I hate that Google’s AI is named Gemini. Now when I tell people that I explore geminispace they think AI rather than smolnet. To be fair, no one really thought smolnet anyway.

Ah…

heads up to :
search service geminispace.info will go down on 1st June 2024.

The current VPS contract will end at this day and i decided not to renew.
It was an interesting journey the last 3 years, but life has changed since then and it's time for me to move on.

Maybe i'll reuse the domain for other gemini related stuff in the future, but for the moment i decided to take a break in hosting a gemini service.

@sirjofri I do the same, for quick searches I'm using the mobile browser. Also I am a #geminiprotocol user so it makes sense to use it under #plan9 as is more convenient.

Installing browsers on a :rpi: Pi 3 running

  • NetSurf 5Mb
  • Firefox & dependencies : 300 Mb

And don’t get me started on launch times nowadays as a quad core CPU at 1.2 GHz is “slow” and “low end”.

Yes I am aware NetSurf cannot display most modern websites. I am not blaming Firefox. I blame the websites.

When is that thing finally going to rule the world ?

santiago,
@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

@allanon Same. I envision a future with human-made pages only, except with clients that emphasize (predefined) beautiful typography and layout. Just text and images, all respecting a design book type layout with hyperlinks and search.

Technology isn’t the problem. We need a parallel non capitalist internet. Part of it already exists. It needs better search, better clients, better understanding from the general people. I believe the Fediverse could be at the center.

It's great to have gopher and gemini protocol, but why not use markdown (or orgmode) as a simple yet powerful one ?

Imagine, your notes rendered natively in your browser : headings, lists and so on, but no bloated js.

Last week I found out about the Gemini protocol. It's like a light weight alternative to the web. There is not much to it. Every resource loads only one file. You could compare the experience of browsing it to having reading mode in your browser always on. I like the simplicity of it and the DIY mentality

I worked on a little server for it the over the weekend but there is nothing on it yet so I'll post the link some other time.

I have been on Gemini since 2021, a few variations of my capsule have evolved over that time but its still me. Ive noticed a few of the advocates at the time, are not on Gemini now. I wonder why? Is it lack of discovery or connection with others that the web gives so easily now, or is it loss of interest? I doubt its the level of difficulty, yes you need to put the effort in creating information, but we are just talking about text files here. universal interface.

While watching GNV's crawler doing its job, I noticed yet another small protocol in the spirit of Gopher and Gemini: Guppy.

https://smol.pub/manual

Opinion: I don’t think markdown / html should ever had offered more than two heading levels. One for chapter/article titles and one for sections inside the text body. You know, like most books. Having to melt lead for a new font size made you think twice about purpose.

When you give people six header level options they seem to get confused.

but I’d like once to write a browser that cared about typography and uniformity by default.

This is the Fediverse, so I wouldn't mention this to the people I follow on Bluesky, most of whom aren't interested in the explorative aspects of online life, but: if you're interested in online-but-off-web computing, take a look at the tildes listed on tilde.wiki. I'm active on one of them, and it's been so much fun getting back to a vision of the internet that isn't based on platforms.
