I am often disappointed by TTRPG books that have a great binding, beautiful art, great layout... but have about one typo per page. And some paragraphs that have clearly outdated terminology/keywords from a previous draft. No work done on proofreading the text! What other publishing industry has so many issues with the text fall through the cracks?!

HeatherNatalie,

@PlaneSailingGames I'm not sure there's an exact number but when I see one or more per page (this includes missing punctuation) it's a big problem.

I think in a typical novel I'll find about 2-5.

@PlaneSailingGames Find and replace drives me up the wall! It's not hard to write a regular expression that decreases the false positives significantly, and even then you should tab through each replace and judge it manually!

I was a NASA intern in the '80s when I heard that astronomers had discovered a mysterious disk around the nearby star Fomalhaut.
Now JWST has revealed exactly what they are: three enormous, dusty asteroid belts around another star!
https://webbtelescope.org/contents/news-releases/2023/news-2023-109

JWST observations of the Fomalhaut system at 25.5 μm. The image shows the observations deprojected by the best fitting inclination angle.

@coreyspowell Such an exciting time in the world of astronomy. It seems like something exciting like this every day.

I wonder how the Space Engine guy is feeling about all the stuff he's got to add now

Anyone ever GM'ed at a convention? What was the experience like?

I think I'd like to try but definitely not dnd 5e - I want something more focused both in topic and expectations.

I feel like posts are dwindling. Are we losing activity after the initial rush of post-bird arrivals ... or are we getting plenty but newer users aren't hashtagging, or using a different tag? Or is everyone out frolicking in the grass? 😅

HeatherNatalie,

@SJohnRoss I'm probably part of the problem - I forget to hashtag sometimes.

I have bad news for anti-ML (/"AI") art people: if you hire an artist, they'll probably use Adobe's Photoshop. Photoshop uses ML for regular tasks like upscaling images.

You might think, 'I don't mind ML for upscaling', but you're no longer against ML, and can't put 'no AI was used in this book' (well, you can, because AI doesn't exist).

Basically, the landscape has turned into a grey mush, so I don't see any way to request or make
clear guarantees.

HeatherNatalie,

@puns_and_ships @malin That upscaling functionality is trained on the same unlicensed/stolen image sets as all the other A.I. It's the same thing.

A while ago I found out that in 4D, the dice would be d5, d8, d16, d24, d120. A little tempted to make a zine-sized 4D that utilizes these dice and 3D 'flat' battle maps.

Of course, a gelatinous tesseract would be a must-have.

All these MAGA Musk worshippers spinning "success" out of complete failure.

Gee, it almost seems like the "success must be earned" crowd wants to give Musk a participation trophy.

HeatherNatalie,

@shansterable Sorry, this is not a great understanding of how spaceflight in the U.S. works. I am no Elon Musk fan, I think he's quite childish, but he has less to do with this than you think.

NASA always contracts out to launch providers who bid for money to spend whoever they see fit to build that, including iterative tests.

Relativity Space recently had a rocket that failed at the same stage, but the test was considered a success because it passed Max-Q.

Spaceflight is often like this.

What's the best reading method?

Going to the library and seeing which ones they have, and just checking out one they've got in.
