some of the #chi2024 papers i was a coauthor on were accepted, and some were rejected. i can honestly say i would not have predicted which ones fell into which categories correctly, which is probably a problem.
i think i had enough #chi2024 submissions to say with some statistical backing and not entirely sour grapes that review outcomes felt pretty random. that can't be good, right? most of my papers made it to RR, a primary reason one didn't was b/c a new method we introduced for self-training small models didn't outcompete GPT4… NAACL/EMNLP might have their problems, but …
#TIL that you can place inline histograms in a paper... presumably with some LaTeX magic?? or just a... screenshot/emoji of a real histogram? what is this wizardry?
#chi2024 PSA/TIL: if you are using Overleaf and, like me, of a more advance age or optical needs, the overleaf editor font size can be changed via an option under "menu".
imma read so fast and so much that the digital library thinks i'm a bot! (which really isn't that much, it's detection for this has really low precision)
I'm really happy to see that the #CHI2024 paper chairs try to work against paper bloat. My impression is that lifting the page limit has not led to significantly higher quality, but conciseness became less valuable. This disqualified shorter contributions, that were also officially encouraged but in practice maybe perceived as "less important" (at least that's my impression based on the reviews I received 😄).
I have mixed feelings about #CHI2024 being in Hawaii, given the discussions of tourism there and the history. I would very much like to go (I miss my CHI friends and Hawaii is amazing) but I'll have to think about how to approach this.
Here's a short 🧵 with an introduction to the four other LBWs our @InteractionsUniSG group will present at #chi2024 next week.
Three of them were led by Master students from our #ubiquitouscomputing course! 🚀
Congrats to Nouran Soliman on a fantastic talk on her best paper awarded work on meronimity (mitigating barriers to engaging in public conversations with partial, self-selected, and verified identity signals)! 👏👏 We also deployed a system for it right here in Mastodon at @LiTweeture a while back 😌 Read the paper here: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3613904.3642241#chi2024
remind me again what the penalty is for sharing sections of #chi2024 reviews publicly? it's pretty amazing the entire justification for reject from the 1AC is insufficient novelty (one single arxiv paper from 20 days before, which we even referenced! … shouldn't have done that i guess), and our work about ML applied to user interfaces supposedly not being relevant to CHI.
In a world with many “smart” devices, we need better tools to let us be in control of them.
@raynez and team built one such tool that enables, say, parents, to create ✨immersive stories ✨ that leverage smart speakers, lights, thermostats, fans, and other digitally connected devices, in addition to traditional pixels on a screen.
Check out Lei's presentation on the future of storytelling and #augmentedreality at #chi2024 today at 2pm in room 306 (in 30 min!)
