🆕 blog! “I don't understand the sacrifices people make for work”
Just before I graduated from University, I went to a careers fair to help me decide what I wanted to do with my life. At one of the stalls was our local Police force1 - advertising the exciting new world of digital forensics2. Here is - almost verbatim - the conversation I had with the […]
@Edent Funny, I had a similar conversation with the police too. I'm not sure I'd have fit well with them, though, so maybe it's a good thing.
As you said though, I think the thing that put me off a lot of roles was the idea you'd spend time/money training for a job with only 1 real employer offering jobs, followed by a career subject to the whim of whatever government was in power.
Six years ago, I went to my first EMF Camp. The next event was cancelled by Covid. The one after that saw me come down with Covid - although I presented remotely. So I was beyond thrilled to be able to attend & speak this year. There's always a risk that you can never recapture […]
@Edent agree on the comms feels like there should be a feed on the main website of important updates. To make sure the key information can be found amongst the noise.
@Edent I think the badges are pretty good, I already have a lot of ideas for things that could be improved on the default experience, and there’s 2 whole years to level them up for another run. So I get your point about wanting a working out of the unbox experience for a paid-for thing, but I’m willing to forgive on this one. I share your “pillar in the middle of stage B” frustration!
@Edent keybase died long ago of feature bloat and an acute cryptocurrency infection. Pity really, I would still like to have what it was trying to do at the start.
@Edent I know someone was looking into it, but then the whole Recall thing hit and it didn't seem like such a good idea. There's https://rem.ing/ for the mac already
I recently went to EMF Camp (which is Glastonbury for geeks - lots of random electronics, talks, art, and camping). Naturally, I took along my Infrared camera and pointed it at interesting things! First up… sewage! Festivals often have big tanks to take away human effluence. But how can you, a normal human, tell how […]
@jtruk weird. It's just hosted on my site, so no trackers. And the vid is downloaded straight from Masto. Looks OK on my Firefox, but I'll check DDG.
Thanks!
One of the things that often confuses Americans when they visit the UK is our lack of window screens. All the Imperialist Yankee media I consumed as a kid had a delightful array of screen doors and windows. But here in rainy old England, there's never been much call for them. Mosquitos are rare. Our bugs tend not to be large and terrifying. Our summers are rarely …
Just wanted to give a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who came to my talk. It was lovely to see you. I really appreciated all the questions and comments.
And a special high-five to the AV techs for getting it all working.
Top tip! You can see what phone numbers people have been dialing. When the dialpad is cold, a warm human finger leaves enough heat energy to detect for quite some time.
