Good good. We’re relearning things we figured out pretty definitively back in the 60s

Mr Rogers testifying before congress

This isn’t what I thought living in the future was going to be like.

GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville parroted Russian propaganda on Fox News while continuing to hold up US military preparedness (www.businessinsider.com)

Tommy Tuberville — the Alabama GOP senator who has single-handedly held up hundreds of Defense Department promotions over its abortion policy, impacting US military readiness — has parroted Russian propaganda by insisting Ukraine “can’t win” the war against Moscow....

McConnell is now unreliable and Graham is paralyzed with fear he’s about to be indicted or named in Georgia. Putin’s running out of good mouthpieces still on the payroll. Tuberville doesn’t seem to mind that his blocking of promotions just cost Alabama the Space Command headquarters and ceded a lot more military control to the executive branch. Hopefully his constituents will.

Edit: spelling

So by keeping all my google history’s off I now get the simple search UI I’ve missed since Melissa Meyer left (albeit on Youtube instead of Google search)? Can I sign up get this rolled to my account faster please?

Community Points are the first step towards a better future for online communities. In order to be truly independent from platforms like Reddit, communities need to be owned by their members in ways that platforms cannot take away. With the advent of blockchain technology, we now have a way to establish this freedom in a decentralized and secure way.

The way to be independent of Reddit is by having a token on a blockchain maintained by Reddit?

What are your favourite small, but active communities on Lemmy?

I’ve browsed a bunch of recent threads about more niche communities which people are hoping to grow. Which is awesome, and I’ve subscribed to a bunch of them… with the result that I now still barely have new content in my feed, because most are at only a few new posts a month....

It’s been a relief that !3dprinting is nice and active as it’s one of my main hobbies. !functionalprint seems to be growing nicely too.

It’s also been surprising but delightful that there are active degoogler’s in the Fediverse !degoogle

I added XT60 connectors to the middle of my hotend and heated bed cables, plus a JST in the middle of the power panic wire so it’s quick to connect and disconnect.

The XT60s are way overkill in terms of the current they can handle vs what the printer puts out, but I trust them to stay firmly connected and they’re really easy to solder… and I had a bag of them.

Mitch McConnell is barely with it and Lindsey Graham is paralyzed by fear of getting named in Georgia’s case against Trump, so Putin has had to put his 3rd string on the field.

Did the "American dream" change over time, or was it just my interpretation of it?

So growing up, I had this idea that the American dream was about that if you put in an honest amount of work, you would be rewarded with a good life. This would mean you would be able to take care of yourself and your family, afford a car and a house. In my view, working one job would probably be enough....

The American dream has been slipping out of reach gradually since the 80s, but people just keep hoping real hard about it; poll done about a year ago shows that close to half of Americans think they’ll be billionaires one day.

Edit: The poll more accurately says nearly half of Americans think it’s possible they’ll be billionaires. Which is, for all practical purposes, no less wrong.

Bishma,
@Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Which is more true by the year. Economic policy in the US and (to a slower extent) Europe has been shifting toward letting the rich horde wealth and away from new wealth being created, again since the 80s.

That explains all the writers for popular TV, movies, and book series who are living in quads eating ramen in the their 30s. The reason there’s massive a doctors shortage is because people with money don’t want to go into a low paying position, and people without money can’t afford to make $30k year during their residency as their student loans go into repayment. The only way to become rich as a doctor now is to patent something, which is not why most people become doctors. Lawyers who make top sums all come from 16ish very expensive schools and are often legacies. And the gold rush of getting into tech companies and then falling into success is almost entirely over. If you’re not born wealthy there are fewer opportunities every day to change that.

PremiumCord USB 3.0 extender cable Desk Mount by Krasovna (www.thingiverse.com)

This design has been updated with AUX port. You can find this new design at: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5767765 My PC has USB 3.0 ports only from its back (yes, it is already getting mature). I wanted to bring some of these to my desk to avoid having to 'deep dive' every time I need to connect something reasonably fast...

Bishma,

If I could I’d give another upvote for including the aux jack option.

That’s good, but as long as Chrome has 2/3rds of the browser market share, it doesn’t really matter what other browsers do.

At this point I think the thing most likely to derail WEI are the US Congress and the EU. Google is flirting with getting forced to split-up like AT&T and this may be the last straw. They may decide it’s not worth the extra attention from law makers to move forward with it.

So he says he needs a secure room to review the discovery documents about the charges that he was storing documents insecurely? So he’s admitting all those boxes he took weren’t being stored securely?

Great, he changed his plea to guilty. Lets get to sentencing.

Google Gmail continuously nagging to enable Enhanced Safe Browsing (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

The difference between the two security features is that Safe Browsing will compare a visited site to a locally stored list of domains, compared to Enhanced Safe Browser, which will check if a site is malicious in real-time against Google’s cloud services....

I don’t think anyone is really going to substantively crack down on a Chinese media company unless it can fit into whatever culture wars are currently afoot in your country… or maybe if China invades Taiwan. But thankfully the enshitification of TikTok is well underway so maybe you won’t have to worry about it much longer.

Yeah, but there have already been 2 rounds of creator exoduses and engagement is down, which ups the likelihood of more creators leaving. It’s starting to Tumblr.

And the time for that was before we hot record ocean temps killing off all of florida’s coral. Things are accelerating past the point we could have done anything. Any time now the antarctic ice sheet is going to calve into the southern ocean which, on its own will lead to nearly a meter of ocean level rise - this is now a sure thing. The time to act like we did on the ozone layer was probably some time in the 90s.
