Concerned about microplastics? Research shows one of the biggest sources is car tyres

A lot of the emphasis on reducing microplastics has focussed on things like plastic bags, clothing, and food packaging.

But there's a growing body of research that shows one of the biggest culprits by far is car tyres.

It's increasingly clear that we simply cannot solve the issue of microplastics in the environment while still using tyres — even with electric-powered cars.

"Tyre wear stands out as a major source of microplastic pollution. Globally, each person is responsible for around 1kg of microplastic pollution from tyre wear released into the environment on average each year – with even higher rates observed in developed nations.

"It is estimated that between 8% and 40% of these particles find their way into surface waters such as the sea, rivers and lakes through runoff from road surfaces, wastewater discharge or even through airborne transport.

"However, tyre wear microplastics have been largely overlooked as a microplastic pollutant. Their dark colour makes them difficult to detect, so these particles can’t be identified using the traditional spectroscopy methods used to identify other more colourful plastic polymers."

https://theconversation.com/check-your-tyres-you-might-be-adding-unnecessary-microplastics-to-the-environment-205612#:~:text=Tyre%20wear%20stands%20out%20as,rates%20observed%20in%20developed%20nations.

"Microplastic pollution has polluted the entire planet, from Arctic snow and Alpine soils to the deepest oceans. The particles can harbour toxic chemicals and harmful microbes and are known to harm some marine creatures. People are also known to consume them via food and water, and to breathe them, But the impact on human health is not yet known.

"“Roads are a very significant source of microplastics to remote areas, including the oceans,” said Andreas Stohl, from the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, who led the research. He said an average tyre loses 4kg during its lifetime. “It’s such a huge amount of plastic compared to, say, clothes,” whose fibres are commonly found in rivers, Stohl said. “You will not lose kilograms of plastic from your clothing.”"

"Microplastics are of increasing concern in the environment [1, 2]. Tire wear is estimated to be one of the largest sources of microplastics entering the aquatic environment [3,4,5,6,7]. The mechanical abrasion of car tires by the road surface forms tire wear particles (TWP) [8] and/or tire and road wear particles (TRWP), consisting of a complex mixture of rubber, with both embedded asphalt and minerals from the pavement [9]."

There’s so many variables, it’s ridiculous to try to pin it on individuals.

You really believe a large Corp like reddit decided on something as big as this without consulting with their lawyers? Fuck spez, but there’s no way not a single lawyer working with reddit remembered the massive legislation that has by far had the largest impact on the internet in years.

Did you see the “tents” they have? A wooden cube frame made with 2x4s and a plastic sheet draped over it. I wouldn’t keep my pigs in such a shitty thing, let alone human beings…

Does anyone know any Hard Sci Fi books about humans surviving without any hospitable worlds?

I’m looking to get inspiration for my own writing. I need a hard sci fi series where earth (and earthlike worlds) are too rare, inaccessible, and/or previously spoiled beyond ability to sustain life. Bonus points if it is set on a multi-generational space station or starship without any other options and goes into detail about...

Try last epoch. Got it last week, it’s really scratching that Diablo itch without being as complex as path of exile. It’s not as visually polished as Diablo and the story is average at best, but the builds are more interesting, a loooooot more qol stuff and it plays just as well. I have very high hopes for the future of this game.

Who, in your opinion, is the most annoying character in any game?

Personally, it’s Faith from Farcry 5 for me. Uninteresting dialog that can be summed up to “I was bullied once” and that’s it. Literally every other character is so much more interesting. Jacob gives you a sequence where you run through a gulag which he then uses against you, John tries to kill you and is openly hateful...

Expanse is like reading an amazing and realistic adventure.

Hyperion is like reading an adventure while high on shrooms.

They’re both very well written and entertaining, but so different in their set-up.

Currently in my life I prefer realistic style scifi over mind bending stuff, so I’d recommend the expanse. .

Japanese pay is quite low compared to eg the US. 10m jpy is a very decent income in Japan. You won’t find many people not in high skilled tech jobs or years of experience with it.

When would you let go?

Hey all! This may be kind of a dumb post as I know I need to make this decision myself, but I‘d sure love some advice. My oldest dog is 11, going on 12. The poor girl is diabetic, blind, has fatty lipomas, and mobility issues due to diabetes, breed, and age. This morning, we are fairly sure she had a stroke of some sort (the...

Man, this should also be a thing for humans. Seeing my grandmother deteriote very slowly is just painful. She wants it to end, we want it to end seeing her deaf, borderline blind and slowly turning incontinent, but her very old body just keeps going on and on without needing long term medical care. Should be part of human rights, dying on your own terms (without having to resort to violence, eg suicide)

Should Collar Points Reach Your Lapels? | Bond Suits (www.bondsuits.com)

Here’s a topic that comes up occasionally, and some people have strong opinions about it while others can’t be bothered with it. Some believe that a shirt’s collar points must be hidden under the jacket’s lapels. Others accept that certain narrower collar designs will not be hidden under the lapels. I prefer the neatness...

As long as they don’t reach over the jacket, anything is fine imo. If the shirt collar is over your jacket at any point, it looks absolutely horrendous. You look like some wannabe failed pimp or a teenager that can’t dress themselves.

Sure, if you already look like a model. If you’re an average Joe, it’ll just look absolutely stupid imo.

Considering how lazy I am, there is no way my brain would bother with all the little details I see everywhere when I go out. When I’m at a busy station or crossing and I literally see thousands of different people walk by, not a single repeat face? Proof enough for me this is real tbh.

(and if you go the simulation way, who cares? If a simulation can give billions of ppl their own lives, feelings, dreams and hopes, it does not matter in the slightest to the ppl living in it that it’s real or a simulation)

Fair enough, could always just add [chatgpt] to the post though

Firipu,
@Firipu@startrek.website avatar

Yeah, I use that one a lot. But some of the more outlandish designs don’t appear to be from models from civetai. I’m mostly interested in those tbh. Making humans is easy :). Making cool non human things is more interesting of a challenge to me

What can the US do to help Mexico finally stop the cartels?

Politicians constantly talk about stopping the illegal immigrants that are coming from Mexico, but putting a wall has never and will never be a solution since the reason why so many displaced keep coming across the border is mostly to escape the crime, corruption, inequality, and violence of they have to live in their home...

Nothing stops you from commuting by bike. My best friend commutes over 40km by bike every day. Due to eternal traffic jams he’s not even much slower than going by car, he also almost gets to go in a straight line rather than following highways. Get out of that US centric mindset and realize a lot more is possible by bike than you might think.

Watch alone 2usd? Watch together with the sign writer 10usd? I mean, the more the merrier I guess?

Or am I misunderstanding this?
