Y'all seem like the nerds to ask: any recs for thick index cards that hold up to fountain pens?

I prefer a matte paper (less risk of ink smears; a concern for the discerning southpaw) but mostly just want ones that can take writing on both sides without a ton of bleed

Lined preferred; dotted will work

Can we get an update to that comic of death with the claw machine where our dude finally gets the prize he wanted? Love that for him

We're watching and we got to the part where we find out why the giraffes were banished and I laughed for a solid minute

You think that's hyperbole but it's not

I couldn't breathe

Does anyone have an explanation from a medical or public health expert (no guesses please) on why, when testing to END isolation AFTER COVID, two negative tests need to be spaced 48hrs apart?

I get that early in an infection, it may take a couple days for viral load to reach detectable levels. I'm just curious why we use the same spacing when symptoms are resolv[ed/ing]. Why test on days 6 and 8 instead of say, 6 and 7?

We're following guidance; I'm just interested in the reasoning.

It's 2pm and I'm still in bed (technically I got up and did 2.5 miles of rowing so I'm BACK in bed but whatever) and I can't tell if it's disability, illness, or just extremely not feeling like it because it's the weekend and my blanket is cozy and my phone is full of books so how could getting up improve my quality of life in any way?

Good morning, if you missed it last week I have a new historical fantasy out in Friends Journal: https://www.friendsjournal.org/refuse-all-their-colors/

It's based on true events and inspired in part by other historical fantasies that left me wondering, how would Quakers through history respond to magic?

Annalee, to random
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

I have a new short story out in @friendsjournal!

It's got ! It's got thread magic! It's got Alexander Hamilton! (He's the villain*)!

It's based on a true story!†

*(Kinda)
†(not the magic part)

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@CatherineFlick @friendsjournal thank you! It was inspired in part by @maryrobinette's Glamourist Histories and wondering how Quakers would engage with that kind of widespread casual magic.

Also by reading Revolutionary War records of both sides mistreating Quakers and being mad about it

Here's what I did with my weekend. Still some finishing to do tomorrow, but it's coming together.

I'm really pleased with how the laser etching came out on the sleeves and shoulders (it took a lot of work, please clap).

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

I probably said this last project, but the sewing lesson I'm constantly relearning is that I go fast by going slow. I pinned the collar instead of basting and it came out fine but was very annoying.

For the sleeves, I ease stitched, then basted, and honestly it took less time to actually set them in than it did to complain on the Internet about how annoying it is to set sleeves.

Make it nice or make it twice - and remember: pins are for fitting, not assembly.

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

Build is done but only one picture because it fits me but not my dress form. I need to redo my moulage; 6 months of consistent rowing has changed my shoulder slope and shape.

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

And here's the finished costume. I'm taking notes for Version II:

  • more screen accurate fabric
  • screen print instead of etching the pattern
  • do the full bust adjustment (didn't bother because knit, and it's mostly okay but as always, it would be better with)
  • flare the skirt (my block has a pencil skirt shape but Una and Uhura's minidress uniforms are more A-line)

School report!

We're now wrapping up Week 3 of the term. I'm partway through Week 4 of math (function stuff), and I've gotten into Week 5 of programming lectures (variables and such) but have yet to do any of the actual coding assignments due to technical difficulties (which I finally resolved JUST now, like literally minutes ago).

Week 4 goals:

  1. Catch up programming assignments through Week 4.

  2. Math lectures/problems through Week 5.

I've finally trained Instagram's silly algo that if it's going to show me stuff from people I don't follow, it should be 50% pottery tips and 50% memes from Star Wars: The Clone Wars

How do I get it to freeze like this? It's attained its final form, no more can be asked of it

Today is one of those days where I'm really grateful for science and the forward progress of medicine.

I'm fine, but I had a CM attack and passed out this afternoon. That's a rare occurrence, but always a risk.

Thanks to effective meds, attacks are rare and usually mild. But days like this remind me that I used to just ... Live like this? All the time?

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

Like I'd be at work and an attack would start and I'd just cross my fingers and hope it wasn't a bad one because otherwise I'd burn all my sick leave by February.

Now I'm at a job where the sick leave policy is basically "if you're sick, leave," but I also don't get attacks often enough to even burn through DC's statutory sick leave, so I don't have to worry about it. I can just go home.

Science is pretty cool sometimes.

By the way, if you want to check out what it's like when a post goes viral by Fediverse standards (300+ boosts), consider the replies I have received in this thread:

At least 2 people have blocked me because of my replies to their replies about this post!

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@brainwane Good grief those replies

That one person seems like an example of - not precisely snitch-tagging, but hashtags as a threat? Intentionally increasing the discoverability of a discussion using contentious tags that are likely to draw people who want an argument

Like what is the point of those tags otherwise

Hey nerds, I'm looking for recs of adventure games where translation/language learning are a core mechanic

I don't mean games that contain languages, but ones where learning/translating a language are how you win. Examples: Heaven's Vault, Chants of Shanaar.

I also loved Tunic, which is probably the best example of a translation mechanic I've seen - but it's a soulslike, and I'm looking for adventure games. I generally don't play games that rely on manual dexterity.

Welp, had to involve myself in a situation on the train home tonight and I have to ask my male friends: how often do you talk to your buddies about not harassing women in public?

I don't mean intervening when you see them do it. How often do you just, in normal conversation, establish leaving women alone in public as the table stakes of basic decency?

Bay Area humans! Tonight, 9/20, I'll be in conversation with the inimitable Naomi Klein, to discuss her new book DOPPLEGANGER. The event is in Oakland, 7pm, at the First Presbyterian Church. Tickets are still available, starting at $12. https://app.gopassage.com/events/naomi-klein

@annaleen @brainwane same, same. I feel like there should be a rule that if you're going to get confused all the time with another writer, you've gotta be cool. Or at least, not an absolute jackass.

I couldn't have asked for a better doppelganger.

I'm a self-taught ceramicist and I mostly do tile. I've attempted some hand built dishes but I should probably take a class.

In the meantime I'd particularly like to get good at hand building mugs.

So I'm going to make a hundred of them.

@acdha remastered version is out! And the animated movie is entertaining. I wouldn't call it good, but it's worth a watch.
