Good time for a reminder that 988 in the United States is not safe for everyone. They engage in nonconsensual rescue, aka they will notify the police without permission and without notifying the caller.
It took more than three years, but Canada's #988 hotline for suicide prevention launched this morning. With a convenient short code and increased resources for the hotline, callers can speak with a trained responder for support and help.
The number works on all Canadian phone companies, including by text message.
If you're thinking about suicide or you are worried about somebody you know, 9-8-8 is there to help, anytime.
@mekkaokereke My cousin called the cops as she was experiencing a mental health crisis. She is the whitest person I know.
Cops show up, arrest her, leave her in the freezing rain for 45 minutes while she is handcuffed. Take her to jail. Stick her in a holding cell. No where to sleep or lie down for 48 hours.
Never ever call the cops, lean on #Community instead.
Also, don't call #988 in the US as they definitely will not help you and #definitely call the cops on you. #ACAB
