Finally played through Shadow of the Tomb Raider, after being in my todo queue for years. There's a lot to be said for a ~14 hour game in today's world. Even though it's the finale of a trilogy, didn't really reference anything from the previous games, so works great standalone. It felt like a much more focused, thrilling Uncharted 4. And still very much looks the part

@stroughtonsmith I always wanted to try those new Tomb Raider games, but an early review I was watching on your tube showed Laura get caught in some trap and a sharpened stick poked through her and her death animation was her body thrashing against the thing impaling her, it was visceral and brutal - little too real for me. Supposed to be really great games though, let us know if you enjoy it.

For all the hype about AI, it's disappointing that spam is still a huge problem. You'd think intelligent algorithms could figure this one out. AI can apparently write poetry, make videos, draw pictures, and beat chess masters, but we still get bombarded with spam emails and scammy social media posts.

@nixCraft I have thoughts on this. I’m lucky, in my life I’ve worked several different industries in several roles each. “AI” seems to my eyes to just be a new form of automation. Automation is fine, but the basic premise seems to be you’ll automate past user stupidity. This will never happen, no matter how smart the system, nature will create a better idiot. All we are doing at this point is making the price point to create these systems unreasonable. Train users, save money, no AI.

@nixCraft the only games I’ve had not work on Linux are ark online, kerbel space program 2, space station 13, and RuneScape. I’m not sure I’ve had a AAA give me trouble recently. Currently enjoying BG3, Palworld, and Cities Skylines 2.

The whole DMA situation should have been Apple's cue to take stock of the App Store and how it has failed iPad & Mac. That a tablet or desktop should have the same rules and restrictions as a phone is bonkers. There’s a reason why most of the Mac apps you care about aren't on the App Store, and why Apple still offers a bunch of temporary entitlement exemptions a decade later — the App Store cannot support the richness of a platform like the Mac. Vision is destined to the same fate as iPad

@stroughtonsmith I wasnt aware you could get Apps not on the App store. I guess it makes sense, but I've never needed one. I kinda like the iPad, i can watch YouTube on it, check my email, do some light browsing on the internet, and it's more convenient than a laptop. Surely I'm not the only person who fails to see a problem here.
Then again my iPad was free and I find a 500 dollar price tag laughable, I'd do without if I had to pay for it.

@nixCraft I did something similar. They asked me what I saw myself doing in 5 years - told them I'm living the dream, if I'm doing this is in5 years, then, great.

That job went downhill from there. Apparently they were interested in a more ambitious class of employee. Meh. Some people want to change the world, some of us just raise an eyebrow in concern when someone wants to change the world.
