There’s already backlash against on .

They’re not happy about it. The oxygen has just been sucked out of the room.

I understand where they’re coming from. They thought AT protocol was going to catapult over . And now Threads has chosen ActivityPub.

How things change in the space of three months.

@fediversenews

gin,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I feel like Bluesky waited for too long, and now they're going to be overshadowed. As much as I hate Meta, I think it's better to have an ActivityPub-compatible platform from them, than a platform endorsed by Dorsey and full with crypto-bros.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews
There are hundreds of Tweets today from users (bots) with 0 followers saying they tried Threads, hated it, and have come back.🤔

ekana,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews could it also just be that Threads is an awful app (it is). Also, most Bluesky people don't even care about the protocol lol.

ekana,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews what they do care about tho is algorithmic choice. It's hard to go back to a feed like Threads when you can have the highly custom feeds on Bluesky.

atomicpoet,

@ekana I've legitimately tried to use Bluesky more often, but I just can't find anything worth reading and the algorithms aren't helping me. Mind you, I prefer reverse chron over everything else.

ekana,

@atomicpoet that's fair the culture is different although plenty of intellectual people post often over there but the vibe is definitely more casual.

I for one can say that the custom feeds have been incredibly helpful in chatting with other black users. Someone set up a feed called Blacksky and I've made some very nice connections there, a real community. And some people have made some very funny hyper specific feeds as well. Overall it's just nice having more flexibility.

goatsarah,

@atomicpoet @ekana it certainly seems to lack the depth that exists here.

openwebfriend,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews The admin for universeodon.com, after meeting with Meta, suggested in a reply that InstagramThreads was also looking to connect with AT protocol too. This would be very smart in my opinion, but after seeing all the algorithm nonsense in their app, I wonder if they will get in their own way leaving the spaces to be bridged by the small/indie web here still.

@atomicpoet Don't you mean "AT protocol"? What you wrote there was "AP protocol".

EDIT: You’ve fixed it. That was quick!

atomicpoet,

@AltCode Yes.

I've got a funny little story for you. So, a while back, someone was all like, "Hey, and are totally done for because Bluesky is this massive gorilla with loads of cash!" And you know what? I've been saying for ages that if Bluesky is a gorilla, then (or , as the kids now call it) is a ginormous whale! And guess what? Tonight, my friend, I've been proven right!

Hold on to your hats because Threads has gone from zero to millions of users in less than a day!

pre,

@atomicpoet Their user-retention will be worse than Mastodon I suspect.

But can't deny that's a flying start for 'em.

@pre @atomicpoet

About the quick numbers from 0 to 2 million, a "flying start" I read that many services in the first months inflate their numbers. Just a normal thing. But now days, it's unnecessary.

Im assuming many Instagram users who join dont care about being scraped. Sorry if my terminology is not correct, im referring to the permissions, see images

  • atomicpoet,

    @harriettmb Based on conversations with admins from bigger instances, federation with are a near certainty.

    I suspect EU will eventually get access but to but they’ll need to abide by their GDPR obligations.

    davey_cakes,

    @atomicpoet @harriettmb at the minute you can't delete your Threads account without also nuking your Instagram account.
    It sounds like something that wouldn't meet GDPR policy on honoring delete requests.

    I have to say I'm a bit surprised at reports that dogpiling of minorities seems to have already started happening on Threads, with known harassment groups making their presence felt.

    atomicpoet,

    @davey_cakes @harriettmb Yeah, I imagine quite a few servers may defederate from it.

    harriettmb,

    @davey_cakes @atomicpoet I have an instagram that I haven’t used in years. The reason it’s still there is it’s a bitch to delete. Irritating that it’s so easy to set up SM but really difficult to get rid of them. Thank you Davey that are not coming to this instance.

    Yep is the big loser here amongst the would-be sharks circling . But nothing to do with protocols @atomicpoet. Simply for those that want a Twitter replacement has got what no other has - millions of real users hence more content. That's what holds everybody else back.

    has no USP now. Weirdly USP is doing microblogging/discussion DIFFERENTLY from the Twitter model.

    SiegePerilous,

    Yes I read that too Harriet. As you say, not yet available in the EU as it doesn’t comply with legislation there.

    But I had read that the plan is for users of Threads and Mastodon to be able to communicate directly… that concerns me… Greatly!@harriettmb @atomicpoet

    @luca@sironi.tk avatar

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews how many users/active users got blue sky now ?

    atomicpoet,

    @luca @fediversenews Maybe a few hundred thousand. The waiting list has about 2 million. But Threads has now blown past that by orders of magnitude.

    luca,
    @luca@sironi.tk avatar

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews yeah, i saw that. Still, those 5 millions on meta are users, time will tell if all those stories maker also share written content.

    To me, if they were interested into that, they would have open a twitter or fb account, not an ig one
