An author wondering how obscure I am being. Victor Lazlo do you recognize him?

benetnasch,
@benetnasch@writing.exchange avatar

@NaraMoore Nope, and I haven't seen the movie, so the reference is completely lost on me.

@benetnasch

If you like classic movies you should. The movie is Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains. It is one of the true greats.

michellelaverickmusic,

@NaraMoore well Im thinking of Casablanca…

NaraMoore,

@michellelaverickmusic

Indeed. Casablanca the resistance leader who loves the Ingrid Bergman character.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@NaraMoore That just makes me think of GTA:)

@NaraMoore

A girl I dated in high school had an album called Viktor Lazlo. Wasn't sure if that was the singer, or a song.

@writerobscura

New to me:

GPT says (so check your facts if you ever quote any of this)

"There is a singer named Viktor Lazlo. Viktor Lazlo is the stage name of Belgian singer Sonia Dronier. She adopted the name Viktor Lazlo from the character Victor Laszlo in the film "Casablanca" (1942). Viktor Lazlo is known for her smooth jazz and pop music style.

One of her notable songs is "Breathless," released in 1987, which became an international hit and helped establish her career as a singer. She has released several albums throughout her career and continues to be active in the music industry.

@writerobscura

Needless to say, this is not the Victor Lazlo I was thinking of.

@NaraMoore
A concentration camp escapee and underground leader let to wander freely.

@quoidian

A putz who goes off with a woman who doesn't love him.

@NaraMoore
She was sent away by the man who she does love.

POV

I can't argue the point.`

NaraMoore,
@NaraMoore@sakurajima.moe avatar

@quoidian

Either way, Ingrid Bergman is compelling in that scene.

quoidian,
@quoidian@mastodon.online avatar

@NaraMoore
I just scanned the list of her movies. Of the half of them that I've seen, everyone is on my 'must see again'- list.

I can't imagine any other casting for Lazlo, Rick, and Ilsa.

NaraMoore,
@NaraMoore@sakurajima.moe avatar

@quoidian

Marvelous casting.

I find the Paris portion drags after having seen it several times, but the ending (which was written at the last moment) carries the film.

And Claude Rains, "I'm afraid Major Strasser would insist." Such a lovely humors counter point to the seriousness of the scene.

@NaraMoore
And the <I am Shocked. Shocked that you allow gambling> is still a meme.

NaraMoore,
@NaraMoore@sakurajima.moe avatar

@quoidian

Classic. I thought of mentioning it, but just stuck with other line.

I think I have used the shocked line myself a few times.

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@NaraMoore Recognised the name, but had to Google to remember why. Feel like on a better brain day I would have known.

NaraMoore,
@NaraMoore@sakurajima.moe avatar

@Rhube

Then you probably would have recognized it. The movie was referenced in the prior chapter.
