I’m listening through the entries, and I think I’ve encountered the first one I will probably give one of my three votes to. But I don’t think I’ve made it even 1/4 of the way through the entries at this point and I’m not listening in order, in case anyone was curious.

Realizing the time constraints most musicians were under, my criteria are pretty simple. I ask myself these questions:

Is the song good?

And is the performance, production, mixing/mastering adequate so as to not be a hindrance?

Both of these are subject to my taste and standards of what I consider “good” and “adequate” of course, but I enjoy a wide variety of music and try hard to be unbiased.

That being said, if your song has a sustained, ringing resonant frequency in it that MAKES MY BAHA FEED BACK, it will seriously count against you. Sorry, but you literally physically hurt me and I don’t appreciate that. 😭 😫 :AAAAAA:

Also I’m referring to all the entries as “songs” but ofc I realize that technically speaking, a song is music & lyrics. Any track that does not have lyrics is classified as a composition.

Although I GREATLY enjoy singing & therefore songs, that will not bias me in my selections! If anything, anyone who submitted an entry with singing means they have more criteria by which they will be evaluated—the vocal performance (is it adequate?) & the lyrics (are they good?).

I have my music on Bandcamp and have never had an issue getting my money from sales. I make way more money from Bandcamp sales than I do from streaming—$0.73 for a Bandcamp sale vs. $0.003 per stream on Spotify.

The "spell" Hitler cast is what we often call a "reality distortion field"—an ability to bend perceptions, convincing followers to believe the impossible and disregard facts and reason.

We've glorified this trait, especially in charismatic business leaders.

I wish I knew how to break the spell over others. That power to manipulate others into a reality distortion field is the same power that charismatic cult leaders have. I’m not sure how many people have successfully been freed from these cults without first getting them away from the cult leader.

I feel like those using it as a tool are already skilled enough at music to know how to use it as a “tool that serves their own creative intentions,” whereas those who think they are creating music merely by inputting a prompt have no clue what all is involved in the actual creation & production of music.

Certainly the fact that they’re self-satisfied and enamored with the pablum the AI spits out based on their prompts reveals that they don’t have good or refined musical tastes.

I really do believe that EVERYONE should exercise their creativity and make art. Even if it’s not good. Even if your first attempts are clumsy, poorly executed, and amateurish (and oh yes they will be!). Because:

I think creativity is an innate part of being human.

It’s therapeutic

It works your brain in good ways—it’s a type of imaginative play

It makes you appreciate other’s creative efforts more, b/c you have first-hand experience in how challenging it can be

It’s extremely fulfilling!

The 2013 film "Her" was the saddest thing I've ever seen. It explores themes of depression and sadness. If this is what AI is going to do, then you can keep such sadness to yourself, Mr. Samantha err I mean Mr. Sam. Real relationships are far more important than any technology ever created. AI is no substitute for human connection. AI lack the depth, empathy, and authenticity of genuine human connection. Your AI only good to show "Java for loop" syntax and that is the end of it.

I was just reading this @pluralistic article on how copyright laws (current, or any new ones that might get enacted) are not likely to protect creators from LLMs and genAI, but that labor laws might.

However, I wonder if we could get better consumer laws in place, too—requiring that all AI-generated content must be disclosed prominently.

I’d like to see better consumer protection laws related to contents of products, sustainability, and country of origin, too.
