”There are no guarantees in war,” green said.
”Oh, there are,” blue said quietly, looking away into the darkness. ”It’s just that they guarantee death, destruction, suffering, heartache and remorse.”

@synlogic Player of Games is a great book! But have to admit Surface Detail is my favourite of the whole series, followed closely by Use of Weapons, Player of Games and Excession.

What makes Surface Detail my favourite, is the way it shoots an arrow right at the heart of . Because let’s face it, people don’t vote for policies, they vote for what vibes with them and proclaims its love for them and their way of life, protecting you from ”falling”.

@gimulnautti @synlogic Consider Phlebas just blew my mind with scope of the universe it described. Use of Weapons and Player of Games were great too. Banks universe build was one of the best ever done.

@Runyan50 @synlogic I have started to recommend Consider Phlebas as a prequel for that very reason 😜

@khleedril @synlogic Oh I can’t even dream of reading Feersum Endjinn, non-native english language barrier! 😄

@gimulnautti @synlogic that's the one I said I'd never read again, the horrific violence stayed with me more than the story.
I love Games, Look to Windward, Feersum Enjinn and State of the Art. Most of them.

@noodlemaz @synlogic Well pointed out, a content warning is indeed applicable for Surface Detail!

Even if it is the one for the horror fans in the series, I still find the book manages to strike a balance between depicting suffering and pointing out causes & remedies for it quite well.

Conservatism tends to be fascinated with violence & suffering. And this particular story I don’t think could have easily been told with less of it.

Thanks!

@noodlemaz @synlogic ”You should have had religion child, that in it you might have found the hope that could then be crushed.”

-The master demon of a digital hell

Isn’t that most beautiful in maliciousness though? The way it paints a picture of the dark side of religious saviourness?

Ok, that’s it, I’m done being a demon myself. 😄
