Why do typing keyboards have the letters on the keys and musical keyboards don’t? You’d think that this thought-technology would have been backported to musical keyboards after typewriters caught on, but no no, we must have our little traditions.

Like, I didn’t know before I began lessons last year that every keyboard key has a single, lettered note permanently mapped to it. Why would I assume that? If they were static, the letters would be on em, because that’s table-stakes UI, right?! Phooey.

AndyHat,
@AndyHat@anti-social.online avatar

@jmac If you believe my old piano teacher, it's to discourage looking at the keys while playing. One can get by as a hunt-and-peck typist, but for musical keyboard, you need to get used to not looking at the keys as early as possible.

Texas appears to possibly be gearing up to defy the Supreme Court ruling giving the Biden administration permission to remove Texas' deadly barbed wire so that federal officials can access immigrants -- word is that Texas is still putting up more wire.

If Texas does defy the Supreme Court, it will apparently be the first similar case since racists in Arkansas tried to defy the Supreme Court decision on school desegregation (Brown v. Board of Education - 1954). It didn't end well for Arkansas.

AndyHat,
@AndyHat@anti-social.online avatar

@lauren And they're using the Texas National Guard to do it? Can't Biden just order the NG to stop doing that? Or is the NG really answerable only to governors and not the President?

craiggrannell, to random
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

There is another side to this. When I subscribe to eg Wired, I get that physical mag every other month. But it doesn’t include thousands of other mags. So there’s a trade-off between different types of plans. But like Jay says, these feel like entirely different things and could ideally do with different descriptive terms. If for nothing else than people so often conflate the two and are shocked when they lose access to digital content.

AndyHat,
@AndyHat@anti-social.online avatar

@craiggrannell @jsit Of course, even your Wired subscription bundles two parts that work differently. You get the print issues that you can keep forever, and you get online access to Wired's entire archive but that disappears if your subscription lapses, even for the issues that came out during the term of your subscription.

I hate that maintaining perpetual access to subscription content means either perpetual fees or having to store my own copies of the printed artifacts.

And I love, love, love the rare exceptions like weightlessbooks.com where my subscription issues remain available forever even if I decline to renew something.

While I had hoped to avoid this, I've gotten so many queries regarding my opinions on Threads issues that I've finally gone ahead and created a profile there, so that I can at least survey the landscape and provide semi-reasonable responses to such queries. By avoiding use of apps for this (instead using the Web UI), the most intrusive aspects of the platform can probably be avoided. You can follow me there if you wish -- that will provide me with some interactions for testing and be appreciated. I won't at this point predict how long I'll keep that profile open. Thanks.

I wish just once I could play one of the games I bought without first having to download a 40 gb file just to update a few game elements. Nobody and I mean nobody in the gaming world cares about people for whom that is like 2 days worth of data allowance.

AndyHat,
@AndyHat@anti-social.online avatar

@phaysis @briankrebs Steam has mostly solved this, which leads to sometimes downloading a meg or two and then waiting for it to rewrite 40 or 50 gigs of pack files...

    As much as I despise cigarettes, the British proposal to increase the legal age for smoking year by year in an attempt to eventually ban them is inane. It will simply create a black market and cause far more damage in the end. This kind of prohibition never works and is beneath stupidity.

    190: Tapper (1983)

    The bars in this game were rough. Failure to serve someone in time would find the bartender dragged across a bartop and hurled into a wall. So you had to carefully balance sliding drinks along the bartop, grabbing empties, and collecting tips to kick off a show that would distract rowdy drinkers. Quality stuff in the arcades – but also check out the surprisingly excellent port.

    Play it on:
