#China is home to around 200 #tiankeng, which are mostly distributed from the central #Shaanxi province down to the #GuangxiZhuang autonomous region in the southwest. Roughly 1/3 of the country consists of #karst — the highest proportion of overall surface area of any country in the world — compared with just under 1/5 in the United States.

A company is hoping to undertake a project on in the Valley.

is trying to determine if it’s economically feasible to mine metals from the tailings of four former mines that closed decades ago.

The company says if it goes ahead, it would clean up the mess that was left behind.

In the remote landscapes of #Madagascar's #Antsalova district, hidden within the #Andrefana Dry Forests, lies one of the world's most extraordinary & challenging-to-reach UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the #TsingyDeBemaraha, aka the #ForestOfKnives.

Tsingy de Bemaraha, meaning "the place where one cannot walk barefoot," is a #geological marvel shaped over millions of years by forces of #nature.

Made the #UNESCO #WorldHeritageSite list, 1990.

Day20 #ArtAdventCalendar Sometimes I feel "stone-agey" in #design, especially after a #hike in a very special mountain #forest. An ancient #ochre quarry is hidden on the slope. #Legends tell of a magical snake at a spring, often a reference to #geological features. There is still some eroded rock in different ochre colours. I first hammer it into small pieces until I can grind it. This produces pure ochre pigment.

I find rock in all it's forms just fascinating. I love the striations, pattern, color, texture and design. This particular rocky surface with it's hills, gully's, dark colors and deep grooves seemed to form a landscape from another planet. Found at

Gorgeous lepidolite specimen that friends bought from the recent Rocks & Minerals show here.

is a lilac-gray/rose-colored member of the group of . It's the most abundant bearing mineral & al secondary source of this metal. It's a major source of the alkali metal too.

Gorgeous lepidolite specimen in my left hand. You can see mica metals.

Scientists Discover Astonishing 36-Million-Year Geological Cycle That Triggers Bursts of

“Scientists have published research indicating that movements in Earth’s tectonic plates indirectly stimulate bursts of biodiversity through 36-million-year cycles by causing sea levels to rise and fall. They believe that these cycles, traceable back 250 million years, critically influence marine species diversity.”
