Some of my friends that are convicted felons are 100% innocent of what they were accused and convicted of. Some of my friends that are convicted felons are guilty, and absolutely did what they were accused of. I don't make fun of people for being convicted felons, and I don't ostracize them. Instead, I don't let bad people around me. My definition of bad focuses on the choices that a person made in the past, and the choices that they make now. Some of the worst people, will never be felons.

@mekkaokereke one of my favorite college professors was literally a terrorist. After he got out of prison, he dedicated his entire life to serving and trying to heal the community he'd harmed.

...And literally the whole town would call him up and tell him whenever they saw one of his students trying to play rich kid frat games - guy was an absolute Teddy Bear until you heard him ask someone to stay after class because he'd "heard some things that concerned him."

Just throwing it out there now, preemptively: any suspect flags you see hanging from my house, any insurrections that I may or may not have taken part in, any World War II or civil war memorabilia that you may find prominently displayed in my house...

My wife did it! Blame her! That woman doesn't know how to act!

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@mekkaokereke meanwhile at my place there's a 100% chance that any spite flags are my fault

Exhibit A: the pride flag I started flying because a first floor neighbor had someone come up on her patio and rip hers down. Bought her a replacement and got one for us too and we will get gayer every time someone tries it

(So I can actually relate to spite flags; just not to being a fascist dillweed)

“The quiet, pervasive devaluation of frontend - Josh Collinsworth blog” https://joshcollinsworth.com/blog/devaluing-frontend

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@baldur what is odd to me about this article is that the author clocks the gendered nature of this but doesn't really get into the history of that specifically as it relates to front end.

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@baldur when I was starting to code, "front end is devalued because people think it's women's work" was well-known.

Then, as with other types of computing, there was an intentional effort by men to revitalize front end's image by masculinizing it. The broification of the front end pushed many women out (because the culture was hostile!). Wages and prestige rose. Institutional knowledge and best practices were lost to this "disruption."

None of this "just happened."

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@baldur and to the point of institutional knowledge being lost we've now got folks equivocating and unsure if this is "really" happening when it's been happening the whole time.

If there was a brief reprieve from it, it was because of broification, not because it was a more enlightened time.

A nice side benefit of the rowing is that now my traps are big enough to provide some padding for my shoulder blades when I lean back on a hard bench 💪.

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

Next steps:

  1. start a rowing ministry among quakers on the grounds that it makes our ancient pews less uncomfortable

  2. People will protest that we should just replace the pews with more comfortable seating

  3. Inform everyone they have been pranked into understanding universal design

  4. Counter-discourse erupts about historic value, aesthetics, and how comfortable seating will encourage sleeping in Meeting

  5. Inform everyone they have been pranked into understanding universal design

If you are offended by the idea that a person with a terminal disease should coddle herself a bit and enjoy what remains of her life, then I am not someone you should follow/befriend on here. My angle of approach is just going to anger you, and I don't want to be a cause of anger.

A part of the old me still lingers, wants everyone to approve of me and think I'm edgy and informed and Angry Enough.

But mostly I just want to enjoy the fact that I am alive today. And tomorrow, if applicable.

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker I just did a long journal entry yesterday about feeling good about things in my life even though I know there are a lot of Bad Things Happening and came to the conclusion that it's a fallacy to think of hope and despair or joy and sorrow as poles on a spectrum, or two sides of the same coin. They can in fact be entirely separate coins, and the pockets of our life have room for all of them.

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker which is of course a different question than whether we have all of them on display on social media, or whether we trade equally in all of them, or share all of them with others.

We should resist the urge to assume we know what's in other people's pockets just because we see what they take out and pass around.

hello I have I created some more tongue-in-cheek ha-ha no-actually-really-serious images to help you manage replies in lieu of affordances to help you manage replies please steal and use if you find useful or, so help me, funny

  1. Do not reply unless you have direct experience
  2. Do not reply with a software suggestion
  3. (multipart) This is an observation. Do not attempt to help. No reply necessary.

YOU MAY REPLY if you have a suggestion or request for another helpful informational message.

An information message to manage replies. It reads DO NOT REPLY WITH A SOFTWARE SUGGESTION ANTWORTEN SIE NICHT MIT EINEM SOFTWARE-VORSCHLAG NO RESPONDA CON UNA SUGERENCIA DE SOFTWARE NE RÉPONDEZ PAS AVEC UNE SUGGESTION DE LOGICIEL

1/25: How do you feel about writers who write outside of their gender/sexuality/race?

Flip the question: how would you feel about a writer who ONLY ever wrote inside their gender/sexuality/race?

(They're not exactly stretching themselves or developing their art, are they?)

