@boris So, I think @thisismissem is looking more for a group of otherwise independent decision-making entities. On the fediverse, the typical mapping is 1 server = 1 locus of control; #CoSocial and a few others are exceptions there, although that will probably change. That said, I know that the cooperative model is used in other ways than how we do it; like for independent farms that collaborate to sell milk, for example.
Hi fedi! @darius and I are digging into our governance research, and we have a great starter list of server admins to potentially talk to about governance and administration models and challenges, but very unofficially, I’d love to hear suggestions, too.
We’re looking at active servers ranging from ~100-2,500 users with some flex on either end of the range, and we’re building our list with an eye on structural, geographic, demographic (along multiple axes), and linguistic diversity.
Are you a #CoSocial member in #Montreal? Join us for a members meetup on January 9 2024 at 7PM at La Chope Angus, a coop brew pub, https://www.lachopeangus.com/ . Please RSVP with @evan to let us know you're coming.
#CoSocial members in #Montreal: @alkatandan will be in our city next week, and we thought it would be cool to have an in-person members meeting. This would be next Tuesday at 7PM. I'm trying to find a coop-friendly venue to go to (suggestions welcome). It'd be good to see everyone! /cc @sylvain@Sebprovencher@jszym
Hello 2024! New year, new account,
so a re- #introduction is in order.
I’ve been floating around the web for a long time. I dabble, experiment, geek, create and roam with my #ADHD wherever it leads which has mostly been around media and the internet.
I have a question about how #mastodon works. If an image takes forever to load, does the blame lie with my instance’s server or the server of the person who published the post?
With ActivityPub, it's usually going to be a shared responsibility between your server and the origin server to get the files to you. If one or the other is slow, it's going to make the whole thing slow.
We have pretty good infrastructure at #CoSocial but I wouldn't want to make any promises on specific performance issues.
I can try some browser tests, though? It's an interesting selling point!
We need a new logo for #CoSocial. If you have experience designing identity, and you'd like to be paid for making one for us, check out our design brief:
We’re in the middle of writing up the Code of Conduct for the #cosocial coop. We all want a safe and inclusive space. DM me if you’re interested in contributing.
We had about 1/3 of the full CoSocial membership on the call. We managed to get through reports from working groups, elections of board members, and resolutions on strategic direction.
Thanks to everyone who came. And welcome to our three new board members: @boris@mick and @Django !
On Tuesday 3 October 2023, we're holding the first annual general meeting (AGM) for #CoSocial.
This is a big event for us. A small group of people formed this cooperative about six months ago, with the goal of creating more democratic, user-owned social media.
I think other #CoSocial members, like me, want to write up our playbook and share it with others. We've tailored our organisation to Canadian law and culture and the needs of Canadians. We'd love to connect with domestic coops in every US state and in every country and region around the world.
@evan ok i joined and paid membership fees. I'm not planning to create another Mastodon account. Is there any #CoSocial information I would have gotten when i joined the server?
here comes the chorus: "any good tools or methods for migrating olde posts for ppl who don't wish to dig into code or become a nuisance to the admins of their new Mastodon instance"? 🤔
