I edited more of my next book. I hope to get it out before August. I also spent time playing a bit with PICO-8 again. I should spend some time doing the same with Picotron. I’m OK with Lua but would really prefer Python or Ruby.

Playing around with a basic "2.5d" version of the map system

Definitely needs optimising, though, this is currently using ~80% of the CPU

a basic 2d level drifts around the viewport, but it's slightly 3d so you can see the edges of the blocks stretching off to a back wall that scrolls as if in parallax

got it down to <55% CPU, but brought it back up to ~58% by splitting out the background and foreground layers so the main loop could draw sprites in between

the same room with a crudely-drawn mariosprite standing in it, set just slightly back from the tile layer there's some stats in the corner; the framerate is a solid 60 and the cpu usage hovers between 57 and 61%

here it is with a basic character-tracking camera

it's clear you need a cleverer camera for this, as even though it doesn't really obscure anything much, it feels pretty bad when there's a 3d wall between the centre of the screen and your character — even if you're facing that wall

the same game with a mario sprite jumping around it. the camera tracks after him with some fairly basic logic

WIP backups / file versioning for : all disk writes are (optionally) logged and earlier versions can be fetched by sticking a timestamp on the end:

@zep what is the planned memory envelope for a app?
the doc mentions ‘16mb’ but unclear if that’s mappable memory and/or lua memory space.
(asking cause alpha is not enforcing any limit
afaik)
