Loved #Shogun. Highly recommend. Brilliantly crafted series. Anna Sawai (Mariko), Tadanobu Asano (Yabushige) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Toranaga) in particular were oh wow outstanding. 9/10
First #XMen97. Now #Shogun. I don't think I can handle anymore of these tragic TV shows goddammit. At my age, I just can't. Why can't we have a normal happy wedding you may kiss the bride ending anymore??
@Onceoday Oh I love the Netflix adaptation, it is very well done, love the characters and how the novel storylines map onto them. It's just that Shogun is such a big surprise for me in how utterly fantastic it is. It is such an old school sweeping epic, with so much attention to details, just blows me away.
"The bottom line is that protagonist John Blackthorne could have arrived in Japan aboard the Millennium Falcon, and I wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow. Because we’re no longer talking about the English sailor William Adams. We’re talking about a made-up character."
The 2024 Shogun TV series stacks up pretty well to history, says a Japanese historian - but the surrounding conversation around "colonialism" is ridiculous.
@unseenjapan I think as long as it feels real it’s good enough for me. It doesn’t have to be fully correct, just correct enough to not make it silly. L
