Speaker Mike Johnson faces critical decision on Ukraine aid as international pressure grows to act (www.cnn.com)

Speaker Mike Johnson is facing international criticism over his lack of swift action on Ukraine aid, which is ratcheting up pressure to make a critical decision that will not only have massive implications for his rookie speakership but also for Ukraine’s ongoing war effort against Russia....

Candelestine,

“no rush” to address the issue

Brave Ukrainians, that didn’t have to, are dying.

Candelestine,

They don’t need evidence when they have their “gut instincts”.

YSK: How Lemmy Works

Why YSK: Because intuitive explanations are few and far between, and the technical explanations often present too many "trees" and not enough "forest", which is just how technically-minded people are trained to approach things. Forests are, after all, made of trees, and it's not their fault we don't care about individual...

Candelestine,

How do you know a country isn’t run by corrupt people all the way through? They exhibit transparency, when a mistake is made, they can admit it, talk about the details and even try to address the problem.

What I Learned When I Read 887 Pages of Plans for Trump’s Second Term (www.nytimes.com)

Portions of “Mandate for Leadership” read as though the authors did a Control-F search of the executive branch for any terms they deemed suspect and then deleted the offending programs or offices. The White House’s Gender Policy Council must go, along with its Office of Domestic Climate Policy. The Department of Energy’s...

Candelestine,

That’s uh … basically a playbook for implementing Orwell’s 1984. About 40 years late I guess?

Candelestine,

Foolishness in the digital world has less disuasive power than irl. Flips the script a little bit, which is why people are willing to invest in it as a tool of actual power. Qanon demonstrated this. Now kids are getting measles.

Candelestine,

If someone can’t see how our world can get this messed up without some shadowy cabal of global controllers, they’re a simpleton.

The world is not a tv show plotline.

Candelestine,

At least be honest. You don’t want a functional president, you want a left-leaning one. That’s fine, but at least represent yourself accurately. Otherwise you’re just acting with the same childishness as the guys on the other side of the aisle.

From a pure functionality perspective, he’s gotten a shitload done. Even if you don’t agree with it all, like helping Netanyahu and such.

Commander: Russia stops using 'human wave' attacks in Avdiivka, instead deploys small assault groups (kyivindependent.com)

Russia has stopped using its infamous "human wave" attacks in Avdiivka, instead deploying small assault groups supported by aviation to probe Ukrainian defenses, Dmytro Riumshyn, the commander of Ukraine's 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade, said in an interview published on Feb. 12.

Candelestine,

Imagine they’re likely reconstituting forces for renewed assaults in the future. Aviation seems to be what they lean on when they have no other easy alternatives to achieve current objectives. The aviation attrition hurts though, and that’s before the f-16s and Gripens show up.

Candelestine,

Don’t underestimate the backlash. The big, mellower, center segment of the population that is generally more chill isn’t in favor of fascist idiots.

Just, do what you can to help maintain motivation in the face of the fascist fear-train. Fear is their #1 tool, it’s the emotion that underpins their whole worldview. Control is simply a response to that fear. Without that underlying current of fear, though, how do they get people to grant them control?

Candelestine,

Every time we get a wave of fresh influx, it seems to bring a fair number of upset people here. I’m not particularly surprised, they’re coming from a less-pleasant environment just in general.

People do seem to settle down a little bit after they get some time to unwind from that all, though.

Candelestine,

There’s a shitload of selection bias at play there. When we do prepare for something and actually successfully prevent it, your brain won’t remember it for you, unless you try really hard.

So, it’s almost impossible to just figure out how well we prepare, using some kind of sniff test. Our human brains just royally suck at that specific kind of analysis.

By way of example, Biden’s recent investment into port security. If a problem never occurs now, are you going to give him a point for that, or just never really consider it again?

This is partly why the scientific method needs to be so strict, slow and rigorous to get anywhere.

Candelestine,

Pandaplomacy is absolutely a thing. That said, much like in the Cold War, it’s good for nuclear superpowers with big armies to have a certain degree of open communication and, if not warm, at least cordial relations. Helps defuse potential problems early, before they turn into news articles.

So, I welcome the move on that basis alone.

On top of that, the move does have symbolic power, as the panda occupies a similar place in China as bald eagles do here in the US. Anything that warms feelings between Chinese and American citizens themselves is probably a good thing.

The RNC chairwoman calls for unity as the party faces a cash crunch and attacks by some Trump allies (apnews.com)

McDaniel spoke at the RNC’s winter meeting in Las Vegas behind closed doors on Friday, addressing a gathering of state chairmen and other top party members in what’s expected to be a critical swing state in the November election....

Candelestine,

Yeeeeah, you’ve already been sidelined as part of a fascist takeover. You guys had your chance to stop him, a few years ago before he took the mask completely off. Mike Pence even actually did, temporarily at least, and deserves credit for that. They wanted to hang him for it.

