May 5: Are there characters and events that challenge your MC's belief system?

The entire world believes Matty is a threat, which makes him think, 'shit! Am I?' even though the last thing he wants to do is hurt anyone.

30: How do you keep track of your work? Do you have a system?

I have a whiteboard with my scene outline on post its. I keep most of my notes either in a small world-building notebook or transferred into notion. I use Scrivener to draft then export it to word when I need to get it ready for my editor.

Mar10. What annoys your antagonist most about the world they live in?

That certain people, including his own son, don't respect his authority the way he thinks they should.

March 1: What inspired you to begin writing?

I'm not sure what started it. The truth is, I've always loved stories and I cannot remember a time when I did not want to write my own. What keeps me going these days is that there are so many characters and settings and situations in my head and I desperately want to see them all brought to life.

I think when he retires from adventuring, my D&D character is going to set himself up with a small business helping local towns and villages with their pesky zombie problems.

Ethan Brade, Exterminator of the Undead

He actually finds it very relaxing.

I have heard the advice about content warnings and figured out how to do it in non-spoilery way. My question is: what kind of things should I cw? I know big things like sexual violence, child abuse and child death, even pregnancy loss or other triggering things. But any death? I'm willing to, I just don't know how granular it needs to be.

Also, I'm not cw-ing gay content. Explicit sex, yes, but not because its gay. If you want a cw because there's a gay couple in the story, d i e in a f*re.

11: Do you use dream sequences in your work? How do you feel about them?

In the broken Stars series I wrote some dream sequences, mostly to illustrate how the MC was breaking down from PTSD. I'm told they were effective. The thing about dreams is that they're rarely linear, so I tried to capture that.

Jimmy seems to have made it his mission to make sure that I do not run out of dark chocolate, and while that was not a task I assigned him, I'm glad he's taken it on...

This was a gonzo year for me, but also one where I found work-life balance. I wrote a lot, published books I was proud of in new genres, for new (gayer) audiences, started developing new skills leading me to decide to go back to school, and quit a job. I welcomed a new (fourth) grandchild. Also, I turned 50, fell in love, had my boyfriend move in, then got engaged. I can't wait to see what's coming next! Happy New Year!

We have reached the 'if it's after 8:00 it is too late to start a movie' stage of middle age.

Dec 27 - If you write in more than one genre, which is your go to?

Honestly don't have a go-to genre. I have a sci-fi, epic fantasy, me urban fantasy series going and probably always will.

Because No One Demanded It! My favorite movies of all time!

  1. Muppet Christmas Carol. 🔥😭
  2. Raiders of the Lost Ark. A classic. Yes I know it falls apart narratively but ¯\(ツ)/¯
  3. Dead Poets Society. I know a little about being forced to live a fake life and the power of literature to free you.
  4. The Emperor's New Groove. This movie is on crack and that is a compliment.
  5. Mystery Men. So great! 'maybe you should put on some shorts if you want to continue fighting evil today...'

Nov 4th.
Have you ever seen a movie that was better than the book?

Given this question doesn't specify which came first, I'm going to say yes: Star Wars.

& you may laugh, but back when I was growing up the 1st & 3rd films were never / rarely shown on TV. I don't think they were easily available to buy until the remastered versions came out in the late '90s.

But my dad had the novelisations sitting on the bookshelf, so I first came to Star Wars through them...

ChadGrayson,
@ChadGrayson@mastodon.otherworldsink.com avatar

@sandralindsey same here with reading the novelizations first. We were part of a church at the time which didn't allow us to go to the movies, and VCRs were not in wide use yet, so my parents bought me the novels.

Rewatching the first episode of stranger things. These kids do not know how to play d&d. They're attacked by the demogorgon, and everybody is shouting at each other. No one rolls for initiative before attempting a fireball, and everybody knows if your dice falls off the table, you reroll, no matter how good or bad it was. Honestly, the whole thing is a mess.

I had the goal this year to sell a story to a paying market. I did place a flash piece in an anthology, but it wasn't at the paid level (which is fine! It was my first flash piece and I was just happy to be included!) Today I got word that I sold a story to a different anthology that is paying 6 cents a word. Which maybe is not a pro rate, but I'll take it. I'm very excited about this one too!

how do you format scene breaks?

If it's a scene break where we don't change pov characters, then just a line break. If we change pov characters a line break and ***. It seems to work for me that way and no one has been confused.

I need the people who make television shows to understand that I do not want to listen to a podcast about the television show, or watch a tv show about the making of the tv show, or indeed meta-analyze the show in any context. I just want to watch the show.
