What is your dream road trip? Where would you start? Where would you end up? What stops would you make along the way? It can be short or long, whatever interests you!

ceartas,
@ceartas@mastodon.world avatar

@RickiTarr

North on CA Highway 1, with stops at Carpinteria, Morro Bay, Cambria, Big Sur, Monterey, Sausalito or Stinson Beach, jump onto 101 and eventually make my way to Ferndale. Stops can be meal breaks or overnight stays, returning stops at all the beautiful places you passed on the way north. This journey must be undertaken in a 2 seat rear wheel drive roadster, preferably a vintage model, with the top down, weather permitting.

Analysis

"Biden’s floating pier off Gaza is... a Potemkin Village"

The US practices theatrics while refugees starve amid rivers of shit

While the pier "isn’t completely useless, it cannot replace overland truck deliveries.

"At most it will supply 150 trucks daily, when 500 are needed.

"It is a PR band-aid on the gaping wound of.. genocidal blockage of aid."

I had a pretty amazing score of tools today.

Last weekend at set build, one of the other volunteers was admiring my homemade tool battery. Today you came up to me and told me that someone had his condos was getting rid of a bunch of tools because they didn't have a battery. He asked if I wanted to have them to see if I could build a battery for them like I did for my drill.

I said yes, not really expecting anything good, but he walked me out to his car and handed me a big bag of tools, all of which use the exact same type of battery used by my drill and my impact driver that I dug out of the trash a few weeks ago.

He gave me a cordless sawzall, a drill, a flashlight / lantern, and another battery charger. A whole suite of these tools now!

First thing I'm going to do is convert the incandescent flashlight/lantern to LED

ceartas,
@ceartas@mastodon.world avatar

@MLE_online

Hey, Emily , I have an old 2 D-cell Maglite flashlight. It had a super bright (krypton?) incandescent bulb, but burned through batteries at an astonishing pace. So I decided to buy an LED bulb for it. I found one on amazon and the result was a great big super heavy flashlight, suitable as a weapon, with less light output than a free penlight sent to me by Doctors Without Borders.

  1. Any ideas?
  2. Do you want it?

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

North LA County.

Pros: It’s a riparian woodland. Trees. Wildlife, especially cool birds, corvids and raptors. My wife lives here, that’s why I moved from the big city. It’s pretty. We can grow things. Close to the desert, 4WD trails. Gateway to the Sierra.

Cons: Drought, and related water woes. Corrupt LA County (5th District) government. Power outages. Gophers, so, not enough snakes. Propane and septic systems. No other queers. The feeling of being surrounded by Trump cultists.

I'm ashamed it's taken until now for me to cancel my NY Times subscription after procrastinating for years. I grew up with it in NYC and subscribed for over 40 years, and they still do great journalism (as long as the subject isn’t controversial). But with their anti-trans campaign, their performative centrism, and their indifference to fascism, they're a net detriment to society. This piece by @e_urq was the last straw of many: https://journa.host/

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers, kowtowing to conservative Catholic groups, mostly from out of state, dropped the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence from their Pride Night festivities. Now they are facing a shitstorm of protest:
