Go outside or go to jail: Top NC Republican targets trans restroom rights (www.rawstory.com)

Christian nationalist North Carolina Republican Lt. Governor Mark Robinson, currently the leading candidate for the GOP nomination for governor, launched an attack on transgender women years after the Tar Heel State’s last GOP governor cost the state millions – and possibly billions – of dollars, and cost him his political...

Apytele,

That particular bit gave me pause as well. Ah yes, lynch mobs! According to conservatives, one of the proudest points in American history!

Apytele,

Assuming:

  1. you’re not actually in charge of her or hold some other position of seniority that she’s trying to suck up to…

and

  1. There’s no other legal or ethical or moral reason you shouldn’t be getting involved like that and no workplace policies that would get you or both of you fired…

I would try (as casually as possible):

“Hey I won’t take it personal if the answer is no but you seem really cool, are you interested in getting to know each other outside of work?”

If the answer is no,“Alright! I won’t bring it up again!” And either move on to the next subject or go wherever you were going to go next and just act like it never happened from then on out.

If the answer is yes pick the closest cafe that’s not a chain and is rated at least 3 stars and ask when she’s free. Asker pays for askee but don’t fight her if she wants to pay.

Best of luck.

Apytele,

My fiance is LOVING the quit-go nicotine-free inhaler I got him. It’s designed to mimic the feel of a cigarette as much as possible right down to the shape, lightness, and even the flicking motion. He carries it around the house like a safety blanket; I’m not even sure he knows he does it fits into his muscle memory so well.

Apytele,

Aberration and physiology in this case.

Apytele,

As someone who did have to take A&P for my career I LOVE this! The lung-liver is what’s getting me the most!

Apytele,
Apytele,

Haven’t done his net yet! And not really I’ve been googling as I go myself! I really do recommend stablehorde though. In the midst of complaints about art theft, and the ethics of how the data sets were obtained, it’s important to me that a quality public resource be created and maintained. That cat is already out of its bag, the least we can do at this point is not privatize it.

Apytele,

They’re two data sets with categories that correspond to colors, but it’s hard to fit some things into those categories, and they have slightly different categories, and some have items the other doesn’t.

Apytele,

If you have recurrent anxiety-related chest pain and shortness of breath that has already been evaluated by a professional and conclusively determined to be non-cardiac in origin, here’s how differentiate the two for yourself going forward:

  1. Think about what your panic attacks usually feel like. I’m going to describe some common presentations, but ultimately you need to learn YOUR body and what YOUR panic attacks feel like. If something feels wildly different than usual, go get checked out again.
  2. Anxiety pain is usually stabbing, heart attack pain is usually heavy/crushing. (In women, however, heart attack pain is often jaw pain and indigestion).
  3. Anxiety pain and shortness of breath usually gets better with physical activity and getting your mind off the pain. Heart attack pain gets worse regardless, and extra worse with physical activity. So when in doubt, call or find a trusted friend, and tell them your location and that you’re pretty sure your chest pain is a panic attack, so you’re going to go on a walk or fold laundry or some other light physical activity and want them to shoot the shit with you. They will hopefully help take your mind off things, and if it turns out it is a heart attack, they can call 911.
  4. Make sure you don’t have GERD/indigestion/heartburn, and if you do, get it treated. Turns out that can actually feel exactly like a heart attack even to people who have had both, and it can actually be caused by stress/anxiety. I can’t tell you how many of my psych patients get passed off as simply anxious when their EKG is clear, and it turns out its GERD! Bonus protip: skim milk is the best drink (aside from water) for GERD because the calcium neutralizes the acid, but there’s no fat to be metabolized into more acid.
Apytele,

Sometimes our cat will be nonchalantly licking her paw as the fog approaches and we joke that she’s “readyin’ her bitch-slappin’ paw.”

