She's just this guy, you know?

I'm a science fiction and fantasy writer. I like robots and dragons, silliness and literature.

Used to be an academic; may get too deep into analytic philosophy unexpectedly.

I would love to get your thoughts and feedback on my from my latest book, The Challenges of Being Me. Do you like it? Does it capture your attention? Without knowing anything about the book, what genre would you say this cover best fits? @bookstodon

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@dickrubin716 @noodlemaz @willaful @benetnasch @bookstodon I wouldn't go with a hand-writing font as they can be difficult to read. The font is a little plain, but not bad. It does come too close to the edges of cover, though - try to give it more space.

You could also use some blending options on the text layer to give it a little distance from the image, such as an outer glow or a drop shadow.

The image could also use a little more contrast to reduce the washed-out effect.

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@dickrubin716 @noodlemaz @willaful @benetnasch @bookstodon I think people are getting memoir because of the naturalistic photo and the person standing alone. This says that it's very much about one person's journey, rather than a YA romance. If you want to suggest romance, having more than one person on the cover would help. I can see coming of age, but the person looks a little old for that (hard to tell from the back of course, but the B&W also gives this a more mature feel).

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@dickrubin716 @noodlemaz @willaful @benetnasch @bookstodon your name also looks a little squashed over to the side. I get that you don't want it to interfere with the image, but there's just not enough space for it to sit comfortably beside the figure. I would have it on one line centred (with an outer glow or stroke effect to make it legible).

Struggling to find an answer to this question on search:

My bicycle's back wheel won't roll backwards.

It isn't that it won't spin freely exactly - it spins fine forwards. It's just that when I try to roll the bike backwards it will not turn.

It's not to do with the pedals. I am talking about just rolling it along the ground. It used to work fine.

It's not an electric bike.

What can cause this??

Can you name a film that was adapted not from a novel, but from a short story?
Here's one:

The Illusionist (2006)

@bookstodon

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@franciscawrites @bookstodon The Shawshank Redemption, and I think it benefits from it. King's longer works rarely adapt in a faithful way that's also good, but being shorter enables the story to be told in full, at a good pace, with all the detail.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

@Sablebadger @RHW @Jennifer @bookstodon yesssss, very recommended for this.

Is it just me, or is self/indie publishing having it's midlife crisis tech bro moment? https://robertkingett.com/posts/6564/ @bookstodon

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@weirdwriter @bookstodon that's not how I would put it. I would say that indie publishing is being buried by grifters churning out millions of stolen words, so that it's harder to find genuine indie books.

So-called 'generative-AI' isn't indie publishing - it's scam artists stealing from indie publishers, writers, and artists.

Amazing news! They found a scroll describing Plato's last moment and his burial place: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/apr/29/herculaneum-scroll-plato-final-hours-burial-site

The most on-bran thing ever is that he spent his last moments critiquing a musician.

Is there a exchange community or group on Mastodon?

I have some chives and green onions that are going to seeds and I will have more seeds than I need.

Of course, there is our local free seeds and plants library but I would prefer to use mastodon as my main seeds resource.

Rhube,

@Laplantgenetics @melanie @compost while they can last that long, they usually don't. The seed packets aren't lying. I know because I have tried to use out of date seeds I stored well.

Lefty SC justice: What about the Finding Out step that always follows?

Lawyer: We eliminate it. It never happens ever again, but just for the office of President. Everyone else continues to Find Out.

Can anyone recommend a good therapist for online treatment? I'm trying to research it on my own and it's exhausting. A testimonial from someone saying 'this one knows their stuff and isn't a dick/is easy to talk to' would really help. The ones I've found don't seem to offer sample sessions like other therapists. The last therapist i approached did have a sample session and was awful, so I'm wary.

Woman or non-binary person preferred. Experience with preferred if you know.

So, the admin people at my doctors are high on power and utterly clueless.

In response to my email asking them to provide a medical certificate for my ESA application they pissed about for a few days and then sent an email that just says: 'Usually for this sort of thing, we get sent a form for completion by the patient. What sort of certificate have you had in the past?' instead of forwarding it to my doctor.

I know this is COMPLETE BOLLOCKS. I know because the job centre told me>

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

>their receptionist told me, and my friend, who has gone through the exact same process for the same fucking thing (and got a reply the same day) told me.

This is why I hate checking my email - because people reply to me with bullshit like this.

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

So I have responded with scanned copies of the letters.

The doctors always say 'Just label it FAO me and the admin staff will forward it on.' They DON'T, they just reply with ABSOLUTE, STRESSFUL, BULLSHIT.

Regarding some fishing by the UK media for people to share experiences about (DIY) HRT that has been making the rounds, I'm repeating something I posted on Bluesky.

Do not engage with Susanna Rustin on any topic, especially those related to being trans or trans healthcare.

The material she's written in The Guardian, the paper most at the vanguard of stirring anti-trans sentiment in the centre left, is not friendly, fair or objective regarding us.

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@danmcd @EllisCrawford It is a deliberate infiltration of the centre left by the far right. For about a decade they have been using calculated language, co-opted from the left, to make it seem like they are speaking to leftist - especially feminist - voices. For example, they will lipsink to the sex gender distinction to win over feminists, and then collapse gender into sex, performing a bait-and-switch for biological essentialism and traditional gender roles.

In the past five years the mask>

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@danmcd @EllisCrawford >has slipped a lot, with many no longer disguising what they are saying and advocating for. But those voices are now established in traditionally centre-left circles (like The Guardian) in a way where they have become the dominant voices.

And yes, the anti-lgbtq+ groups organising in this country are being bank-rolled in large part by Russia and the American far right. The connections are strong.>

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@danmcd @EllisCrawford >This video centres around JRK, but illustrates the general situation well: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou_xvXJJk7k

Rhube,
@Rhube@wandering.shop avatar

@danmcd @EllisCrawford there are reporters who are published by the Guardian who still do good, left-wing work - I'm thinking specifically about Carole Cadwalladr (who exposed Cambridge Analytica) and Danielle Lavelle (who has written extensively on homelessness from an own voice perspective) but I have given up following specific newspapers to present a coherent view. I follow reporters, and I do not give money to The Guardian.

Absolutely horrified to learn that Angry Robot were going to feed stories from open submissions into Storywise for 'sorting'.

The AR I used to have close ties to no longer exists. The people I knew have moved on&I haven't edited for them for years, but, for a while, they gave me a connection to the publishing community that was incredibly valuable. That AR would do something so tasteless and immoral puts a terrible taste in my mouth.

They have now backed down, but fuck: https://astrolabe.aidanmoher.com/angry-robot-ai-publishing-storywise/
