Google Maps is hallucinating again!

https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=london%20%22ancient%20metal%20vault%22

Apparently there's an ancient metal vault in Central London. No other maps seem to know about it.

Perhaps the start of a new game?

My personal crusade against the "minimized keyboard accessory" control for iPadOS continues.

Today's example: I wanted to create a new folder in the Notes app, but I couldn't because that thing was covering the button. 😡

@viticci I regularly wrestle with this in Ulysses, where it is expanded with extra icons. It often floats in the middle of the screen, but slightly resizing the (stage manager) window puts it down into its favoured position at the bottom where it blocks even more of the UI.

Anyone got a recommendation for a good USB-C dock / hub?

I'm looking for something which has multiple USB-C ports.

Found stuff like this for £40 on eBay - but no reviews anywhere to be found.

CTD,
@CTD@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent I sprung for the CalDigit TS4 which is (a) probably overkill and (b) actually a Thunderbolt dock so I don’t know why I am continuing to type this out. Perhaps it doubles as USB-C dock too. Also stupidly expensive.

Apple Arcade PR in. Some nice additions coming. Ridiculous Fishing EX is a ground-up rewrite from Vlambeer of the indie’s wonderful arcade game. And Stardew Valley is getting the ‘+’ treatment, which is sure to please RPG fans.

(Quite why some people are so cool on Apple Arcade, I don’t know. It isn’t packed with AAA titles, but it doesn’t need to be Xbox Game Pass. We… already have Xbox Game Pass. As its own thing, aimed at a wider market, it has a lot of great titles to explore.)

What have Streaks for iPhone by @qzervaas and Eugene Jarvis’s 1980s arcade classic Defender got in common? They both understand the concept of recovery – something Apple and others should learn themselves, to stop folks becoming demoralised due to robotic and inflexible streaks systems.

I dig into this in this week’s column for Stuff: https://www.stuff.tv/features/i-lost-my-streak-and-now-want-apple-watch-to-find-some-humanity/

@craiggrannell @qzervaas I’ve been experimenting with the Gentler Streak app that encourages you to take a more balanced approach. Still keeping up my streak in Apple while I can even though it broke when I missed a day flying to New Zealand. The date line is unforgiving

I admit the last time I went to the UK was pre-pandemic

But I today looked at London-Paris Eurostar prices for Friday 8 September

OMG

€250 per person, single, second class. This far ahead. On any train in the morning. And Interrail reservations (€30) on just a handful of services available that day, one of which I bought

I don't know what Interrail pass I will have then, but I can decide that later…

CTD,
@CTD@mastodon.social avatar

@jon Eurostar prices are weird. I regularly travel London to Amsterdam (and back of course) and they vary wildly in price. I would have expected September prices to be much lower though.

I found an excuse to write about Tears of the Kingdom on @macstories 😄

If you're playing the game and taking notes, you have to try the TotK Travel Guide app by @jeffreykuiken. Great UI inspired by Apple Maps with a built-in note-taking system for locations in the game. Syncs with iCloud, has a single $4 In-App Purchase, and it supports the 3 different maps of the game. I love this.

My review: https://www.macstories.net/reviews/totk-travel-guide/

@viticci @macstories @jeffreykuiken this is so well done, but I am at 170 hours in now and I think it would take almost that time again to bring it up to date! Maybe the Heroes Path could be exported to the app…

At US Embassy in London getting an emergency passport for one of our kids (they were taking great care, and we're baffled at what point it disappeared) and the staff has all been incredibly helpful and the process absolutely straightforward. We will likely be in and out in an hour total. Tip! They have two self-service passport photo booths here! Tip! Get the earliest appointment you can because they get backed up as the day goes along.

Do I want an e-bike?

I don't think I neeeed an e-bike.

But I think a low powered one might be helpful for when I'd actually like to ride a bike somewhere a little further away but not get super sweaty on the way. Or, for comfortably taking the kids in the trailer to the less local playgrounds, that are just that bit too far for them to ride to on their own bikes.

My office has a shower, but planning the extra time for that into my day is just a bit much, and I feel hot and bothered for ages.

CTD,
@CTD@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw I cycle 15km on mine to the office and don’t need shower or change of clothes (except in thunderstorms). Use it to get groceries with trailer. Reduced my car and public transport use by about 90%. Best purchase ever.

CTD,
@CTD@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw @zimpenfish yeah. I bought bike cover and other stuff to chain it up outside but it’s never left the front hall. Easier to charge there!

On the cost of custom Zeiss prescription lenses for Apple Vision Pro: @markgurman speculates $300-$600 a pair.

My hope is that Apple opens the door for 3rd party lenses, since I can get custom lenses on-line for under $50/pair. Not as optically pure? Not the right shape? 🤔

Version 3.5 of Retrospecs should be wending its way into the App Store over the next few hours.

In addition to some new app icons, this version removes the “source media or system proportions” option from settings. Instead you can now choose the aspect ratio to use within the crop tool. (It’ll use your selection as the default until you change it.)

Hope you all enjoy!

Game Review: Day of the Tentacle - Remastered

The past is another country to which you can never return.

It is a million years ago, and my brother and I have just spent all of our pocket money (and a good deal of next year's) on a state-of-the-art PENTIUM 75 desktop. With 200MB of hard drive space, and more RAM than we'd ever seen (8MB), it was a beast. We chose it because it came w
