@Zumbador @actuallyautistic this is such a relatable experience. I've been supporting someone who is suspecting a neurodivergence & they made a 20 slide presentation detailing just how certain things affect them & how they relate to a certain condition. I was so proud of them & joked this should be a diagnostic criteria.
I remember my own pages and pages of childhood and adulthood experiences that I collected when I was in the process of getting assessed.

AutisticDoctorStruggles,
@AutisticDoctorStruggles@mas.to avatar

@Zumbador @actuallyautistic and I absolutely agree with you that especially afab people and marginalized groups have been ignored and or misdiagnosed and harmed by the so-called professionals.
My own experience is proof of this as well. I would have continued to suffer in silence if I hadn't started to research autism & at times I felt like I had to educate the psychologist and clinical psychiatrist I saw. Which is bizarre given the amount of effort & money I had to put in for formal diagnosis.

@yourautisticlife @autism101 @actuallyautistic for me the biggest impact on sleep is stress &closure. If too many things are still unfinished/unsolved etc. I have anxiety & my brain tries to solve everything. Which often gives me trouble falling asleep and more often waking me up way too early. It helps if I give myself about 1 h before bed to "chill down". Reduce sensory input, play some low intensity game on my switch (enough to keep my brain from ruminating but not excite me)then fall asleep.

@yourautisticlife @actuallyautistic there were some really good answers here, especially Alice got a comprehensive list and I also added the page for monotropism.

@alexisbushnell @actuallyautistic that is definitely a sign! A huge one with arrows and neon lights.

Does anyone else have sensory issues washing their face?

I’m trying the curology acne treatment because my face has bad acne lately. It comes with a cleanser that you must use 2x daily. Washing my face feels like sensory torture. I’m doing it anyways. Not washing my face or using cleansing wipes is probably what caused the acne.

I was put in swimming lessons for years as a kid but I refused to learn because I didn’t like the feeling of the water on my face.

Relate?

@ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic I always loved the water and I like the sensory experience of showering and washing my face/hair. However that is often driven by the sensory ick I get from sweating. I also have trouble forming routines. Took me years to reliably moisturise my face after showering/washing it.

Oufff... I think I'm in bad shape today. Certainly the near-meltdown from Saturday didn't help. I also tried out at a singing ensemble yesterday & unfortunately not at all what I expected.. high-masking 2 hours of practice plus packed public transport there & back. Then the bad night's sleep I feel very dysregulated & close to tears.
I've seen 7 doggos on my way to work at least.

@devxvda yepp. It's usually enough to make me feel very crappy, especially if I have a day planned that needs to work out & get stuff done in order to help with some of my anxiety like today

I bought stuff for more "figuring stuff out"...

PS. Online "grocery" ordering is nice for buying such things compared to having to do it in person (which I rationally know is "silly", but...).

AutisticDoctorStruggles,
@AutisticDoctorStruggles@mas.to avatar

@IzabelaKaramia @samantha I second this! But I get you also have other reasons to make these choices ☺️

I’ve been playing a few new games this week!

For the People: Loving it so far! Solid 8/10 - A Soviet themed visual novel about corruption and politics.

Darkest Dungeon: An hour in and I’m hooked! The art style and challenging turn based combat is irresistible. 9/10, easy.

Journey to the Savage Planet: Very silly No Man’s Sky like space planetary exploration game. Not really my style but it’s at least chill, 7/10.

How were your gaming adventures this week?

AutisticDoctorStruggles,

@britt

Nice!!

We got completely sucked into Vampire Survivor, chasing that dopamine 😁 10/10 so far!

As an person, when I face street harassment and racist attacks (like I have several times recently), I have a big disconnect between my mind and my body, which already isn’t very much in touch with each other. I don’t typically feel angry, not until hours or sometimes weeks later. I only feel strong and immediate emotions relating to abstract ideas. There’s injustice in the world? Immediately mad. Someone is doing or saying something horrible to me? No idea.

AutisticDoctorStruggles,
@AutisticDoctorStruggles@mas.to avatar

@skinnylatte same! Also happens to me when unfairly treated. I need way too long to process, to have an appropriate and immediate response!

Listening to a podcast, thinking that I keep hearing about how a higher percentage of the community are LGBT+ when compared to the general population & I wonder if there's a similar correlation between being & ?

AutisticDoctorStruggles,
@AutisticDoctorStruggles@mas.to avatar

@NudelnAlDente I haven't seen any hard evidence on it, but also wouldn't be surprised if there was. I'm childfree, too.
There are a lot of factors that could play a part. Sensory aspects of birthing/being a parent, time & energy constraints, economic limits (based on un- or underemployment), less likely to be influenced by the child norm, being consumed & satisfied by special interests, higher rates of asexuality, moral concerns about the state of the world...

I noticed this morning… Dinah hasn’t thrown up once and we’re on day 4. Normally she throws up every day, sometimes multiple times a day no matter what I feed her. Vets could never find a reason why she threw up because there was nothing wrong with her. Same with Nikita’s ear scratching. It’s completely gone. So is her obsession with food.

Never knew cats could develop medical issues from stress, and that it would all go away once they are in good living conditions and happy. Just like people.

AutisticDoctorStruggles,
@AutisticDoctorStruggles@mas.to avatar

Ooohhiii... Setting boundaries and saying no is tough. A relative of SO asked if I could do a crochet project for them and like.. no. I don't want to do the things I do for fun to be a job...
I explained exactly that but I felt such a hurdle.

AutisticDoctorStruggles,
@AutisticDoctorStruggles@mas.to avatar

@IzabelaKaramia thing is in the end they don't actually need to (fully) understand the why, they need to respect that it is the reason for you.
It helps if they understand but the 'why' needs to make sense to you and you alone. I often feel the need to explain too though... But want to do it less. People need to learn how to accept and respect a no, and we need to stop managing others emotions about that. (Okay that last part I'm telling myself.)
