I'm here and planning to stick with it even though there's room for improvement. Neither lemmy nor kbin were really ready for this much attention, but that's not their fault. And they are a lot better than nothing. I think fediverse principles and flexibility seem like a better fit for the core values of S76 as a company and Pop OS as a project.
Most people access the Fediverse through one of the large instances: lemmy.world, kbin, or beehaw. New or small instances of Lemmy have no content by default, and can most easily get content by linking to larger Lemmy instances. This is done manually one "Community" at a time (I spent 15 minutes doing this yesterday). Meanwhile,...
Very weird, there appears to be a bug in kbin. I'm seeing your "We have talked with them..." comment as a response to dozens of different comments here, including one that I made, and now when I look through the thread my response to your comment is replicated in all those dozens of places as well. My apologies, that would explain why your response seemed like such a non-sequitur to me. I'll see if I can file a bug report about this.
I agree, right after getting used to swapping from reddit to kbin, it felt more like I was part of a community! I like to think reddit was a large city and kbin is a small village that is gradually growing.
I'm really glad I took the opportunity to swap from reddit to kbin, I already feel happier on the site and I haven't even been here for a week. I definitely feel like more people should swap which thankfully most likely will happen as reddit dies down.
Self-hosting your own instance might be the best way for you. You can surely use kbin for this. But I would recommend you to check out Pixelfed, which is focused on image sharing and is a part of the fediverse. A dedicated pixelfed would meet your needs really well.
When I visit kbin.social, I see new posts regularly. On other servers posts stay on the frontpage for multiple days. This is also true if I switch their sorting to "hot". So that is probably not the difference....
It’s part of the fediverse, things like mastodon, pixelfed, lemmy, and kbin can communicate with each other because they all use activitypub. It’s a fun rabbit hole to explore if you have time
Kbin uses a completely different backend and is nicely optimised. The owner (Ernest) is also investing in server space to accommodate the higher user activity.
They might answer you themselves, I'm sure they're lurking here somewhere. 🙃
Via the ActivityPub protocol that fediverse software uses :)
Pretty cool stuff!
Kbin can also directly interact with Mastodon users and toots because of this. Kbin magazines can natively contain both “threads” from Kbin and Lemmy, and microblog “posts” from Kbin and Mastodon. (And other software depending how they map these features.)
You shouldn’t need an extra account for Lemmy because kbin and lemmy are federating now, as does Mastodon, so they should all play together. Hopefully someone who knows a little bit more about how to call up a Lemmy community in kbin can help — I know in Lemmy, if the community isn’t already known by the instance, you can make it show up by putting the full URL in the search box within your instance (so like if I, through my lemmy.world account, wanted to join a kbin magazine that no one else has joined on my instance, in the search box I can make the instance find it by putting in https://kbin.social/m/((magazine name)) in the search and it’ll come up).
Hopefully someone at kbin can verify the best way to discover Lemmy communities over there so everyone can keep playing together.
Exactly... occasionally when I'm trying to research something and I've exhausted the information available on google / reddit I'll go to twitter to try to search for something... and 90% of what you can find there is just spam. I used to subscribe to a bunch of comedians and journalists and it served as a nice news / joke feed but things really took a dive after 2016 and made the whole platform horrible to use.
I feel like Kbin's combination of mastodon and a reddit-like community system could solve a lot of problems with both reddit and twitter.
I really want Lemmy to work but I'm having a difficult time tracking different communities across different instances. It feels like I'm doing something wrong. I typically just land on the lemmy.world front page and scroll through there, and I see some interesting stuff, but I'd like to learn how to curate it a bit more
On that bar, on KBIN, is Threads, Microblog, and People. I hear that KBin is still in early stages of development, so hopefully it will get more filtering and federation options in the future
I think kbin and lemmy are meant to be federated with each other, tho federation was temporarily disabled on kbin because the servers couldn't hold under the immense pressure of reddit refugees.
There's also a noticeable delay. So far I don't know if it happens because I used Kbin to post on lemmy.ml or whether it's something else, but it took about 10-15 minutes for a post to show up on other Lemmy instances, including lemmy.ml even though I posted in hardware@lemmy.ml.
It annoyed me such much that I checked out and moved to Kbin. No matter what instance of Lemmy I was using I had the same issue you are experiencing. Everything has been working great over here so far!

Is there a way to see what magazines/communities we're subscribed to? I know there's /sub, but that just shows the posts, rather than the communities themselves.
Lemmy at least has a filter for both posts and communities, which makes it easier. Kbin doesn't have that for magazines, although it has something similar for posts in the /subs page.

Hi, I'm Mercedes, a social scientist, science geek, and scifi fan. Star Trek is my favorite world, but also love Stargate, Fringe, The Expanse, and others. Still learning my way around Kbin (I suppose many of us are), so I hope I posted this intro in the right spot.
In solidarity with the developers and small companies that have come to expect and rely on access to Reddit’s API, /system76 and /pop-os subreddits have been taken private for the June 12th protest. #RedditBlackout
Trying to give #kbin a try - #Reddit is one of those sites that I found useful but never really loved the culture of, so a #fediverse alternative seems like something I'd enjoy. Anyone experienced with it have any tips for getting started?
@Dunstable You can create an account on a Kbin server and see what Magazines (subreddits) exist locally on that server or on the largest instance, kbin.social. There are also a lot of Lemmy communities (subreddits) out there as well. You can find Lemmy communities here: https://lemmyverse.net/communities
Do you know about any Custom ROM communities here apart from LineageOS? I do really miss iodé OS for example. Would you like to have a general Custom ROM community or special custom ROM communities?
Reddit refugees assemble!!!
Nothing important here. I just want to see how many people are moving away from Reddit.
Does lemmy.world really have 26000 users already? (lemmy.world)
Almost! At the time of this post, lemmy.world has a whopping 25733 users and is growing fast....
The Lemmy User Experience is Better When Centralized into Fewer Instances

Kbin.social passes 30k Monthly Active Users
It's still tiny numbers in the scheme of things, but also quite a big number for a site that had ~30 users this time last month....
We want to move away from Reddit, is kbin suitable?

Why does the frontpage of kbin.social work so much better than any other server?
When I visit kbin.social, I see new posts regularly. On other servers posts stay on the frontpage for multiple days. This is also true if I switch their sorting to "hot". So that is probably not the difference....

What is your guys' experience with Lemmy and Kbin interaction
This post comes from Lemmy, so at least we know that part works lmao....

Seeing Subscribed Magazines
Is there a way to see what magazines/communities we're subscribed to? I know there's /sub, but that just shows the posts, rather than the communities themselves.