Yes, it's easy to mess up writing the other. "How not to" isn't a topic I can answer in a toot. But it's important for writers to try to see the world through other eyes.

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross yeah ten years ago I would hold plenty of space for the possibility that they were just clueless and feeling defensive, but in 2024 the only people saying "but historical accuracy" with a straight face are people who think they're being way more subtle than they actually are

Even being from the US I'm going to be muting a bunch of phrases and tags leading up to the election.

I used to work for Congress. It's safe to say I care about politics. But I'm trying to reserve my attention and energy for when it's useful.

Call of C'thulu: Dark Corners Of The Earth had a "sanity" mechanic where looking at the monsters would cost you sanity so you had to only do it when necessary. That's not a bad approximation of how brains actually work.

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

We live in a media environment where our rage is a commodity. The systems we rely on to stay informed are designed to piss us off, and to syphon that energy off and monetize it.

That outrage mining depletes us. It's extractive. And it's practically unavoidable.

But I've got A LOT going on that I don't share in public. I can't afford to waste my energy. That doesn't mean I'm not paying attention, or I don't care - it just means my anger isn't available for consumption. I'm putting it to work.

"Always connect to an external, low voltage power supply before opening a door when the vehicle has no power," Tesla says, "to avoid breaking a window."

How is this a real sentence?

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

@mekkaokereke I really want QTs on here because I have a funny but tangential story about someone getting "locked in their car" because they didn't realize power locks can be manually opened but "thank God the windows were open so we could climb out through those."

We tried to tell them but they didn't believe us

Anyway if that person were a car they would be a Tesla

Annalee, to random
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

I have an additional take on the Chuck Tingle thing, cause in his blog post he talked about how TLA is okay with someone presenting in niqab but not with him covering his face, and as a person who wears religious dress and covers I have opinions about that

My opinion is that he's right. We get to choose what parts of our bodies to show other people, because our bodies belong to us.

If you only respect that when you respect the person's reason...you don't actually respect it.

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

If an event said I could only attend if I removed my cover, I wouldn't tell them "you have to let me cover because God told me to." That's not their business. That's between me and Jesus.

I'd tell them that I'm only available for events that respect the bodily autonomy of attendees and participants. If they had some compelling reason, like idk the event location is home to rare birds who dive-bomb hats and bandanas, then we could work something out.

"People think it's weird" isn't a reason.

Annalee, to random
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

The wild thing about being one of the writers of the Code of Conduct everyone uses is I sometimes see my words quoted on blog posts where an event or org is getting called out for not abiding by their own CoC and it sometimes makes me wish there was a realistic way to do a "use it or lose it" open source license where you can use and adapt the code of conduct but only if you actually enforce it

Like you can't just put it on your website and call it done

(There isn't a realistic way to do this)

Annalee,
@Annalee@wandering.shop avatar

Anyway yes I'm vague posting about the Texas Library Association!

I do generally think it's important to draw a distinction between harassment based on disability and refusal or failure to accommodate a disability. The two often go hand in hand, but they're not the same thing.

But also don't invite someone to your event who is famous for publicly presenting in a way you don't want them presenting

That's like inviting Teller and being mad he won't talk

Hey folks. Everyone--EVERYONE--can get got by a scammer at some point.

When we blame folks who get socially engineered for their carelessness or lack of vigilance, we're making it less likely that people will self-report when they got got, and perpetuating the myth that all we need is vigilance to avoid scams.

The narrative that only fools get scammed helps scammers. Don't fall for it.

It occurs to me that "blow a fuse" isn't a great metaphor for losing one's temper, because when a fuse blows, things stop expending energy.

It would make more sense if "to blow a fuse" meant "to get overwhelmed and shut down."

You know what, lawyers are awesome.

I know they're an easy target for jokes but when a giant bureaucracy is trying to steamroll you with "it's policy" when they have decided civil rights laws don't apply to them, you know who makes them come correct?

Lawyers.

Yeah, they're expensive, and no, it shouldn't be necessary to get lawyers to fight evil for us because there should just be less evil. But when you need to fight evil, lawyers are fucking great at it.

I've been thinking lately about how we teach folks about digital security and safety and how we don't really have a way to retire old advice

I know folks who heard they should never connect to a public or unfamiliar Wi-Fi network, never scan a QR code, never charge their phone at a public outlet - and they never got the stand down memo that those threats have been largely mitigated and as long as they're keeping their phones and browsers up to date, it's usually fine to do those things.

Read an article today about why Americans think alcohol has health benefits and it's apparently another "well the French are healthy and they do X so it's healthy to do X."

So here's your periodic reminder that France (and Italy, and Sweden, and Japan, and basically every country you've seen in a "this country is so healthy, what's their secret?" headline) has universal health care.

The secret is access to health care. It's always access to health care.
