I saw an ad today for a #DND adventure that is almost one thousand pages long! That seems kind of ridiculous.

@Tim_Eagon Some people think that if a little is good, then more is better.

kyonshi, to nuclear
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

if i noticed something when talking with outspoken pro-nuclear people it's that you really can't trust anything they say. they are intellectually bankrupt, will use all kinds of shady argumentation tactics, ad hominems, and can't even be bothered to write their own arguments (instead using AI for that)

but they do expect you to provide sources.

I wouldn't trust anything from them

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi this seems rather harsh. I don't use AI, but also don't have my own arguments. I just went with the broader Physics community.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi we can support nuclear energy without putting it by a population, next to tsunami, with occasional earthquakes. Godzilla's the least of the worries there.

Trying to make an easy visual about how to roll stats X + Y against an opponent, and suddenly the system looks more difficult that when just writing it.

Better infographics may be required.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@ericmpaq
It's the average of 2D6. The theory is:

Player rolls 1D6 + Stats, and GM rolls 1D6 + Stat, and compare results.

Or can make the player roll both dice, but use 1D6 - 1D6 against Target Number 0 (that's the same system, rephrased).

Or we can have the player roll 1D6 + 1D6 against TN 7.

(This is also the same system as above, we're just making the player roll the dice)

GMs: I need to display a timer that counts up in minutes and seconds to my players, and can be manually restarted by the GM. Needs to display in the main area not the log.

Basically, I want a manual version of this thing https://foundryvtt.com/packages/hurry-up

can anyone help? This is so that I can run the amazing Decagone module for Mothership

@masukomi Get a hammer - it lets you add nails, and keeps players in line.

My brothers and sisters in christ, to all the PbtA Devs, because we seem to be the only motherfuckers who do this, do not say "the playbooks are available online so we aren't putting them in the print book."

For the love of god, pay the extra 2 dollars a book to print them. Otherwise, in twenty years when every download link to them is gone forever because the internet is ephemeral, your game will be literally unplayable.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@Covok

Despite support, I claim exemption to this edict on the grounds of git.

Encounters in BIND change each month (as real-time passes between sessions) so a QR code provides them, and automatically updates.

But the books won't vanish, as everyone who works on one takes a full copy. Microsoft buried one copy beneath the Northern snow, so it may outlast the cockroaches.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@masukomi @Covok not 'github' - git. I'm using it as the decentralised service it was intended to be. It's on half a dozen sites, and if they all die, developers with a copy can put it up again, and a new QR is born.

Of course, a PDF with the book would be better, but it won't update when the basilisks hibernate, so you may as well use the tables in the book.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@masukomi @Covok
'Covok' minus 'v' = 'cook'.

Cooks fry (or caramelise) onions.

kyonshi, to mastodon
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

it's interesting how I lately have started to move a lot of my online activities back to #Thunderbird (on Windows)/#Claws Mail (on Linux) as standalone desktop applications. It is quite convenient to have all the different communication channels I am interested in in one single spot. (email, usenet, rss, irc)

In fact #Mastodon is the outlier, nobody so far seems to be interested in making a Thunderbird plugin for that. Although I guess I could use the bitlbee plugin @kensanata made for that.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

Google: everything is a web-app, hosted only here.

#gemini: fracture the internet! Use more ports! Self-host!

@kyonshi: everything is Thunderbird. Ports end at 25.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi I have a feint notion to set one up for a Vampire game running in real time at 1 day per month or similar. No logins, just instant access to Elysium.

I'm using AI to generate placeholder images in my game's layout (good for feel & tone). I'll replace them with actual human creations later.

It's hard, because AI REALLY doesn't "understand" anything. So if it's not standard (i.e. the crap we come up with for games) it's gonna get tripped up.

This is one of those mistakes, but also it's SO DAMN CUTE I had to share.

I'm not sure what game these 4 belong in, but I'm confident I want to play it.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@masukomi last year I found it impossible to use ML for any interactions. Has that become any better? Can you explain 'x does y to z'?

I suspect the limitation will remain forever, given the lack of understanding.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@masukomi very thorough. Cheers!

Any shapechanging spell in an RPG that doesn't include "Oh, and you can change whatever you like in the pants and chest departments, etc" has failed to understand why a great many people would pursue that magic.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen
I wandered down this rabbit hope some years ago. Shapechanging overlapped with illusion, as both lead to disguises. The solution was to bar shapechanging from altering the face, with some Middle-Ages metaphysics.

"The face shows the soul. Red-heads transformed into a cat will become a red-haired cat"

So people show little clues about their identity, because some games need that balance.

malin,
@malin@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen always is. The character sheet doesn't have much details, so I'm just relying on players to govern what the 'essential' characteristics are.

    Sounds good but I cannot hear 'snail farm' without picturing a French person from a Warner brothers cartoon.

    What about rhino beetle maggots? Meat eaters are always talking about their protein. Those guys are half protein - that's better than a steak.

    I don't know why I'm feeling wrung out lately. By all accounts things are pretty good right now. But I'm just devoid of good vibes.
    I want to be left alone for a week to watch bad movies and lie on the couch in silence. But I don't know why!

    malin,
    @malin@dice.camp avatar

    @nickdrawthing some things have reasons, but most only have causes.

    Some centuries, people would have explained these feelings with an elf of some kind.

    Conversation earlier today has me thinking a bit about the distinction between open and open source in RPGs (setting aside the topic of not-really-open RPGs).

    There are plenty of open systems (that is, systems you can legitimately take and do whatever the heck you want with them) but a much smaller set of open source systems ( @malin keeps a nice list of them here - https://ttrpgs.com/post/foss_list - if you’re curious.)

    It's a curious distinction.

    malin,
    @malin@dice.camp avatar

    @masukomi @rdonoghue @genesisoflegend
    If the source files are open, I think that still counts.

    Got a link?

    It's been a minute; let's do this again:

    If you are a Tabletop RPG nerd and have less than, say, 500 followers (or think you have less than 500 that are actually active):

    1. Write a post to introduce yourself and your particular nerdery, if you haven't already got one pinned.

    2. Reply in the comments with a link to or copy of that post.

    3. Share, check back to find people you want to follow, all that.

    malin,
    @malin@dice.camp avatar

    @nickdrawthing This goes to a login page.

    malin,
    @malin@dice.camp avatar

    @nickdrawthing I suspect it's less to do with 'fedi' in general, and more about the service (so, Mastodon, as opposed to your original link).

    Opening links in a private browsing tab is probably a reliable way to check (I can open your post here on dice.camp in a private tab).

    malin,
    @malin@dice.camp avatar

    @nickdrawthing That works.
