you're referencing a book title (for example), you would indicate that by italicizing the title; but that's not for the purpose of emphasizing that part of the sentence (arguably, you're not, semantically, intending to do any emphasis at all, there). That kind of distinction is trivial to demonstrate when you have HTML tags for both purposes.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@lazyq2 @jkibble

(I don't know if it would violate anything, accessibility-wise, for less visually-impaired users but you could change the style of any of these tags and not cause any trouble for screenreaders because their meaning is distinctly tied to the tags used; all tags are provided by HTML for a reason. Deliberately not using <em> and <strong> means deliberately creating inaccessibility for other users)

question for any willing to help:

Attached is the general Swanye page layout; I'd structured tabbing to begin on the right side of the page on the premise that wanting to create a post, etc. would be the first things you might want available to you but, obviously, that then navigates the page right-to-left rather than left-to-right.

For users who'd most use this, is LtR (starting with the posts of the page) preferred? Figured I should probably check before too much is built…

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@pnwflaman

Thank you! This is incredibly helpful. With the lack of feedback, I was just leaning towards doing L-R since that's probably what most users will be expecting (and I also remembered they'll be able to get to the right side quickly by just back-tabbing, first thing).

Heh, you are the third consecutive person who's asked; it should be relatively easy (most of the buttons, textboxes, etc. are all stuff Tumblr has, just in a different layout) so I'll probably put it as a setting users

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@pnwflaman

can just switch. Trying to iron out how things work under the hood first.

So I've known some disabled people (albeit, generally in the minority) who've found the lack of a requirement to be more accessible for them (especially on bad days) but I have been thinking of ways to make it more in-mind, for users.

Embedded images, for example, right now fill in text that say something like, "Don't forget to provide alt-text" (it's formatted markdown so immediately visible and non-hidden)

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@pnwflaman

I was also thinking of providing an admin. option to force alt. text so people could set up instances where it was required.

I know there's also some conversation going around on protocol means to send alt. text suggestions to users who do a post without alt. text that I'm very interesting in reviewing and/or getting involved in.

And Tusky had a feature (don't remember if they still do) that would highlight an image in red if it didn't have alt. text that I might borrow, as well.

MediaActivist, to fediverse

What, in your opinion, is the closest () alternative to ?

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@MediaActivist

If it's helpful – any –, I'd argue Swanye (as it's intended to be a alternative); still in the process of being built but, in case you were looking for anything, just making mention.
