I had a pretty amazing score of tools today.

Last weekend at set build, one of the other volunteers was admiring my homemade tool battery. Today you came up to me and told me that someone had his condos was getting rid of a bunch of tools because they didn't have a battery. He asked if I wanted to have them to see if I could build a battery for them like I did for my drill.

I said yes, not really expecting anything good, but he walked me out to his car and handed me a big bag of tools, all of which use the exact same type of battery used by my drill and my impact driver that I dug out of the trash a few weeks ago.

He gave me a cordless sawzall, a drill, a flashlight / lantern, and another battery charger. A whole suite of these tools now!

First thing I'm going to do is convert the incandescent flashlight/lantern to LED

Rebuilding the flashlight with Cantern™️ LED technology

The buck converter being stuffed in the handle drops the 21 volts from the battery to 5 for the LED driver.

I took the parabolic reflector out because it's not needed with the LED and I put in an aluminum plate to act as a heat sink for the LED

We can rebuild him. we have the technology

I might open it up and crank the LED driver up to 1.25 watts. It's at 1 watt right now and I think it can handle a little more. The difference in brightness between the two is very noticeable

Hey, Emily , I have an old 2 D-cell Maglite flashlight. It had a super bright (krypton?) incandescent bulb, but burned through batteries at an astonishing pace. So I decided to buy an LED bulb for it. I found one on amazon and the result was a great big super heavy flashlight, suitable as a weapon, with less light output than a free penlight sent to me by Doctors Without Borders.

  1. Any ideas?
  2. Do you want it?

@ceartas I can only guess that the LED bulb being sold by amazon just sucks.

I have too many projects already, but thank you for offering!

@MLE_online There are a few really sharp makers on youtube. Have you thought about doing a channel? They are good at finishing their projects.
Xyla Foxlin, Simone Giertz for example..

@twitloyalist I have thought about doing a channel, and in fact I have a channel.

I put out quite a few videos over the course of a year or so, and I think I ended up with about 5,000 followers.

But I stopped doing videos. It's too much work and it takes too much time that I would rather spend on actually doing project.s

@MLE_online Sorry, I did a quick search and didnt find your videos. I will look again.

@MLE_online rad! does you battery pack use the original charger?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@morgan no. The original charger is for nicad and my rebuilt battery is now lithium-ion, so I charge it separately.

acsawdey,
@acsawdey@fosstodon.org avatar

@MLE_online @morgan Could replace the guts of the charger with li-ion chargers, just use the case and battery connectors?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@acsawdey @morgan I probably could. I have an "18-volt" lithium battery charger that might actually be 21 volts. I'm not sure.

@rasterweb Especially with the cordless sawzall. Now I can start stealing catalytic converters
