I love genuine questions and people putting in the effort to love and understand each other better. If you come at me just wanting to argue I’m going to troll you back. FAFO.

Cool, but people can do this right now on the toilet while shitting. They can start working on that other stuff when they actually have time. Baby steps here. Also you need third parties running things before you can get that done anyway because democrats won’t do that for the exact same reason they’ll never actually get rid of the Republicans.

Most unique looking celebrities?

I’m working on a side project studying variations in human facial features. It’s been helpful to study celebrity faces because it’s easy to find numerous reference photos. I’ve actually got a fairly good range of weird looking white men, turns out Hollywood is pretty flush with those, but it’s been harder to find...

Apytele,

…the flourosis is caused by too much flouride. I’m saying people are worried about the side effects of too much flouride when they’re pretty much entirely cosmetic anyway. If you’re gonna “um akshully” on the internet at least Google it first.

Apytele,

I keep meaning to. Tbh you’re doing a lot better than me, I usually fizzle out on this kind of thing within a few days.

How should I change my polite behavior to be more accommodating?

My parents raised me to always say “yes sir” and “no ma’am”, and I automatically say it to service workers and just about anyone with whom I’m not close that I interact with. I noticed recently that I had misgendered a cashier when saying something like “no thank you, ma’am” based on their appearing AFAB, but...

Apytele,

I used to specifically work all-male forensics. The intricacies of social structure asking criminally insane men can be somewhat complex, but sir (and now that I work coed sometimes ma’am) goes a lot farther than you’d think. It also helps to start every shift by walking into the dayroom and saying “good evening gentlemen! How’s everybody doing tonight?”

Apytele,

Oh those terms making it into the public consciousness is such a fucking plague. You know how they say magic is just science you can’t understand and that say wizards have secret knowledge? Maybe they’re not hoarding the knowledge, maybe they just hate watching people beat each other half to death with the spine of their favorite spellbook. And I say this as someone who didn’t change my oil for a few years until it lit on fire. I still don’t change my oil, but I do remember to bring it back to the car wizard occasionally. He does it for like $30 because “bitch how the fuck do you still not know how???”

Apytele,

This is a really good example of the specific vibe I was going for. A good next question would be: “what is a good thing in your niche industry or hobby that most outsiders would consider a bad thing?”

The increasing distrust many Americans have in modern medical advances is probably mostly due to our failing Healthcare system.

It’s easy not to trust a system associated with charging you $500 for Tylenol. Much easier (and occasionally even safer) to just smell some lavender and hope that helps. Go to an ED and you could just die of a stroke or heart attack in the waiting room or even get run over by somebody who died of a heart attack while driving...

Apytele,

Guess who’s also tanking the Healthcare system and who’s letting them.

We made a fake “stool sample” with a little dollhouse stool in a specimen cup for the lab for April 1st this year with a fake specimen label and everything. The barcode was a rickroll, and we named the fake patient “Lee King.”

Apytele,

That meme has been in my gallery waiting for its moment for a long time now!

I feel like this would be a really great basis for a forum-based RPG. (rowanrookanddecard.com)

I really miss old roleplaying forums where instead of being more “gamelike” you would more write a story together and the rules were more of a self governing expectation that people wouldn’t try to take over a story for themselves (which didn’t always work as intended). I remember being on one’s for everything from...

Apytele,

I don’t think so, because as stated in the post, I can still view posts older than 9 months from other subs from this server.

Apytele,

Alternatively, they’re arguing that there’s better ways to try to stop slavery than depriving yourself, and simply paying more for something is inadequate. You may as well just buy the thing cheaper then focus on fighting for overall social change. The amount you pay for the object does not free those slaves, but you giving less of it to Nike’s CEO might help you conserve enough for yourself to give you better footing while fighting for those social changes

Now, I’m also interested to see how the actual math works out as to the labor and materials costs and whether or not various companies directly or indirectly utilize slave labor, and which systems really do ultimately deliver the most worker friendly conditions. I’m not sure how I would get that info or how to know who to trust (medical journals are the academic text I’m used to parsing ). But the philosophical argument itself has a lot more to it than “fuck them slaves.”

Apytele,

I was subscribed already; still doesn’t seem to be working yet thank you for trying and I’ll let you know if it does start working.

US residents: What big domestic policy improvements have the american people won from congress in the last 30 years?

Interpret improvements as you like. For me it's any large scale reforms or legislative packages designed to improve the country for all or see to the material interests of the majority without overly benefiting the elite....

Apytele,

One time my parents tried to tell me they shouldn’t have to pay for insulin for “fat people” and the nurse educator in me went on a fifteen minute rant about how insulin dependent diabetics are actually the ones who get it genetically in childhood and finished the rant by asking why they’re advocating for the deaths of impoverished children. Not that fat people deserve to die or be sick either but come ON if you’re not willing to do the research yourself then just listen to what the experts say? Everybody in America these days wants to do 0 research and just walk out into the world to convince people that lavender oil will cure their cancer.

Please please please go on www.stuffthatworks.health and rate ALL of the treatments listed for any disorders you have. It’s a patient-reprted knowledge base for both patients to help each other and so providers can gain a more in-depth perspective of patient experience. The experiences of someone who has tried as many treatments as you will be INVALUABLE to that community. Edit: fixed the link.

what is a skill you wish you had, and why?

Ok, I might as well go first: I wish I could draw. Not at the level where I could make photorealistic portraits, but I’ve always been envious of those who are able to scetch something together in a few minutes that perfectly captures what they want to convey. Sometimes words aren’t enough to express what I want to say, and...

Remembering names and faces. I’ve got a huuuuuuge variety of valuable knowledge and skills and I’m ALWAYS getting tripped up on people’s names. I’ve jumped between a physical aggressor and their victim before (I work in that kind of field) for coworkers whose names I cannot remember. What the fuck is wrong with me? My brain isn’t even any bigger than anyone else’s it’s just stuffed with knowing how to spell and pronounce N-acetylcysteine instead of anything actually useful.

Apytele,

yes in that it’s a diuretic, no in that it’s not actually good for your kidneys. But now that you mention it…

Apytele,

Things didn’t work out with Angela apparently.
