I know #GeminiProtocol or #SpartanProtocol all are far from perfect (and will be hard to fix as they have no version by design to prevent additions). Still I believe they are the things that has taken off most and really means something symbolically about a separate non-commercial web.
Maybe it’ll all be rewritten with totally different protocols and content converted (it’s mostly markdown-like) but it’s still good to use & promote the version we have now.
With its slowly growing content I see an opportunity for #GeminiProtocol to become a standard to keep using old machines that otherwise would become e-waste.
Most of the web is painful to unusable today if you have a PC that’s one decade old or more. Yet the majority of actually useful information is still text with a few included documents or images. Gemini will always be useable on E-readers when we know the web content may sometimes be readable but mostly not.
Even though at this point #IneverDoAnything one of the aims of my #atomique project was to include a minimal client for smolweb. It would include basic Gemini reading and caching, as well as consulting markdown notes in folders.
It would be just C++ and run on ESP32 device like the M5 Paper but be portable to more powerful devices for a similar minimalist experience.
This week I have been more involved on the #geminiprotocol side rather than the #Fediverse and it has been very refreshing... 😊
More engagement and less distraction, posts on platforms like Bubbles or Station aren't meant to consume are just people talking to each other, no links to videos, pictures or memes... It is just text inside the gorgeous frame of #Lagrange and each platform is so well integrated into this amazing client, whether is the desktop or the android version, that your experience feels like with native applications... This is just amazing...
I used to follow #gemini to check on a certain smol hypertext system, and now the hashtag is flooded by posts about Google's LLM. :sadness:
Oh well, time to follow #GeminiProtocol.
I hate that Google’s AI is named Gemini. Now when I tell people that I explore geminispace they think AI rather than smolnet. To be fair, no one really thought smolnet anyway. #geminiprotocol#smolnet
Ah…
heads up to #Geminauts:
search service geminispace.info will go down on 1st June 2024.
The current VPS contract will end at this day and i decided not to renew.
It was an interesting journey the last 3 years, but life has changed since then and it's time for me to move on.
Maybe i'll reuse the domain for other gemini related stuff in the future, but for the moment i decided to take a break in hosting a gemini service.
It seems that there is only one android mobile client (rosy cow) that is actively in development for the #geminiprotocol . This is worrying, as this eco-system is still relatively new. Luckily, the desktop clients are still thriving with Lagrange by @skyjake.fi is sitting on the throne.
Perhaps it is time for me to get my gempod up and running...
@liaizon@skyjake.fi rosy cow is on its own repo: fdroidrepos://rosy-crow.app/fdroid/repo?fingerprint=3913F741766E054E5F09BEB005718174E7507EFA3D75EF890DF464DF5B63FA84
