Do you have any real sense of how recently chattel slavery was (formally) outlawed in the United States? Two not-overlong human lives ago, stacked end to end. That’s it. It’s not at all inconceivable that someone now in their eighties knew, in their childhood, someone that had been born into slavery. I often sit with this fact. I recommend the practice – it’s sobering.
@adamgreenfield we might think about it the other way around too--that there is some ancient white senior citizen somewhere (probably florida) who in their childhood knew an old kinsman (klansman?) who had at one time owned or stood to inherit chattel slaves
@adamgreenfield Some things seem a lot longer ago now than they did when I was a kid. The reason is simple: they are a lot longer ago now than they were when I was a kid. :)