Apytele,

There’s a YouTube mom who posts a constant stream of low-light ASMR-style videos of her applying dexcom continuous blood glucose monitors to her toddler while she’s asleep and I just feel so icky every time they pop up in my recommendations. All the comments are stuff like “so glad you’re spreading awareness! <3” and whatnot but they really just don’t feel like advocacy videos… she’s opening all the supplies and filming everything the same way people do like unboxing videos and whispering and moving this kid’s clothes out of the way to apply the device and the kid is always sleeping really soundly like not even arousable to painful stimuli (it briefly uses a needle to apply the plastic cannula that goes under the skin) which I guess is possible if she’s really used to it but she never even shifts in her sleep or anything when the mother applies it. I’ve never run the math on how often they actually need to be applied vs how often she does it but she has a LOT of videos of it and they’re her most popular videos: Link

Apytele,

I’m not even sure what I would report it for. Right now all I’ve got is “bad vibes,” I can’t lay my finger on anything concrete.

How might one turn bad faith on its head to help rather than harm?

In thinking on the classic Sartre quote concerning the folly of arguing with anti-Semites as if they’re arguing in good faith, as well as the Swift quote regarding reasoning being unable to correct an ill opinion one didn’t reason themselves into…It’s left me thinking that perhaps a way to alter the path of those astray...

Apytele,

In psychiatry it’s well-known practice to never argue with delusions. Every argument about it gives their brain more and more practice defending that position. Instead, you just change the subject to something completely unrelated but reality-based, ideally something that reinforces their positive/supportive social connections and interactions. So for example they start talking about their family being replaced with lizard people or whatever but you remember you saw them really invested in the game yesterday so you start asking who won, what was the final score, who’s playing next week, do they think that’s a good team, what players do they have this season, etc.

You’re also usually simultaneously trying to get them full of mood stabilizers and antipsychotics to reduce their emotional inflammation enough that they’ll stop seeing and hearing things consistent with the delusions. As long as you can keep the delusions from cementing too much while they’re still psychotic they can usually return to interacting normally once they’re not seeing and hearing weird shit (and other sensory experiences like tactile, olfactory, and somatic hallucinations).

Apytele,

I believe it’s OFADE20K? Whatever StableHorde comes with by default. I mostly use artbot as my gui. And no, those are completely just generated from the controlmaps, no additional img2img or even any photoshopping.

A big part of this project is finding standardized prompts that adequately reference the segmentation categories yet will adapt to the styles I’m applying smoothly. And finding styles that will transfer well to multiple cards!

Apytele,

THIS IS THE ONE I COULDN’T REMEMBER! I was just discussing the sonic one with my partner and was trying to remember this one!

Apytele,

Funny story; the DNR was actually a side choice. The main reason I got the advance directive filled out was to bar my family from trying to regain control of me if I an incapacitated. They’re also barred from visiting, or really even knowing I’m in the hospital. I also added the worst doctor I’ve ever worked with to the FUCK NO list cuz hey, while I’m here…

I literally just went on my state website, printed it off and filled it out, then made a doctors appointment and went over it with the social worker, and got it signed and filed.

Apytele, (edited )

I’m really not sure where I stand on religion or spirituality personally (I suppose the best label is agnostic; It’s mostly just not important to me), but assuming this WAS what atheists believe, it would actually be a pretty fair viewpoint. I wouldn’t shame the child of an actual absent father for thinking this way either; there’s a reason they call them “deadbeats.”

Apytele,

I can tell you as a nurse your body should move and shift in your sleep anyway to avoid wearing holes in your butt, and needing to face a specific direction feels to me like it would interfere with that natural defense mechanism against pressure ulcers.

Apytele,

I’ve told a lot of patients “don’t make that joke to the doctor.” Also depending on the joke I write,“patient able to appropriately use humor to cope with the stresses of hospitalization” in my note to document for future reference that they’re a fucking smartass.

Apytele,

Honest question because I know people often lack the patience for one reason or another but you know they have to be trained to use a scratching post or other designated scratching object right? No shame or pressure but I can give you tips.

Apytele,

That bastard.