Now it’s our turn. If we fail it’ll eventually be the military’s job, and whether they choose to uphold their oaths to defend a piece of paper and literally coup him when he ignores it. If they fail, we get a fascist hell and probably end up invading Mexico, because war is how incompetent fascists keep the wheels spinning. So, kindly fuck off. Best thing you can do is spend the RNC bank account on a nice lavish vacation for yourself and vote for Biden.

Naive fools. The business elite thought they could control Hitler too. Didn’t work out so well for them either.

This Year’s Iowa Caucus Is On Track For Lowest Turnout Since 2000 (www.nytimes.com)

A New York Times analysis of the results released so far estimated that the final turnout will be around 110,000 voters. As of 11:30 pm Eastern time, about 105,000 votes had been recorded. That would be significantly below the 187,000 Republicans who voted in 2016, which was a record turnout. About 122,000 voted in 2012, 118,000...

Candelestine,

No complacency on our side. When fascism is marching, it needs to be drowned in a tidal wave of mythical proportions, so they see just how outnumbered they are, how violence won’t work for them. Fear is their tool, it’s what they understand. So, no mercy.

Candelestine,

So, this is a basic misunderstanding of gravity and acceleration. The measure of Gs is the exact measure of how fast the acceleration is.

This is just like asking if it would be comfortable to survive 100 C if the temperature was cold enough.

There is no difference between acceleration and gravity. If locked into an elevator, you wouldn’t be able to tell with certainty if the elevator started going up, or someone had just turned the gravity of the planet up to make you heavier somehow. If the elevator suddenly dropped in freefall, you would not be able to tell if it was the elevator moving down, or someone had simply turned gravity off somehow. This is part of Einstein’s Special Relativity.

Neo-Nazis Swarm Home of New England Governor (www.rollingstone.com)

Comment on Headline: I don’t know if swarm is the right word, I think that implies they entered the home? I guess a group of insects is a swarm whether it’s inside or out. They had their Nazi party in the street, and the governor’s home is protected at all times by state police....

Candelestine,

You think white supremacists shot Nazis…? I mean, yeah, I guess the most famous Nazi ended up shooting himself, that might count. Kinda.

Or do you think only white supremacists care about history? Really curious about this line of reasoning.

As a side note, falling into despair is exactly what the fascists want of you. It keeps you out of their way, which helps them.

Candelestine,

I don’t understand where this position that dems embraced neo-liberalism and abandoned unions comes from.

Who passed “right to work” laws in state houses all over the country? Who supported money as a form of speech in Citizens United? Who has tried to suppress the raising of the minimum wage at every opportunity?

Not dems, afaik. Dems have consistently fought these things.

Candelestine,

Who did “the establishment” block from running? You want to go make Bernie run somehow or something? Get the conspiracy theory nonsense out of here. People choose whether or not they will run.

Candelestine,

Extraordinarily unlikely, except in the fantasies of some Russians. If Trump wins, we wouldn’t get violent until he actually tried to suspend the Constitution, that would be the most likely instigating event. Not people voting for him and him winning, sadly, fair and square by the laws of our land.

The die-hard Trump supporters are too few in number to do anything if Biden wins. Civil war-wise anyway, they could probably manage a bunch of terrorist attacks if they were angry enough.

Candelestine,

Bullshit.

Israel is a nuclear-armed nation, it is as immune to large-scale ground invasion as N Korea or Pakistan. They do not need our thousand pound bombs, nor our military alliance. This just isn’t the 80s anymore.

Similarly, Reagan wasn’t facing a criminal trying to take down his own justice system, relying fully on being propped up by ethno-nationalists that want Palestine, all of it, exterminated, just to maintain his own position.

We could probably stop them, if we threatened them with severe economic sanctions. Cutting off the weapons would simply make Netanyahu use even more indiscriminate tactics though, like starving them all, or firebombing the whole place. He can’t accept a permanent cease fire though, because one would cost him, him personally, everything he has left.

That’s the problem with strongmen. They don’t actually give a fuck about people, just themselves. And they’d rather be an evil tyrant than a loser.

Probably can’t fix that with a phone call, don’t you think?

Candelestine,

Lemmy just has an unusually large number of passionate young people on it. Not surprising when you consider the Fediverse as more of a rebellious option looking to upend the dominance of the giants.

Also makes it feisty though. It’s kinda on you to make it good for yourself by controlling what communities you sub to though.

Candelestine,

Why do articles keep pointing the blame “at democrats” like we in the party have some kind of magical control over this?

We can only vote for the motherfuckers that run. If you run, we can vote for you. If you don’t run, we can’t vote for you. So, who are we supposed to pick?

Dean Philips, the guy that talks about appeasing republicans? No. Just, fuck no.

You, you on the other side of the screen, you should run for office. Then we might have more options.
