@misc I'm new to mastodon and this form of social media in general. I've followed a few people, but I really want to find people who are posting really engaging content. Also breaking news. If you have a recommendation for an android app, that would be cool, too.
@misc thank you for the help! It all seems like standard social media tactics. In a way twitter seemed like one room of people mumbling to they selves and mastadon seems like a bunch of rooms like that?
@JustinVanderYacht heh it's very subjective - I think I might even describe it as close to the other way around? Just a smaller world here. I think the main difference vis a vis "standard social media tactics" is that there is no recommendation algorithm, so you have to grind a bit harder to find a critical mass of people starting out.

Mammoth, Radiant, and Trunks are all great though. Metatext too, even though it’s no longer actively supported, people are still using it because the dev just did a really good job with the UX.

(Sometimes it gets political, but from mastodon.social where you are now, you should be able to follow and interact with the people on almost any other server/instance.)
@misc@JustinVanderYacht For sure be aggressive with who you decide to not follow. I've already had two accounts try to follow today me that were obviously bots
Regarding the engaging content - follow people who are nice and helpful (Like literally everyone here) and you'll see the stuff they send out and share. Then you can follow those links and slowly grow to find your "people"
Another great way to get a little cultural kickstart is to make an introduction post.
Just kind of like, "Hey - this is me" and then put the hashtag'd subjects you like. For example, if you're into #writing (I am) you would include that hashtag.

I'm planning to move to a new instance (which seems to be a feat in and of itself but there appear to be step by step guides online)- what I don't understand is if I need to refollow all the people I'm currently following on my old account or if that will automatically happen when I transfer my account?
Hey I highly encourage other people to do this. I got a little nervous when it got a lot of boosts, but so far the uptake has been extremely manageable, with just a few really nice new users I've been able to help. And other people have jumped in to help top! And I can always delete/edit if that changes. Give it a try!
@JustinVanderYacht Follow tons of people! See who they boost and follow those people. Don’t stop following until you hit at least 200 or something. Be just as ruthless with unfollowing, muting, and blocking. Basically: mildly interesting or better: follow. Mildly annoying or worse: unfollow/mute/block (depending on how bad it is).
