🤩 It’s getting real! 🤩 Sinn und Bedeutung, Europe’s largest conference on , is starting tomorrow with a special session on multimodal communication!

Anyone else feels heading ranks (h1 to h6) are meant for documents like MS Word documents/essays and that the HTML spec should have a generic <caption>/<legend> element for UI components like product lists, widgets, article lists, etc.?

In my interpretation <ol><li><a><article><h1>(product name... is the correct structure for a list of product thumbnails wise, but I doubt this is right for in practice.

I should have put this one in a slide for my class since they often are triggered about how I get about the chronic <div>-itis plaguing web dev. It’s not just my opinion, it's in the spec! (https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/grouping-content.html#the-div-element)

If you are into programming languages, learning Ocaml (or other ML dialect like StandardML) makes a lot of sense, it's helpful for reading papers, watching conference talks, understanding basics of type theory, going through PL courses and all other fancy stuff.

Here is a good introductionary course on OCaml and functional programming:

Things that have come up at work recently:

"Is death a condition?"
"What is broader than civet cats?"
"What is a mosquito when it's not being a vector of infection?"
"Can a newborn be an audience? What about an outdoor farmers market?"
"Are 'wildlife photo opportunities' a 'place' "?
"How big does something have to be before it's zoonotic and not just a "Parasitic arthropod"?"

Emergent properties of Large Language Models (LLM)

The Unpredictable Abilities Emerging From Large AI Models
Large language models like ChatGPT are big enough that they're displing startling, unpredictable behaviors
https://www.quantamagazine.org/the-unpredictable-abilities-emerging-from-large-ai-models-20230316
Discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35195106

Researchers at Google Brain showed how a model prompted to explain itself (a capacity called chain-of-thought reasoning) could correctly solve a math word problem, while the same model without that prompt could not.

Comments: article placed here due to

  1. use of prompt engineering + chain of thought (mentioned above)
  2. application to long documents (here, applied to legal domain, but broadly applicable)
  3. novelty

Little grammar tip for y’all…

Use “furthermore” to add to a point you’re making. Use “moreover” to move on to a new point that’s related.

Example:
I love Envy apples because they’re sweet and crispy. Furthermore, they are slightly tart. Moreover, they pair well with peanut butter.

Furthermore adds to the list. Moreover adds a reason of a different kind.

They’re interchangeable as a colloquialism. But formally, this is their difference.

Subheadings, subtitles, alternative titles and taglines in HTML

Autopoiesis. A beautiful word.
And an utterly superfluous one.
You cannot do anything useful with it.
The word "living" is entirely sufficient. So forget about autopoiesis and work on living systems, making them "even more alive!"

nielspflaeging,

@gimulnautti
We are not doing semantics here.
Semantics is a science. But we are talking practice. And your point is fair. I think I clarified it all when I said I was actually referring not to "living" but to "living systems." Apparently, that's not good enough for you. Fine.

But again: What we talk here is not . Just like "having sex" is not !
