Today at PyCon US lunch, for the first time I met other people IRL (two people) who also watched the kdrama The Glory on Netflix and that made me so happy 😊 #PyConUS#kdrama
@AnnaAnthro Probably on purpose because he likes trying different things and I think also he doesn’t want to be pigeonholed. So it’s very on-brand for him to do Something Completely Different for what’s essentially a comeback role.
I think he’ll be the lead in a romantic comedy sageuk set to air later this year, which is a little more conventional, for him.
I need more recs for happy, found family, make-you-smile-and-warm-your-heart type of dramas. I don't mind murder and chaos as long as my people have a happy ending. Recent likes have been #BlossomsInAdversity, #StoryOfKunningPalace, I also liked #JoyOfLife & #MeetYourself.
@AnnaAnthro what?! Plagiarism? I think there is a HUGE difference between using something as inspiration and plagiarizing content. Gilchae didn't fall down the stairs. She didn't use emerald green curtains. No Aunt PittyPat with ridiculous curls. Rhett was not used as target practice nor was there a Northern princess trying to get in his pants.
Yes, story beats are similar, but that is NOT plagiarism!
@bougiewonderland@JillsJoy Grim Reapers or Guides to afterlife are common in all the areas influenced by Buddhism. King Yama controls the underworld and has assistants to bring souls across the bridge to him. Korea gets Buddhism from China around 4thC.
But Neo-Confucianism is much later. Zhu Xi, its main proponent, lived in 12thC. Korea is controlled by Mongol Yuan dynasty for 80 years until 1350 and gets neo-confucianism as state philosophy during that time.
I laughed out loud at seeing that the top edit on wikipedia was the #kdrama actor best known for playing villains so nasty that an elderly ajuma once hit him on the head with her purse at a restaurant.
Watch The Glory or Queen of Tears on Netflix to see him plot & scheme!
@AnnaAnthro I don’t know that he’s The Worst (probably isn’t, in fact), but the first that comes to my mind in Shin Seon-rok in The King’s Face. He’s forever tainted for me. I started watching The Last Empress right after this and couldn’t get past 10 minutes in the 2nd episode because I was still seeing red with fury!
But yeah. I have yet to stand I’m in anything. Because of that one role. HATED that character!
@bougiewonderland wasn’t he also the meany business man in My Love From A Star?!
I read somewhere that his nasty screen personas are completely different from who he really is. Apparently his big love is performing in musical theatre!
After the ending of “Queen of Tears”, I’m still watching “The Lies Within”. But I may also start this new drama. It’s a romance/fantasy (which I don’t mind ... I loved “Hotel Del Luna”), so I may like it.
@AnnaAnthro Yesterday, I watched the first episode of “The Atypical Family”, and, effectively, it was just so-so. Not really bad but also not very intriguing.
At this point, I may consider starting another #Kdrama like “Our Blues” (because there are Han Ji-min and Shin Min-a 😊 ).
