I think it is important to remember this, too, and how optimistic the world felt at that moment. This happened on the eve of my 31st birthday. All my life I had assumed the world was going to be divided like it was, both in the horrible aftermath of Kristallnacht and what followed, and the Cold War, but in that year so much happened.
We know now it was incomplete and problematic but there was hope. We need to remember the hope and embrace that.
