I shall be voting , because only Conservatives want women and people from ethnic minorities to hold positions of power and for gay people to be allowed to marry.

Almost up to 1000 cards sent. Given that I have already posted 14 cards this week, and will be putting 3 more in the post tomorrow, I should hit 1000 by next weekend.

It is almost 6pm here. What should I do?

  • Work on that $HELL_PROJECT for $MEGACORP?
  • Take a nap?
  • Go run some errands? Like buying chicken for dinner?
  • Work on my home-made backup script?

This is not a poll, because I am going to take a nap anyway.

DrHyde,
@DrHyde@fosstodon.org avatar

@ParadeGrotesque homemade backup scripts are NEVER the answer! At least use someone else's homemade backup script.

DrHyde,
@DrHyde@fosstodon.org avatar

@ParadeGrotesque out of interest, which one do you use? I use #rsnapshot, which was someone else's backup script until I took over maintenance, but I have now handed it on to a new victim^Wvolunteer. Not sure it would be my first choice for backups this decade though.

@ParadeGrotesque it wasn't me, I wasn't there, you can't prove anything, and anyway a bigger boy made me do it!

@DrHyde@fosstodon.org avatar

Dear #Linux users, I maintain a piece of software whose purpose is to detect what OS, and what variation on an OS, it is running on. Right now, it can tell the difference between generic Linux, generic Debian-a-like, real Debian, Devuan, and Ubuntu. I am too lazy to set up every other distribution in existence in VMs, so would be every so thankful if you could let me know what distro you use, and past a copy of its /etc/os-release file to somewhere like https://pastebin.com/

I freaking hate politics right now. There is no place for views that aren't hard-left or hard-right. There is no desire for dialog. Most people in reality are not perfect ideological stereotypes. But in spite of that, I see more and more of my online acquaintances falling into line with these sterotypes. Being part of the left leaning FOSS community, usually this means presenting as far left revolutionaries. It is resulting in the split of communities and ejection of good faith participants.

Spotify to raise prices, then pay musicians even less.

If your music is on Spotify, why? Are you so successful that you enjoy subsidizing Spotify executives' extravagant lifestyles?

@etherdiver I’ve never used Spotify but my understanding is that it’s more like radio than buying music, and that the payouts were similar to radio too. Am I wrong?

I do love these new SSDs that I got over the weekend. They're soooo quiet, nice and fast, in particular with no latency when they spin up. That's all my toy budget for the month gone, but I think I'll buy the same again next month to replace the volume that stores my backups. That's still got oodles of space left, but the quiet is nice, and while spin-up time doesn't matter for my backups, having basically zero seek time will really help a lot.

For those wanting details ... 5 x 4TB Samsung QVO 870 and one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CM73VQKH?th=1. They're hanging off USB on a Mac Mini.

DrHyde,

re toots from a few days ago, I'm using instead of the much better , because ZFS just didn't work very well on Mac OS when I played around with it a few days ago. So in the slightly longer term I'm looking for a cheap machine on which I can run and ZFS, which will support at least 6 x 2.5" SSDs in its own chassis, all hot-swappable without opening it up and without tools, with at least two eSATA ports. Recommendations for something which will Just Work with FreeBSD please!

DrHyde,

@RL_Dane this UI element in Disk Utility seems to say ... yes 😉 . But they're certainly quieter than the spinning rust that they've replaced, no matter how many times I click the "more louderer" button.

Am I missing something obvious with ? All the vdevs in my pool have names like /dev/disk5s1, and the numbers can change depending on what order they power up. I can't find any way of giving them names like "ssd-with-red-sticker-on", "ssd-with-blue-sticker-on" and so on, which would make swapping out a failed disk soooo much easier.

Astronomy Picture of the Day for Dec 25, 2023.
This beautiful image of the Basilica of Superga near Turin, Italy, framed by the peak of Monte Viso and a crescent moon behind it, was taken by Valerio Minato 10 days ago, after 5 unsuccessful attempts over 6 years. It takes a lot of planning and some good fortune to capture such an image. The alignment occurs about once a year and the weather Gods have to smile.
