FYI no streaming service pays more than US $0.01 per stream. And that’s at the very top end, with a premium paying customer in a premium market.

I found this article explaining how streams are calculated helpful:
https://soundcharts.com/blog/music-streaming-rates-payouts
Lots of variables like country, service tier, content pool & user engagement factor in, making the "average" per stream unpredictable.

Tidal & Qobuz pay more per stream b/c they have less streams overall--making every stream more valuable. 1/

The real takeaway as far as I'm concerned is that we shouldn't split hairs too much over which of the other streaming service pays the most per stream.

They are all (currently) better than Spotify for the following reasons:

  1. Spotify changed their payout system in April to only pay artists on their streams once they have a track streamed at least 1,000 times in a calendar year.

I’m enjoying everyone’s posts on the various entries. I wish I had the spoons to post about every entry, but maybe nobody wants my asshole opinions anyway. Especially since I have no skin in the game. I couldn’t even get it together in time to enter. :AAAAAA:

I’ve been clicking the provided links to people’s Fediverse profile. In some cases I’ve been pleasantly surprised that it was someone I already was already mutuals with. In other cases, I’ve been confounded.

Yeah that could be a factor if someone has a large and devoted fanbase on here that might vote for them regardless of how good the other entries were. Then it would just turn into a popularity contest.
I hope the lack of tangible prizes would deter that kind of behavior tho. With low to no stakes, it might not motivate such ppl to participate the same way it would if they thought their vote might help a friend win money or studio time or something.

Just started free* trials of Qobuz and Tidal. They both offer up to 24-bit, 192 kHz streaming. Even so, I think I prefer Qobuz's quality.

The drawback is that Qobuz does NOT HAVE LYRICS. This is a major drawback for me as a hearing impaired person and also a songwriter (I want to know for sure what the lyrics are)! Qobuz is slightly cheaper if you pay annually rather than monthly.

*free but you give them payment info and the subscription kicks in if you don't cancel

Re: which service pays the artists the most per stream

I looked through my streaming sales and from what I can tell the rate varies, probably based on what tier of subscription the listener has.

I only have a few streams from any Qobuz listener but the highest rate I saw was US $0.0105.

For Tidal, the highest rate was $0.011.

But again, it's hard to say if whoever was listening to my music was using the most premium subscription option.

FYI free streams usually don't pay the artist at all!

Spotify is finding new ways to weasel out of paying artists.

Now the MLC (Mechanical License Collective) is suing Spotify.

It’s Dootsday, YEEEAAAAAH!

Have you listened to the entries for the contest yet? There are 72 entries this year, lots of talented Fediverse musicians to discover and follow, and lots of new music to enjoy!

You have until next Sunday to listen and vote, and this year you get 3 votes!

Major pet peeve: Labyrinths ARE NOT mazes. They are different things. One has a non-branching path that leads to the center. The other does not.

Kills me that Discovery got this wrong in the otherwise amazing space library episode.

Really appreciate how evocative @bittersweetdb track, "In the Wind" is for . It's got a kind of ethereal Mad Max vibe, with the otherwordly womp-y droning bass drum and trance-like vocals. Well done!

Welp unfortunately I have to refine my criteria if I ever hope to narrow down my list of entries to vote for only 3.
First additional criteria will be the artist (composer/songwriter) needs to be actually present/active on the Fediverse. For me, one of the points is to strengthen community among

Fedivision is a song contest among musical artists here on the Fediverse, in the spirit of Eurovision, but the countries are made up and there are no prizes for the winner, just bragging rights.

The entries just became public yesterday, so you have a whole week to listen and vote! https://fedivision.party/

I didn’t enter, but I have been enjoying listening to all the tracks and am having a hard time deciding which to vote for. You get 3 votes this year!

I do not feel bad for these miscreants.

I’m listening through the entries, and I think I’ve encountered the first one I will probably give one of my three votes to. But I don’t think I’ve made it even 1/4 of the way through the entries at this point and I’m not listening in order, in case anyone was curious.

KydiaMusic,
@KydiaMusic@mastodon.social avatar

@mxtthxw

Lol. I haven’t listened through them all yet but based on my own criteria, I should have entered this year as we would both be in good company 😂

KydiaMusic,
@KydiaMusic@mastodon.social avatar

That being said, if your song has a sustained, ringing resonant frequency in it that MAKES MY BAHA FEED BACK, it will seriously count against you. Sorry, but you literally physically hurt me and I don’t appreciate that. 😭 😫 :AAAAAA:

(Two songs have done this so far.)

KydiaMusic,
@KydiaMusic@mastodon.social avatar

Also I’m referring to all the entries as “songs” but ofc I realize that technically speaking, a song is music & lyrics. Any track that does not have lyrics is classified as a composition.

Although I GREATLY enjoy singing & therefore songs, that will not bias me in my selections! If anything, anyone who submitted an entry with singing means they have more criteria by which they will be evaluated—the vocal performance (is it adequate?) & the lyrics (are they good?).

KydiaMusic,
@KydiaMusic@mastodon.social avatar

Aight, I've listened through all 72 entries, written down the 12 or so that caught my ear, and will listen through again tomorrow. I need to go follow some new (to me) fellow !
