I’m looking for work! If you’re hiring and I seem like a fit, please reach out.

I have ~7 years of experience as a full stack software developer, and was founding engineer / CTO of Zoba.com.

I graduated from #Harvard in 2017, have been working on early stage startups since 2014. I studied CS, concentrating on data science and ML.

I’m strong in #Django, RoR, #Node, #TypeScript, #Python, #Svelte and #Tailwind. I’ve dabbled in #Spring, #Kotlin, #Vue and #React.

    “The major difference between meteorologists and climatologists is that meteorologists predict weather for the near term, while climatologists study past weather patterns to predict trends.

    The difference between climate and weather is a matter of time. Weather refers to the day-to-day atmospheric conditions that can change quickly, and a weather forecast may predict minutes to hours to days ahead. Climate, on the other hand, refers to the long term.”

    @Andrew @ramblingsteve they’re estimating 1 billion in revenue according to the article, iirc. Which is awfully round.. We can only hope that the IRS does its job.

    For that number to be true, there would have to be 25 billion in revenue they are already collecting from the affected, right? For a 4% increase to result in 1 billion

    First day of my class CS181 - Machine Learning, in 2014. The Professor said, "Machine learning is just statistics reinvented by computer scientists".

    I wish people would stop using 'learning' and 'intelligence' to describe these algorithms. That are merely probability distributions fitted to data. It is a natural progression of statistics not biological intelligence.

    Firefish is so great. Homage to the fox. But for this great sea we call the fediverse.

    Jdreben,
    @Jdreben@mastodon.world avatar

    Firefish. Remember the name.

    Fully open source. Built with latest tools. Faster development and far more feature robust than Mastodon. Federated and self hostable. My favorite social media app out there right now and my bet in the future.

    Perhaps a reason I despise the word ‘influencer’ is that it applies exclusivity to what should be viewed as - because it is - a universal human trait.

    We influence each other. Welcome to humanity. What you read and who you interact with influences who you are.

    This is why we must self moderate our influences rather than let them be chosen for us.

    Self proclaimed influencers influence me too, just specifically to make posts like these and have disdain for the products that bought them.

    I’m pretty sure Fb is like Don Draper in that one scene in Madmen where one of his writers says, “I feel sorry for you”

    And then Don says, “I don’t think about you at all”.

    Fb isn’t afraid of the fediverse. They don’t think of us as competition because it’s not

    Jdreben,
    @Jdreben@mastodon.world avatar

    The fediverse like the internet itself is open protocols. That will never be able to be commercialized in an exclusive way

    They have no reason to fear the fediverse. It’s existence is irrelevant to them

    Jdreben,
    @Jdreben@mastodon.world avatar

    Trying to get ahead of other private platforms in this clear future of federation? That is their goal. And they are winning.

    Smartest thing they’ll do since opening the product up to non college students, interoperating with ActivityPub, when/if they do.

    No other private platform is really doing that except maybe Flipboard and Medium.

    They’re entrenched enough, they think they are unbreakable but the truth is they are just the least breakable of a dying industry. It’ll probably take a long long time to die but centralized social media is on its way out and they know it and that’s why they’re doing this. It’s a self inflicted chink in the armor to expand their reach because they know all their competitors will suffer more for it

    App / mode idea: Darmok and Jalad on the ocean.

    Basically if you have seen the episode ( ) it would take whatever you write and convert it to story speak.

    If you haven’t seen the episode. In a nutshell, these aliens only speak by referencing stories. So to say “I made a big mistake” they’d say something like “January 6, when the White House walls fell”. This app/mode would use commonly known stories like the Bible or popular events to talk instead of explicitly saying words

    Forget “dying on a hill.” Most people these days, knowingly or unknowingly, “die on a dragon’s hoard.” Refusing or unable to abandon their chosen demon overlord and their products.

    What makes software political, or one thing, is that using software is a social “boost” of its creator(s).

    The closest thing we can get to apolitical software is MIT or Apache license imo. Copyleft (AGPL) begets forced social “boosting” of the authors if you fork the author’s software, much like closed source begets forced payment if you want to take over the author’s software.

    Is there a phrase copy-less? As opposed to copyleft

    Jdreben,
    @Jdreben@mastodon.world avatar

    Still super pro copyleft. Just saying, it attaches and tracks clout as much as protects against theft and absorption.

    Lemmy is as affected by this concept as Threads is. Just in a copy left rather than copy right way. Where’s the copy middle

    Jdreben,
    @Jdreben@mastodon.world avatar

    @lightweight Idk how but I would love a world where companies, idk had to disclose software used like ingredients in food

    If you are running your own server, perhaps as a trial, and you decide to kill it, can you do one quick tidy up command before you pull the plug?

    On the command line: tootctl self-destruct

    This will notify the that your server is on the way out. Otherwise, servers may try for days to communicate with you.

    Thanks

    https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/tootctl/#self-destruct

    Jdreben,
    @Jdreben@mastodon.world avatar

    @bumble Oof tootctl project should really consider renaming that to something less scary and more obvious so users understand and are not afraid of doing that Haha

    not that I know this is a reason anyone wouldn’t want to run that command in practice, but to me that sounds like a much more destructive command than what you’re describing it does!

    It could be announce-shutdown or self-cleanup or teardown rather then destruct
