The best way to preserve the fediverse is to provide support to it.

Pay your instance admin if you can, if you can't boost their fundraiser posts

Pay the developers who develop the software you use on there if you can. If you can't, boost their posts and help them fundraise.

Also pay the projects non Dev folks. Because they help Devs to focus on the code while they do community development, moderation etc.

It's an ecosystem and we can't rely on the whims of VCs.

Amazing how a minor cold impacts on you. I’m going to spend the evening in bed listening to an audiobook because I don’t feel up to anything else. I’ve just bought Suzie Miller’s Prima Facie, narrated by Jodie Comer. I’ve heard really good things about it so looking forward

Another thing I am missing on is the ability to add notes to blocks.

For some, it's obvious. For others, I'd really like to be reminded why I blocked.

[edit to add: I mean notes added during the blocking process, without having to go to the account and add a note there.]

@vicgrinberg I just tested with some troll account I blocked, and I am able to add a note (also for non blocked users). This is from the browser on the instance I'm on, maybe it is an admin setting?

I joined this workshop on scientific error https://www.eurandom.tue.nl/event/perspectives-on-scientific-error/ organized by @lakens and others. What a great event! So refreshing to talk to people about science, theory building, and incentive structures. No talks proposing LLMs replacing humans. Excellent, highly recommend

I keep seeing people I like on here posting and needing to add big disclaimers that you shouldn't shame them for using Google services. Jesus, my Gmail account is 20 years old, of course I don't want to change it. And the alternatives people suggest for other services are almost always clunkier and/or more technical. That decision absolutely isn't easy at all. If you're shaming people over this stuff, shut the fuck up.

@aetataureate I investigated/tried switching a few years back after Google fired their ethical AI team, but it is a lot of work. In the end, I switched all my government, finance etc accounts to Proton, but my Gmail is how people from 20 years ago can reach me (they don't often try but it's possible πŸ™ˆ), and what I use for ordering things online

When I meet new people eventually I ask "what year are you from?". Often people will be like "do you want to know how old I am" and while I understand how one question informs the other, I find "when are you from" gives so much more context? I don't like "where are you from", because this changes (where are you REALLY from 😒) but "when" does not

Any suggestions for games for Android phones? So far my favorites have been Terraria, open source civilization, "I love hue too" (matching color tiles), Hexamania (a bit like Tetris perhaps but at your own speed), various rogue like RPGs like Pixel dungeon
