If you are curious and courageous, and run #Debian testing or unstable, you might like to try the latest snapshot of #Gajim by @gajim. It features message replies and message reactions.
Expect bugs! This is not a release version, but a snapshot. It's called "experimental" for a reason.
echo "deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ experimental main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/experimental.list
@tennoseremel fair enough if we're talking app level, but you can't just download and install "the Jabber app". What we're trying to sell is the entire concept of federation, etc., which I think might be easier if we say "they're compatible with e-chat. Like y'know, with e-mail but for chat?"
(Not saying it's a silver bullet or anything of course but it might be worth a try?)
@christian@larma We (The XSF / People who write and implement XEPs) have a tendency to wait with advancing a XEP to stable until we have sufficient implementation experience.
Your question (which matters more for end users) should be: Why hasn't this been implemented?
Implementing reactions is not as straight as it might seem. Both #Conversations_im and #Gajim wanted to rewrite the database layer to accommodate this feature. On the Conversations side we also wanted to rework the UI before this.

#YunoHost devs are testing#Prosody as #xmpp#jabber replacement for metronome to get better integration with the system and better compliance with jabber standards. Also new default features as A/V calls.
W nowym dużym wydaniu eJabberD 24.02 udostępniono możliwość logowania do serwerów Matrix.
XMPP jest standardem sieciowym i to on powinien napędzać komunikację.
Jeden standard a ty wybierasz sobie klienta i serwer jaki pasuje.
"sms4you forwards messages from and to SMS and connects either with sms4you-xmpp or sms4you-email to choose the other mean of communication. Nice for receiving or sending SMS, independently from carrying a SIM card."
A few months ago, I persuaded a client to abandon an external cloud system and use Nextcloud on their own server instead. Powered by FreeBSD and ZFS, it has already demonstrated its strengths on a couple of occasions (such as in the case of a snapshot rollback). This morning, they expressed the desire to abandon the various WhatsApp groups they use for coordination and to use a solution "all on their servers." I was inspired and quickly installed both an ejabberd and a Matrix server (Synapse) - which they will probably prefer, according to the latest news they sent me - on two FreeBSD jails.
Today, we have the awareness and experience of what it means to give our data to large companies, completely losing control over it. We have the tools, so why not use them?
And I'm really happy when someone like them, thanks to their willingness to try "new" solutions, realizes the alternatives to the colorful, advertised, warmly recommended (by salespeople) "proprietary" solutions.
@stefano that’s amazing! Maybe you find this also useful & interesting: https://coopcloud.tech/ “Co-op Cloud is a software stack that aims to make hosting libre software applications simple for small service providers. Eg Nextcloud, Jitsi, Mediawiki, Rocket.chat and many more!”
