Listening to the radio this morning talking about the one (1) commercial jetliner that had a problem with a door plug blowing out mid-flight has led me to dwell on the tendency of humans -- exacerbated by the systems we have created -- to dwell on acute dangers whilst downplaying chronic ones.

Obviously, driving to the airport is far, far more dangerous than getting on a commercial airplane (and powerful people have made Choices to make that the case). See also: public health, white supremacy, capitalism, etc etc etc

There's a flipside to this, though: you can call attention to chronic problems by creating acute ones. This is what strategy for social change, should be, if it weren't all diluted/recuperated/resigned into peaceful protest and begging for scraps. That's what 2020 felt like.

Resolve to create more acute problems this year.

AvengingFemme,

@riotmuffin i’ve been thinking about risk assessment and humans lately because of COVID and it seems to me that most humans can only think about risk as 0% or 100%. either the Bad Thing WILL happen, or it won’t, and there’s no in-between. chronic risks like car accidents and getting Long Covid seem to be rounded down to zero by most people, and rounded up to inevitable by a few. though it varies from topic to topic; it’s entirely possible for someone to round long covid risk to zero and airplane crash death to one.

connecting to the 737 Max 9 news, it seems like a lot of people started rounding commercial aviation risk to one because the only salient bit of information on their minds is that one incident.

god i wish i knew how to convince people that the risk of long covid, or climate collapse, or fascism, were one rather than zero.

Sophie From Mars has been credibly accused of physically abusing other trans women during sexual encounters and kink scenes. the victims are not asking for any specific reaction, keep watching her videos if you want, but you should be aware that the person who makes them also puts out cigarettes on other people’s skin without their consent.

just saw someone on Twitter say that growing food in orbital habitats is a good idea because there are no space constraints or climate concerns and i just cannot comprehend how anyone can be that misguided.

look, i love spaceflight, i’m a transhumanist anarchist, i get the dream, but if you think putting something in orbit means it has fewer constraints than doing the same thing on Earth you are deranged. or, like, 9 years old.

there are plenty of Earthly deserts more accessible and hospitable than fucking orbit. greenhouses on the South Pole are a more pragmatic agricultural habitat than on orbit!

some people experience something horrible, and think, “it is not right that this was done, no one should suffer this way”.

other people experience something horrible, and think, “it is not right that this was done to me, no one like me should suffer this way”.

only the former reaction can be the foundation of a pursuit of liberation. the latter reaction only supports refiguring domination for the benefit of “people like me”.

best analysis i’ve ever read about the supposed crisis of loneliness and emotional repression among cis men.

“Cis men are not only allowed but encouraged to express any and all emotions under patriarchy. What they are actually discouraged from doing is expressing emotions in ways that do not serve to differentiate them from women and other marginalized genders. Cis men can be angry, just not in the way women are angry. They can be sad and even cry, but just not in the way queers do. They are encouraged to have and express emotions by patriarchy, but only in ways that refer to that system of power.”

you ever think about how title to property, particularly "real property" aka land, are really just official permission slips to call the cops on people if they do something you don't like on/around the survey boundaries on the plat?

like, "i own this land" just means "i can call on a violent bureaucracy whenever i want to enforce my sole occupancy on this land"

"owning land" is kind of fucked up when you think of it like that

i don’t watch Second Thought much but has he always been doing soft Stalin apologism? seems bad for a leftuber with over a million subscriber to be rehabilitating Stalin!

AvengingFemme,

@rose yeah i just watched it and it’s like a highlight reel of bad tankie arguments, down to citing “On Authority”, claiming not to be a tankie, and pretending anarchists and anti-authoritarians only exist in the West, while the US is somehow both the most ruthlessly repressive regime on the planet AND those of us who live here are naive and “not under the boot”.

real “throw my phone out a window” shit.

When we have a doggy playdate we are studious about not mentioning any words that could be associated, because the doggo is very smart and will immediately sit by the door and whine for hours until her friends arrive.

I just offhandedly said "you'll have a good night tonight" to her (a phrasing I've never used before) and she immediately cocked her head, opened her eyes real wide and then ran over to the front door.

This dog is so wicked smart.

AvengingFemme,

apropos of the current Twitter discourse re: Wikipedia donations, reminder that neither Wikipedia nor Signal actually need your money, it just goes to outsized salaries. this is true of probably all organizations of that size. if you want to give money to nonprofits, give it to tiny ones working on weird stuff you care about. i guarantee the big ones are just padding their expense accounts with your money.

"markets are the best way to organize a technical society" says man whose business model relies on people creating spaces where defacto monopolies rule via intellectual property

    AvengingFemme,

@mutual_ayyde being a market anarchist is exhausting because nobody except market anarchists used the term in a “bare” sense, everyone else assumes state-controlled, monopoly-enabling shit. even though we all know markets existed for millennia before capitalism or mercantilism did.

About that last RT: I think this is the first ever use of a laser anti-missile weapon in combat. The implications for future conflicts are immense as it shifts the offense/defense slider a long way back towards defense (war fighting has been dominated by offensive technologies since 1918: a tool for reliably zapping artillery shells and missiles in flight will be a game-changer).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Beam

    AvengingFemme,

@cstross a good defense just enables even better offense. there really is no useful distinction between offensive and defensive in war or combat, which is why for instance some places ban civilian use of body armor: being harder to kill is isomorphic to being able to kill others easier, because the biggest thing that stops a killer is being killed (or the threat of it).

with massively better defenses, Israel will not, for instance, sit pretty and leave Gaza alone. they will simply push their settlements closer and denser around and into Gaza, knowing they cannot be hurt by missile attacks.

(Military Power by Biddle expands at length on this, and on why the technology-favors-offense theory of 20th century war outcomes is inadequate)

there was a weird bit of discourse on twitter about “what would you, a white American, do if an Indigenous group rebelled” and the two responses allowed by the narrative were “i would do a genocide” and “i would happily let myself be merked”, ignoring the one actually good response: i would be providing them with material support so long as their aims and means were truly liberatory, and opposing them in addition to the state to the extent that they were not.

hell of a false dichotomy that implicitly supports genocidal behavior either way and like 90% of Twitter leftists fell for it.

stop understanding yourself as an oppressor and start believing you can help liberate yourself and others!

you can provide material support to existing indigenous rebellions RIGHT NOW! why are you instead engaging in maliciously framed debates about how to react as the oppressor??

    AvengingFemme,

@pl i tend to think of rebellion in insurrectionary anarchist terms, and i happen to think most people would benefit from doing so as well :)

thinking there is a fundamental difference between "resistance" and "rebellion" and that "rebellion" requires clearly delineated armed groups doing overt violence is how you get leftists supporting Hamas because "they're the only viable option".
