To Every Instance Admin
Please Block “Project92” / “Barcelona” / “Threads” in accordance to the FediPact

Facebook is going to data harvest your instance’s userdata, in order to protect them you need to defederate the “threads.net” domain!

250+ Instances have already done so, and thousands more have pledged to do so!

Erik,
@Erik@social.uden.ai avatar

You as a user can also individually domain block *.threads.net in advance if your admin doesn’t do so!

@Erik I don't quite get where I can do that in the web interface. Do you have slightly more detailed instructions?

Erik,
@Erik@social.uden.ai avatar

Someone explained it here: https://mastodon.moule.world/users/MOULE/statuses/110586343942660169
Hope this helps!

There were rumors recently that Facebook reached out to many admins of the largest Fediverse Instances, including Gargron. It was said that there was an NDA and many other things. I believe Gargron made a deal not to defederate it, but that is entirely speculation and most likely not true.

Some day when this rumored about NDA no longer matters, I hope we will hear about all the events that went down. For now I am against the commercialization of the Fediverse and stand strictly against corporations with such a bad track record when it comes to keeping user’s info safe to have anything to do with the Fedi. Facebook will most likely use Threads to data harvest and use that data to make “shadow profiles” (a practice they are known for) of users that fleed to the Fedi specifically to not be targeted by big tech.

Suddenly your posts will be sold to advertisers simply because your platform federates with Facebook’s Threads.

killswitch,

@Erik @Gargron @iamhabenula

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it ...

Gab: DEFEDERATE! RALLY THE TROOPS!

Threads (Gab for Dummies): Yeeeaahhh, that's why we have moderation tools,we don't care about all the individual fascist accounts there you see, reasons being <cue corporate drone speech>...

Meanwhile these admins who are going to "poach userbase" from , from Zuck's POV:

@nicdex@techhub.social avatar

@mokazemi @Erik Respectfully, no.
Please see these post/blog by other Mastodon dev and admin that explain perfectly my POV on the subject.
https://www.timothychambers.net/2023/07/03/instagram-threads-and.html
https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/07/what-to-know-about-threads/
There is a huge drift between those who wants to pre-block and those who will federate cautiously. Do not try to convince me, I have read all of the opinions on the subject and my mind is set.
If you do not want to be here when Threads federate (they haven't yet) then you can switch instance.
Thank you,

nicdex,
@nicdex@techhub.social avatar

@mokazemi @Erik Also ActivityPub does not publish user's data (where private information like email, IPs and etc live).
It only publish the already public profile available at https://techhub.social/@mokazemi

mokazemi,
@mokazemi@techhub.social avatar

@nicdex @Erik
Thank you so much for explanation. Don't get me wrong. I just wanted to know you opinion and also I don't currently nave any strict mindset on it :)
BTW, I'm happy that Fediverse is become much important and works that big companies want to invest on it.
I don't leave the scene! :))

This is precisely what happened with Web 2.0 and see where that lead.

To say that corporations have your interest in mind when it comes to your data and won’t utilize this new way of collecting data to their advantage somehow is ignorant of recent history.

This is besides the point that we already have information that LibsofTikTok, Moms4Liberty, GaysAgainstGroomers, and many more far right/alt-right/fascist accounts are perfectly allowed on the platform and are not moderated in any way

If a Fediverse instance would host known fascists and the moderators would do nothing against it, would you still federate with them? No. So why make that exception for Facebook?

It’s not about “being too cautious” it’s about stopping the commercialization of the Fediverse. Yes, it’s good that more people are interested in the Fediverse, but it is not good if corporations show bigger interests, as it shouldn’t be capitalized on as the rest of the web was.

Amazon Web Services is now what, like 50% of the Web? Even Netflix runs through Amazon! So, when our great platforms do end up getting ads, being centralized and dependent on one point of failure, do end up getting algorithms and manipulation of information, what do you do then, when you have no power to stop it?
Stop it at its inception, at the root, not when it’s too late.

nicdex,
@nicdex@techhub.social avatar

@Erik @mokazemi See, no one said corporations have our interest in mind.
Fuck Meta, I don't care about them, I don't care about these fascists accounts, that's why we have moderation tools.
What I care about is reaching all of the other people stuck on Meta and Twitter. So we can bring them here.

but like I said, nothing I say will convince you and vice-versa. So stop trying, so will I. Respect my choice, I respect yours.

Erik,
@Erik@social.uden.ai avatar

We can have instances for the specific purpose of migrating accounts to the rest of the fedi, yes. That is the only valid reason - however these servers don’t need to be servers that have any content on them or any users vulnerable to Facebook’s very likely data collection.

You do you and I’ll respect your decision, but once Facebook shadowprofiles every singular one of your users, sends them targeted ads for posts they made on the Fedi, and commercializes the Fediverse in ways we can’t even think of yet, you shouldn’t act surprised.
