May is almost over, but this month is 'Month of LibreOffice' (see https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2024/05/01/do-something-awesome-join-the-month-of-libreoffice-may-2024).

I recently went back to using @libreoffice again (I used to use OpenOffice) instead of Microsoft Office, because now Microsoft wants to start charging monthly for Word, Excel, etc.

I don't know why I ever stopped using it (Having Microsoft Office already installed on a new laptop?) but LibreOffice is SO great, I never should have stopped. I love the ease of it, .odt files that work wherever -- the whole thing is superior to Microsoft products.

I've been using it for a couple of years now, and I love it.

I, too, was using OpenOffice prior. I also appreciate that #LibreOffice is here on Mastodon, where I get tips on use. Viva LibreOffice!

"Private equity firms owned more than 20% of the health-care companies that went bankrupt last year. The nonprofit Private Equity Stakeholder Project, which investigates multiple industries, said it spotted at least 17 such bankruptcies in 2023, compared with eight in 2019 and even fewer during the previous three years, marking a 112.5% increase over the last five years."

"There are about 418 rural hospitals at risk of closure, according to a new report from Chartis, a healthcare advisory services firm." https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/finance/418-rural-hospitals-at-risk-of-closure-breakdown-by-state.html

With private equity firms failing to find success in healthcare, and with rural hospitals unable to keep their doors open, now is perfect time for the US government to take the healthcare industry public.

Profit and healthcare don't mix. Scoop up the hospitals and clinics for pennies on the dollar and restore healthcare access to rural areas.

I follow COVID scientists here on Mastodon. I've seen them post links to studies showing waning effectiveness of COVID vaccines after 6 months.

I received the updated booster last October and want to get boosted again prior to some planned travel in July. (Air travel to the MAGA anti-vax cesspool known as Florida)

I have contacted three pharmacies in my area.

One has no COVID vaccines at all and said they won't receive any until fall.

The other two say they will not vaccinate me because they must follow US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines stating that only people 65 years and older should receive boosters at this time.

They won't vaccinate me even if I am willing to pay out of pocket.

Both say I must get a recommendation from my health care provider before they will even consider it.

Less than 20% of people in my state are up to date on their COVID vaccines. For those of us who want to follow the science and not some arbitrary age limitation, why not let us get vaccinated?

So, super fancy, exclusive restaurant catering to wealthy diners rips off its customers, harasses and steals from its employees, then washes its hands by gifting real estate to a proselytizing Christian organization that provides housing and meals to people who have been pushed down, abused, and displaced by the kinds of people who endure a waitlist of up to year, jet to a dining destination, and pay $500 for dinner. Can’t help but think this illustrates the capitalism circle of life.

The Willows Inn, a super fancy, fine-dining, farm-to-table, restaurant on a remote island near Bellingham, WA, that the New York Times in 2011 labeled "one of 10 Restaurants Worth a Plane Ride,” had a precipitous fall from grace in 2022. Now, the property is selling, and the proceeds will benefit Lighthouse Mission Ministries, a shelter for the unhoused.

In its heyday, as it topped the culinary world's best restaurant lists, fraud and abuse festered behind the scenes.

Employees alleged a nightmare environment of sexual harassment, bullying, misogyny, and racism.

The Willows Inn paid $1.37 million to settle a class-action lawsuit for wage theft.

Turns out, the restaurant's "farm-to-table" claims also fell short. Some of the supposed locally sourced and foraged food actually came from random grocery stores and even Costco. At $500 a plate, that’s not what you bargained for.

To make amends, the former owners, Tim and Marcia McEvoy, donated the property to Bellingham’s Lighthouse Mission, a Christian organization that provides shelter and services to the unhoused (and only hires Christians). The property, reportedly worth about $2.4 million, has accepted an offer and is expected to change hands soon.

I mean, how can you enslave child-bearing folks under the boot of capitalism if they refuse to create a steady labor supply?

*The chance is very likely slim to none since the patriarchy by definition values men's rights. But still, capitalism also requires an underclass, and forced birth plunges many into that category without regard to gender.

Today, the new minimum wage of $17.28 in my city of Bellingham, WA goes into effect.

Compared to some other cities in the US, this may sound high. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 (since 2009).

Unfortunately, experts have calculated Bellingham's "living wage" closer to $23.52 for an individual and $29.97 for a family of four with two working parents.

According to Redfin, "In March 2024, Bellingham home prices were up 12.2% compared to last year, selling for a median price of $685K."

Average rent for an apartment is $1,863, and average rent for a house is $2,891.

Whatcom County, where Bellingham is located, recorded a 27% jump in unhoused people in 2023 (the most recent data), the highest increase since the point in time survey began in 2008.

This is the type of comment I’ve been getting a lot for my latest piece: Always from self-regarding liberals who never want to grapple with the fact that the civil rights protests of the 1950s and 60s – the legacy of which they surely want to claim – clearly violated those principles.

I looked into organizing a protest in my city. To obtain a permit, I would have had to file all the paperwork in my name. If anything goes wrong, who do you think will be blamed?

"Getting the proper permit" may be a risk too life threatening to take in a political environment pocked by stochastic terrorism.

I won't take that risk. I'd rather take my chances on protesting without a paper trail to my name, thank you very much.

To all the brave university students protesting the ongoing genocide in Gaza, I see you, I hear you, and I applaud your resolve. Also, please protect yourselves.

It is my duty now for the future to point out that the band DEVO formed in the early 1970s "in response to the failed promise of utopian progress peddled by post-WWII politicians and consumer culture" and amid the turmoil surrounding Vietnam war protests in the US.

The core members of DEVO were friends with two of the four students who were shot by gas-masked National Guardsman at the May 4, 1970, Vietnam war protest on the campus of Kent State University in Ohio. Three founding members of the band attended Kent State at that time.

Gerald Casale (co-founder, co-lead vocalist and bass player) said that was "the most DEVO day of his life." The theory that humankind is evolving in reverse. That was the first evidence that hit him square in the gut and the heart and the mind that this was true.

"In the next two years, I realized that the system was rotten to the core. That everything I believed was an illusion."

Still others have been caught trying to cast votes in the names of their dead spouses or family members, one of whom was initially a right-wing cause célèbre after claiming someone had stolen his dead wife’s absentee ballot.

And just last month, a former election official in Milwaukee was found guilty of voter fraud for using her position to get obtain fraudulent absentee ballots and send them to a Republican state lawmaker who’d boosted Trump’s election lies."

Even if he didn't raise $50 million, Trump most likely raised some millions.

They will risk internment and torture in camps of "people Trump used to like but now doesn't" just to avoid paying one more cent in taxes.

I'd considering paying to keep AI OUT of my search results.

Now THERE'S a business model:

  1. Create and hype a "groundbreaking new technology"
  2. Proliferate the technology widely
  3. Watch it predictably hallucinate snippets of lies and nuggets of corporate liability
  4. Witness the public recoil from the horror
  5. Witness corporate subscribers dump the service in the wake of lawsuits
  6. Having unleashed a scourge on society in the name of efficiency and innovation, business now charges to "protect" you from the monster it created

Instead, Google is so deep into the punch bowl of AI Kool-Aid, they still believe AI is worth paying for. Sunk costs are bitch.
