Since Word documents are one of your bigger concerns, you can download LibreOffice on one of your current machines and try them out. That’s the same program you’d be using on Linux.
It’d have to be a pretty unusual video format to have issues. Similar to above, you can try VLC on Windows and see if there’s any issues.
Based on your description, I’d be surprised if you encountered any major issues. I’d recommend trying either Pop! OS if you’re OK with a slightly different UI from Windows, or Mint if you want something more comfortable. Note that you can create a LiveUSB stick of either of those, or any other distro. You can then boot your computer from it and take it for a spin to see if there’s any obvious issues.
VLC is the sort of software where if it can’t play it, I don’t know what else could. I guess I’d also try the ffmpeg command line tool to see if it can figure out what the video file even is, and maybe it could convert it to a regular format.
Also TBH such a video file would be interesting enough that you could probably post it here (if possible, or any metadata you can extract from it) and see if anyone knows how to play it.
I realize we’re probably not going to convince each other over some internet comments, but that’s not a philosophy I’d sign up for. Morality is subjective, and I’d rather choose moral principles that don’t involve me accepting being massacred.
Jason Richardson - Sparrow - Saw him on the Babyklok tour, was pretty cool. IMO he really needs a band to tour with though. I’ve seen other concerts as well with just live guitar and everything else recorded and it’s not really the same
Yeah, Nick Schendzielos is the bassist for both of them. Honestly surprised he’s got the time since he’s also in some other bands too like Cephalic Carnage.
I’m in California and I’ve been looking at some options from VW, Mini Cooper, Chevy, though a lot of these options are kinda pricey when my budget is 15k, maybe 20k max. Any options you guys have for a good quality car within that price range that can drive maybe 200 miles. I’m probably asking for a lot here 😅.
You might be able to find a used Leaf in that price range. I’ve got one from 2019 with 230 mile range. New, it was $31k after the tax credit so that’d be right out, unless you can find a really good deal from dealers wanting to move inventory with the Leaf being discontinued.
Quality’s been pretty good overall. There was an issue with the distance sensor that was covered under warranty, and a few minor things like a speaker buzzing that the dealer also fixed. Other than that it’s been rock solid, so if you can find a used one, it should still work great.
Other creative toys/products that come to mind would be, say, Play-Doh as a sort of children’s intro to…Clay, I suppose? But in this vein without being exclusively directed towards children (albeit I imagine many may be)....

Oh neat. Development had died down, but looks like it’s picking back up again and the creator is finding more maintainers. It’s what I use on my phone.
I recently checked out BAR and liked it. I don’t like micro in RTS games, because I always think “a computer can do this better than I could”, so it’s nice that they’ve got good unit automations available.
It just means having to micromanage a particular unit’s actions. I like it more when I can say “patrol this area, return fire and advance a bit if necessary, but no further than this”, instead of having to flip back to those units constantly to manage them. IMO it’s more thematic anyways for a sci fi game, you’re probably going to have units with a basic AI in them in-universe.
Johnson’s ultimate goal is to bring a drug that inhibits fructose metabolism to market. He’s working on formulating and testing one now, and hopes that his efforts will bear fruit in the next five years or so.
That’s… not a good idea. Why don’t we just focus on not having people eat trash food in the first place? That approach is like the They Feed Us Poison meme, but unironic.
Also, here’s a related chart that recent had some HN discussion:
I constantly see people bickering about this online, but that’s not at odds with CICO. Yes, the overarching limits is CICO, but most people don’t track calories. Fructose makes you more hungry and so you eat more food, and therefore CICO means you gain weight. From the article:
When these cellular powerhouses are slowed, the cells get stuck in a low-energy state, triggering hunger and thirst
So you’re correct, but it’s an unhelpful response. Kind of like saying “No, the Earth still isn’t flat” when people are trying to figure out exactly how round it is.
EDIT: To your other comment:
At no point is fructose a direct cause of obesity, a byproduct yes.
“direct cause” is the wrong way to look at this. Even if the mechanism by which it acts doesn’t cause obesity itself, it can be a root cause if, without it, people wouldn’t engage in behaviors that lead to obesity, i.e. overeating. The difference between “he died because he ran into a tree” vs “he died because he was texting and not paying attention”.
Yes, but also weights aren’t like code. We could use a new term maybe, but legally-unencumbered weights are in the same spirit as open source code IMO.
I guess what would you like to see instead? Keeping in mind that although things are looking good legally, it’s still enough of a gray area that people are avoiding talking about what data sources their models were trained on
Good. Generative AI gets people riled out of fear, but the tech is here to stay. The only way we can minimize its harms are to democratize it as much as possible, and open models are an important part of that. Stop trying to put the genie back in the bottle, and give everyone a bottle instead.
Are there any ways to contribute to FOSS developers other than paying? I would really like to help/contribute but unfortunately have no regular income so no way to do so monetarily.
But personally I’ll continue to advocate for technology which empowers people and culture, and not the other way around.
You won’t achieve this goal by aiding the gatekeepers. Stop helping them by trying to misapply copyright.
Any experienced programmer knows that GPL code is still subject to copyright […]
GPL is a clever hack of a bad system. It would be better if copyright didn’t exist, and I say that as someone that writes AGPL code.
I think you misunderstood what I meant. We should drop copyright, and pass a new law where if you use a model, or contribute to one, or a model is used against you, that model must be made available to you. Similar in spirit to the GPL, but not a reliant on an outdated system.
This would catch so many more use cases than trying to cram copyright where it doesn’t apply. No more:
Handful of already-rich companies building an AI moat that keeps newcomers out
Credit agencies assigning you a black box score that affects your entire life
Minorities being denied bail because of a black box model
Being put on a no-fly list with no way to know that you’re on it or why
Facebook experimenting on you to see if they can make you sad without your knowledge
