@GrimmReality "in loco parentis" indeed.

ErgonWolf,
@ErgonWolf@pawb.fun avatar

@zdl @GrimmReality Well, in the US, it's a literal legal phrase, which is when some other authority, individual or organization, takes the place of the parental authority in terms of the law concerning a minor. Schools, from elementary to Colleges and universities are known to have "in loco parentis".

It's a specific legal phrase and concept.

copyright question it seems worth pondering:

If I use a false persona to get malicious code into an open source project, and along the way include some good code to cover my tracks, and I mendaciously comply with all the standard stuff needed to get my code into the project (copyright statements etc), then is that good code actually freely licensed?

Talking to @grimalkina about mathematics in computing, I'm reminded of the fact that all the theory courses that teach you all the different ways you can think about computer programming happen after all the weeding courses purpose-built to cull out anyone who, y'know, actually thinks about programming differently, and just wondering how many human beings this field will casually and structurally throw overboard so it can stay a narrow, incurious priesthood.

If Warner wanted to monetize their back catalog, they'd open up a YouTube channel with several live streams of their gigantic catalog of Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies cartoons and put a couple of ads between each 6 minute short. People would tune into these.

Like, honestly, WHERE can you go to watch Bugs Bunny today?

I don't normally drink soda or caffeine. Today I decided for lunch to have a Dr. Pepper.

To let you know the effect this had on me. I have had to reread this whole toot multiple times to remember to put spaces in between words.

Time has paused - the fabric of the world is exposed to me. I am one with the universe!

ErgonWolf,
@ErgonWolf@pawb.fun avatar

@mentallyalex So, just as a pointer, the old recommendations by Dr. Pepper about when to drink Dr. Pepper were to have one at 10AM, 2pm, and 4pm. 10, 2, and 4, was their old advertising slogan.

Imagine the amount of push you'd have through your day if you did this, especially if you had, say, coffee for breakfast and maybe iced tea for lunch. Caffeine every 2 hours across your entire day!

I clicked on a couple of videos on YouTube of men with nice bodies because, well, looking at nice male bodies is a thing I enjoy.

And now YouTube is serving me the most extreme stuff possible. Like, hardcore, impossible to achieve body dysmorphia inspiring stuff.

This is one example.

I mean, I'm getting TONS of this stuff now.

If I were 12, this could maybe wreck my psyche.

Want to know things about mushrooms? This is an interesting chat, hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson talking to mycologist Bryn Dentinger, with comedian Chuck Nice, for an hour about mushrooms.

NdGT is interesting to encounter in this format. He's usually very polished.

Anyway, it's about mushrooms. Enjoy!

Obviously the solution for Jack Sweeney being taken to task for tracking celebrity private jets is for a shit-ton more people to start tracking and posting the locations of celebrity private jets. It's public information, and they want to rely on security through obscurity.

Don't want your travels tracked? Don't travel on a vehicle that is required by law to be publicly tracked.

Apparently I am seething with malaise and disdain for Silicon Valley, and that's distasteful or something. :blobcateyes:

Well, SV has been causing malaise (ask the parents whom Zuck was just apologizing to) for and showed disdain (ask the Rohingya) towards pretty much everyone else. And made a killing doing so.

OpenAI said outright it's impossible for them to compensate authors of works they use as "training data". Implying their business model is more important than somebody's livelihood. 🤔

ErgonWolf,
@ErgonWolf@pawb.fun avatar

@rysiek The thing is, you watch some dystopian movie or series, maybe based on a YA novel but maybe not, and you think "how does a society end up in such a state?"

Well... gestures around vaguely

Having a bit of a surreal moment today.

Way back on in December 2006, I went to see U2 play the final show of their Vertigo tour in Honolulu. I would not have gone to this show, except for Pearl Jam was opening for them.

It is very rare for one of my favorite bands to open for another of my favorite bands, so I went.

A third band played that day, Rocko And The Devils. A band led by U2's tour manager and a bunch of his roadie friends.

I've had bootlegs of both the U2 and Pearl Jam sets for quite a while, but somehow I found a bunch of Rocko And The Devils live songs from Honolulu tonight!

I have no idea about the order of the set list. I think I know the first and last songs, but inside that I'm guessing.

Anyway, I finally have that entire evening of music in my bootleg library! How lovely!

ErgonWolf,
@ErgonWolf@pawb.fun avatar

@SrRochardBunson It is the single most expensive concert I've ever been to, as I flew to Honolulu and got two nights in a hotel there for the show, THE SAME WEEKEND AS PEARL HARBOR MEMORIAL AND HONOLULU MARATHON...

There were like 1/2 million extra people on the island that weekend.

I will need to continue to do research and see if I can get clarity to this final, tiny warm-up setlist by this random band of roadies, but wow, it's weird to have found that finally!

@ErgonWolf@pawb.fun avatar

Way back in 1997, U2 put on a tour that they wanted to make so over the top, so extreme... so they invented a giant screen that fits across the back of a stadium and invented a tour spectacle that might seem very familiar to anyone who went to see Taylor or Beyoncé last year.

This isn't about the band. This is about the tour, the technology, the logistics. And it is all from the very beginning of what stadium concerts have become today. "Working In POPMart" 50m

Okay, look.

The title of this is sensationalist. It is click-baity.

Except that it isn't. If you actually listen to this, which I recommend, you will learn that "delusional" has a specific meaning and isn't an insult.

You will also learn that becoming deluded is something that can be enacted upon people from the outside.

This really incendiary title actually speaks to how people have been led to believe things that aren't true, and are willing to insist they ARE true even when presented with evidence they are not.

Take the 35-odd minutes to listen to this. It will change how you think about things.
