Hours before court was set to begin today, made a campaign stop at a construction site in Manhattan, where he was asked about David ’s testimony & their relationship. “David’s been very nice," Trump said. "He’s a nice guy.”

(He was nice, but his testimony has been seriously damning to Trump)

Trump was also asked whether he would pay fines if Justice found that he had violated the imposed on him by the court. “Oh, I have no idea,” he said.

"He's doing what the order tells him not to do," Christopher , a prosecutor, about 's alleged additional violations of the .

They described Trump's comments at an event this morning as another violation.

Trump was asked by reporters about David 's testimony, & Trump called Pecker
"a nice guy." Prosecutors say it was a message to Pecker & others: be "nice," or get attacked. (yeah I don’t know about that one)

The 12 jurors & 6 alternates were seated & David resumed his testimony about , a fmr Playboy model who said that she had a sexual relationship w/ . Prosecutors had saved the specifics of McDougal's story for today. It's an attention-catching way to start & the jurors are listening closely in these opening moments.

In the middle of the 2016 presidential campaign, called David , publisher of The National Enquirer. The candidate was seeking advice about a fmr who was trying to sell her story of an affair w/him, Pecker told jurors.

Pecker suggested a way to silence the model, . “I think that the story should be purchased,” he said he told Trump. “And I believe that you should buy it.”

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

says allegations about women & were always met by this response from , Trump's fmr fixer: "It's not true."

, Pecker & , the editor who interviewed , had a phone call after the interview. Howard said that McDougal claimed to have had an affair w/Trump. Cohen immediately denied the affair happened, but then said that he would look into it. Eventually, he said that a member of the group should try to buy the story.

Joshua , the prosecutor, is now asking about a call he had w/ about after interviewed her. Steinglass is emphasizing Trump’s direct personal involvement.
Pecker testifies Trump described Karen McDougal as "a nice girl." Pecker said this conversation made him believe that Trump "knew who she was." Trump is stone-faced as Pecker talks about this conversation.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

is now describing a follow-up conversation w/ in which he asked Cohen who would pay for KarenMcDougal's story. This was a central concern for Pecker. Cohen reassured him, telling him, "The boss will take care of it."

A recurring theme is the concern over who would pay for these Trump-related efforts. Pecker is now attesting to a key point prosecutors made in their opening statement, that was famously frugal.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

testifies that he knew "didn't have any authorization to disperse any funds from" the TrumpOrg. Even when the 2 went for lunch, Pecker says, Pecker always paid.

Pecker testifies that after negotiating w/ , he again asked Cohen who would pay. Cohen - who previously said that would - this time said, "You should pay." Pecker was reluctant, having already purchased another story on Trump's behalf, but Cohen swore he would eventually be made whole by Trump.

In addition to $150k for her lifetime rights, says that had a number of other requests, including being able to write for celebrity magazines, appearing on the cover of health & fitness magazines, & starting her own fitness clothing line & beauty product line. She also wanted to work as a red-carpet anchor.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

is now describing a 2002 conversation w/ where he asked Pecker not to run negative stories about him before his run for governor of California. He was ultimately elected & served from 2003-2011.

Pecker says that women did come forward about relationships that they had w/Schwarzenegger & he did not publish stories on them. One that Pecker passed on ended up in The Los Angeles Times.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

talked about for a long time, coming off as meandering as he described doing deals for Schwarzenegger once he entered politics. But Joshua , the prosecutor, then helped him link those deals to the matter at hand, asking: "Did you come to appreciate the legalities surrounding such an arrangement w/a political candidate?"

Pecker says he did.

The LA Times’ story about Schwarzenegger was very damaging.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

is openly admitting to his involvement in the scheme & is doing so quite candidly.

Pecker is now detailing the agreement , Enquirer's parent company, struck w/ . The contract guaranteed she would be put on 2 magazine covers & that the company would have the right to publish fitness columns by her. It's worth noting how bizarre this set-up was. It wasn't just buying her story — it was also giving her work w/AMI.

was all over on the negative coverage of in 2016. The acted like it came about organically & Trump was just reacting to it.

Pecker was asked about 's relationship to the Trump campaign. said Cohen always said he didn't work for the campaign, & that he was instead "Mr. Trump's personal attorney." But he also testified that Cohen fed them negative info about opponents.

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

"Michael was physically in every aspect of whatever the campaign was working on," said. He added that wasn't officially employed by the campaign, & may have heard things “informally" or "injected himself into it."

Pecker threw defense a bone when he said he didn’t know who Cohen spoke to, & that Cohen may have been acting of his own volition by getting more involved w/the campaign. [sure]

Nonilex,
@Nonilex@masto.ai avatar

said that after the , would call him & direct him to focus the negative coverage on whichever candidate had been most successful.

Pecker's testimony isn't just damaging to . He’s killing his career by going through headline after headline & suggesting he attacked Trump's rivals to aid Trump.

#Pecker was asked about being introduced to #SteveBannon, #Trump's top strategist, in Oct 2016. He recalled Trump said, "I believe you & Steve would get along really well.”

#Bannon told Pecker that he went thru some #NationalEnquirer articles, liked them, & had ideas.

This all happened around the time of #Wikileaks email dump, after a hack of #HillaryClinton's adviser John Podesta's acct, & the Trump team used that material A LOT.

During ’s questioning of , 's lawyers often objected to prosecutors couching Trump's relationship w/Pecker & as a - saying Trump isn’t facing a conspiracy charge.

🚨⇉ But Steinglass said on record one of the election statutes the case is based on does in fact have a conspiracy provision. That could prove important later when the is instructed on the they must consider in reaching a .

#Pecker was asked next about #Dino Sajudin, a #doorman who worked at a #Trump bldg & had a story to sell about Trump fathering a child out of wedlock.

the 1st of the 3 [#CatchAndKill deals]

Trump visibly responded when this story came up. Like yesterday, he frowned & shook his head.

Pecker said the love child story would’ve been a big story, & he believed it was important to have it "removed from the market." #MichaelCohen told him "the boss would be very pleased."

said called him furiously denying the child was Trump's, saying he offered to take a DNA test & bc was German-Irish & the woman was Hispanic, it was impossible.

FTR, Pecker was saying that indicated a child w/a woman couldn't be Trump's. ( 🤬 that he is)

Trump often talks "good genes" & bloodlines. He denigrates from & says undocumented immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country."
