Have any of you bought a dot-matrix printer recently? (I guess in this context “recently” means “in the last decade”.) I’m curious the state of the art.

@anildash I forget where it was recently that I saw them mentioned. I've been researching a lot of scanners & printers and someplace listed "dot matrix printers" as a thing they carried I think. (Sure surprised me, but I guess they still are around.)

billstclair,

@anildash Two years ago. Use it once a month or less. Works as I wanted it to.

@anildash surprised to discover that they are still readily available: https://www.123inkt.be/Printers/Matrix-printers/24-pins-matrix-printers-p742068.html

@toon @anildash I wish I hadn’t known this. Might have to buy one for retro-nostalgic tech-optimistic letter writing.

@verbeeld @anildash i run the infodesk with a friend, and now I think we need one of these for our printing needs. We are very official.

verbeeld,
@verbeeld@mastodon.social avatar

@toon @anildash This is the way.

@verbeeld @anildash when people question our authority I can just point to the matrix printer.

haploc,
@haploc@fedi.cr-net.be avatar

@toon @verbeeld @anildash make sure it acknowledges that pointing

@haploc @verbeeld @anildash it will be glorious and beige. And it will be loud.

@anildash I haven't, but when my daughter was in preschool a few years ago she'd occasionally come home with a drawing on fanfold paper, complete with sprocket holes, and I was genuinely baffled as to where they'd got it from. Looking at this thread, it seems like dot matrix isn't as gone as I thought.

rickwallace,

@anildash seems like as good a place as any to offer my billion dollar idea for free: do a printer that just works

@anildash @rickwallace "Prints and the Revolution"?

Anil, please admit you wrote that whole post just to use that pun.

(And that would be just fine because it's fantastic.)

@anildash @rickwallace I feel like the $99 Brother laser printer is basically there. Had mine for two years, sits on the network, never had issues with network printing, just works. First printer I don’t actively despise.

@anildash @rickwallace I got you: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/brother-hl-l2320d-black-and-white-laser-printer-gray/4499400.p?skuId=4499400

I had one of these for years, never an issue. These days I have a 90lb HP because reasons, but the Brother one never broke.

rickwallace,

@anildash oh man! Yes, thank you!

aeberbach,
@aeberbach@mastodon.online avatar

@anildash Epson still make nice ones, they are still used in industrial settings. Pretty sure my local mechanic is still using one from the 90s for invoices. No other printer will last as long.

InsertUser,

@anildash I think the most recent time I've heard any discussion of getting these to work was when @mattgrayyes and Tom Scott talked about how they shredded YouTube comments about 5 years ago:

The shredding itself:

bradbarrish,
@bradbarrish@mastodon.social avatar

@anildash they do, in fact, still make them. From what I understand the tech has largely remained the same.

thevowel,

@anildash so 40-year-old ones don’t count?

letsgoat,
@letsgoat@mas.to avatar

@anildash my work has! They were purchased before I started, but still recently.

There is exactly 1 in use, for shipping paperwork, despite most of it also being able to be printed via normal laserjet. I believe the reasoning is "still works + they like using it". There are more brand new in box lol

@anildash Okidata makes some decent models. They have USB and Ethernet models. You can use tractor paper or sheets. There are models that have 9 or 24 pins, depending on your needs, budget, and compatibility needs.

    @anildash The last I ever took a printout from a dot-matrix printer was in 1996. The closest I was to buying one was in 1994, but even then, dad and I went with the new fangled inkjet technology.

    TinCanWin,

    @anildash they still make those?

    @TinCanWin @anildash they last forever, cost nothing to print and make carbon copies
